Nick Cannon: "Being married to my wife; and I love the fact that we are the unorthodox couple to a lot of people. I love being the underdog - 'never see you coming' - that's the secret of success to where people are like, 'Ah, that's fake, that's a publicity stunt, that's not gonna work, how crazy is that?' We're probably more in love today than we've ever been and it continues to grow so it's unexplainable. Really I can't explain it and I always give all the glory to God when it comes to that because to me that's what success is really about - where you can establish a family in a way that it's truly is something that is God-given and if God doesn't have his hand on a union like that, we've all seen... marriage right now isn't going strong in our community so we're just trying to be an example and continue to lead in that direction. It says a lot about a man who can have a powerful woman in his life and still stand tall and still hold his own."

I am heartbroken. My prayers go out to the Jackson family, and my heart goes out to his children. Let us remember him for his unparalleled contribution to the world of music, his generosity of spirit in his quest to heal the world & the joy he brought to his millions of devoted fans throughout the world. