Why Eminem Keeps Rapping About Mariah
Pictures ran this week all over the place from the new music video being shot for Mariah Carey.

Brett Ratner, director of the "Rush Hour" movies, is collaborating with Carey on the first video from her new album. The song is called "Obsessed," and it's a witty comeback to Eminem's recent rap on her on his new album.

The Mariah-Eminem saga has turned into a pretty swell feud, with both sides getting in their cracks.

But now Mark Batson, the producer who shepherds Eminem's albums to completion, tells me it's not personal at all.

"He just used her name because it rhymed," Batson told me at the BET Awards last Sunday. "It doesn't mean a thing."

In fact, says Batson, "he" – meaning Eminem – "uses most names in songs because they rhyme."

Well, it's a theory, but I'm not sure I totally believe it. "Bagpipes from Baghdad," the "song" in question on Eminem's "Relapse," doesn't use the word "Mariah" to rhyme with anything, actually. But Eminem does call Mariah the "c word" in the song, and mocks her husband and a former boyfriend.

Now Carey gets him back in the "Obsessed" video. By the looks of it, the video is going to be hilarious. Carey is dressed in a hooded gray sweatshirt, Eminem's trademark costume. Can't wait to see the actual footage. Let Carey have the last laugh on this twisted piece of work.

New Precious Teaser Poster Debuts
Originally titled "Push: Based on a Novel by Sapphire," Lionsgate and the filmmakers smartly changed the title when the Sci-Fi "Push" came out earlier this year. Precious is the nickname the film's title character, a wonderful debut by newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, is given to by her abusive mother, a career altering performance by Mo 'Nique. The film follows 16-year-old Precious as she tries to break the chains that relationship and create a new life for herself. It's an inspiring film with stunning turns from the leads and a fine supporting cast including Mariah Carey, Paula Patton and Lenny Kravitz.

Many films get hyped beyond belief out of Sundance never to be heard of again. Lionsgate is making sure this won't happen with "Precious." First, they brought on board both Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey to "present" the film — guaranteeing it a stature the media can't ignore — and secondly, they are continuing to put their signature creative vision to the marketing materials. The studio has gained acclaim for posters from everything from their Perry films to the "Saw" franchise. Their latest accomplishment? This classy, artistic and inspiring teaser poster.

"Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire" opens on Nov. 6, but will be heard loudly throughout the 2009 awards season.

Note: Click on the above photo to view a high-resolution image of the poster. Thanks to Shoshannah from Lionsgate for sending us the file!

Nick Cannon: Mariah's Not Dissing Eminem In 'Obsessed'
Despite the fact that Mariah Carey, dressed in drag, sort of resembles Eminem in her new video for "Obsessed," husband Nick Cannon isn't sure why people would think that Carey is dissing Eminem in the track.

"I don't know. Honestly, I don't think so," Cannon told MTV News when asked if the song is about the rapper, who seemingly took a jab at Carey in his song, "Bagpipes From Baghdad."

"I don't think that she would take her time," Cannon said. "My wife doesn't beef. She's Mariah Carey. She's not beefin', she's a vegetarian."

Cannon said that the song – which will be included on Carey's album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, due this fall – was more inspired by a certain Lindsay Lohan flick than by a need to retaliate against Em.

"People keep saying ['Obsessed'] was directed at certain people," Cannon said. "To be completely honest, she did the record 'cause she's a huge fan of this movie 'Mean Girls,' and there's a line in the movie where one of the girls is like, 'Why are you so obsessed with me?' She says that at the beginning of the song, and that's where the concept came from. But you know, art imitates life."

Cannon has his own theory about just who he'd like the song to be about, and it's not Eminem.

"I always say I thought the record was about me, 'cause I'm obsessed with my wife," he said. "But if somebody's out there and you feel like you might have been obsessed, then the record's about you."

Press Reactions to "Manly" Mariah Photos
When pictures of Mariah from the set of the video shoot for "Obsessed" have emerged, they made quite a buzz; and the online news/blogging community was quick to react and give their comments. Mariah Carey" is on the main page of today's Yahoo! and is listed as the #1 most searched term on "Top Searches."

Entertainment Weekly: She's a man, baby! We knew Mariah had a killer hair and makeup crew — when does she not look flawless? — but extra accolades for turning the curvilicious diva into her nemesis, Eminem, for her upcoming "Obsessed" video. I like Mariah with a sense of humor, and I love the idea of her turning the tables on the king of celebrity-mocking videos. Here's to hoping Bruno shows up...

New York Daily News: This is not your everyday poseur Eminem wannabe – it's Mariah Carey, who dressed as the controversial rapper while filming her new video "Obsessed" in New York... It's great that Mariah seems to be having fun with this whole "Mininem" thing, but we're afraid of the conflict going any further, because no one wants to see the next step: Eminem in drag.

New York Post: It's Mariah Carey! The human butterfly embraced her macho side while filming the music video for "Obsessed," lead single off "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," her new CD. I'm guessing the video involves Mariah's butch bellhop becoming a little infatuated with the singer, or something. Basically it's another way to give her double the screentime -- much like that Mariah-on-Mariah fight in "Heartbreaker!

People Magazine: Looks like Mariah Carey is having the last laugh in her ongoing feud with Eminem. While filming her latest music video for the song "Obsessed" in New York on Monday, Carey was snapped sporting an oversized sweatshirt, fitted baseball cap and baggy sweatpants, an outfit noticeably similar to Eminem's performance wardrobe. The pop diva may finally be responding to lyrics from Eminem's recent album Relapse, on which the controversial rapper namedrops Carey in the track "Bagpipes From Baghdad."

MTV News: The three-way tussle pitting Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon against Eminem took another turn on Monday when Carey shot a video for her new single "Obsessed" — and dressed up like Em. Carey filmed scenes for the clip at the Plaza Hotel in New York, where she plays a man in two different costumes: One finds her in a bellhop uniform, while the other has her in a giant gray hoodie, a doo-rag and a thick goatee — apart from the beard, she's dressed exactly like Eminem (and looks very bizarre).

Los Angeles Times: Shades of Chaz Bono! But fear not. Mariah Carey is not giving up the gown. Our bodacious babe is definitely not having a sex change. That would totally bum out Nick Cannon. She's just spoofing rapper Eminem for her new video, "Obsessed," shooting on Monday in NYC. How's it feel, Em? How do you think Mariah looks better, as a dude or a dame? And how about them busy Susan Boyle eyebrows?

Access Hollywood: The celebrity feud between Mariah Carey and Eminem continued on Monday, when the singer sported a look very similar to the rapper’s while filming the video for her song, “Obsessed.” Is Mimi about to respond to the rapper’s song, “Bagpipes From Baghdad”? We’re giving round two of this celebrity feud to Mimi for her spot on impersonation of the rapper… Em, do you have a comeback?

This is London: Somebody ought to tell the usually image-conscious Mariah Carey that she needs to wax her moustache... and perhaps her goatee as well.

MTV UK: Mariah Carey seems intent on hitting back at Eminem with her new single Obsessed. In photos taken on the set of the video yesterday the singer is shown made up looking very much like the rapper. MC is shown as a white rapper in a grey hooded tracksuit. And while the goatee she sports reminds MTV of Vanilla Ice or Fred Durst it seems more likely she's having a dig at Eminem.

Rolling Stone Reviews "Obsessed"
Mariah Carey
"Obsessed"

By Nicole Frehsee, Rolling Stone

On the first single from her forthcoming album, Mimi dogs a dude (Eminem?) who's "lying that [he's] sexing [her]," unleashing zingers like "I can see right through you, like you're bathing in Windex" over dark and creeping synths. (She also attacks his bank account: "You're a mom-and-pop; I'm a corporation." Ouch!) Produced by The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, the cut doesn't show off Mariah's fab pipes – Auto-Tuned coos are subdued in for those high C's – but it's the catchiest anti-stalking anthem of the summer.

Carey On
A song that could become Mariah Carey's likewise 19th Hot 100 No. 1, bringing her within one of tying the Beatles' all-time mark, makes its first appearance on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.

"Obsessed," Carey's Eminem-skewering lead single from "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," due Aug. 25, debuts at No. 52, garnering an audience of 4.3 million among 62 of the chart's 145 reporting stations. The track, co-written and produced by Carey with Tricky Stewart and The-Dream, also played to an audience of 5.6 million at mainstream top 40 and rhythmic radio combined (102 stations) in the charts' tracking week.

MDJ Special: Goodbye Michael Jackson
Like the rest of the world, we here at MariahDaily.com are shocked and saddened by the untimely passing of Michael Jackson. As a last farewell, we wanted to share some of Mariah's work that was directly or indirectly related to Michael Jackson - from her memorable #1 cover of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There" at her 1992 MTV Unplugged concert to her appearance in Michael's fundraising concert in Korea in 1999 and her participation in "What More Can I Give?" the 2001 charity single written and produced by Michael. "I'm That Chick," one of the songs from Mariah's last album, E=MC² samples from Michael's 1980 single "Off The Wall" and even directly uses some of the lyrics from the bridge: "There ain't no rules, it's up to you!"

Rest in peace Michael, you'll be missed.

News Tidbits
• Mariah has donated her denim jacket to Hard Rock's world famous memorabilia collection and the jacket is now prominently displayed in Hard Rock Hotel in Macau, China. Below are pictures from the Chinese magazine The Bund (June 11th issue):

• Mariah's in-ear-monitors that she wears during a performance were customly made for her by Ultimate Ears. Below are photos.

• From Billboard's Chart Beat: NO. 1 FROM THE START: Michael Jackson was on his way to chart royalty beginning with the debut of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" on the Billboard Hot 100 dated Nov. 15, 1969, when Jackson was 11 years old. The act would become the first to send its first four entries to the Hot 100's summit. The Jackson 5 remains the only group to start so strongly. Since, only Mariah Carey, who in 1992 reigned with her cover of "I'll Be There," matched (and bested) the feat, when her first five singles topped the Hot 100 in 1990-91.

• Nick Cannon recently posed for the cover of GIANT Magazine. In a behind-the-scenes interview during the cover shoot, he talks about power, Barack Obama and how his love for Mariah is getting stronger by the day.

Download: Nick Behind-The-Scenes at GIANT Photo Shoot

Nick Cannon: "Being married to my wife; and I love the fact that we are the unorthodox couple to a lot of people. I love being the underdog - 'never see you coming' - that's the secret of success to where people are like, 'Ah, that's fake, that's a publicity stunt, that's not gonna work, how crazy is that?' We're probably more in love today than we've ever been and it continues to grow so it's unexplainable. Really I can't explain it and I always give all the glory to God when it comes to that because to me that's what success is really about - where you can establish a family in a way that it's truly is something that is God-given and if God doesn't have his hand on a union like that, we've all seen... marriage right now isn't going strong in our community so we're just trying to be an example and continue to lead in that direction. It says a lot about a man who can have a powerful woman in his life and still stand tall and still hold his own."

• The songwriting/production team of Christopher "Tricky" Stewart & The-Dream tied for Songwriter of the Year honors with Stargate (Tor Hermansen & Mikkel Eriksen) at the 22nd annual ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards. The pair was honored for The-Dream's "Falsetto" and "I Luv Your Girl," Mary J. Blige's "Just Fine," J. Holiday's "Suffocate," and Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body."

• A slip-cased digipak set containing #1's and Around The World DVDs has just been released in Australia & New Zealand. The special set can be purchased online at Big W (AU) and Marbecks (NZ).

• Talking about his forthcoming autobiography Guilty By Association in an exclusive interview with ChronicVacation, Damizza clears the air on Mariah's cease & desist. He says, "when it comes to Mariah, I don't have anything bad to say about her. I don't say anything about her personal business, the Glitter album, her health, or anything like that. In the book, I'm telling stories about our trip to the Super Bowl when we met Al Gore, or when we recorded 'Crybaby.'" You can read the full interview here. The book will be in stores Sept. 11, 2009.

This summery midtempo bouncer from Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, due Aug. 25, finds MC getting a bit devilish with what sounds like a response to Eminem's "Bagpipes from Baghdad."

Billboard Reviews "Obsessed"
Mariah Carey
"Obsessed" (Island Def Jam)

Review by: Monica Herrera, Associate Editor - Billboard

Jay-Z may have declared AutoTune dead, but Mariah Carey just revived it. On the debut single from her 12th studio album ("Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," due Aug. 25 on Island Def Jam), the singer who needs no vocal manipulation uses the effect with startling success. The key is making it look easy. Along with the-Dream and C. "Tricky" Stewart, Carey has crafted a gem of a diss record that coasts, even over its sputtering moans and synth jabs. One questionable Windex analogy aside, her lyrical boasts are biting and funny, and the syrupy lightness of her vocals is tailor-made for the ribbing she gives her mystery pursuant (reportedly Eminem). Though some lament Carey trading in her sky-high notes and ballads for a more constrained, R&B-friendly range, the singer has clearly found a new comfort zone that could very well produce her 19th No. 1 hit.
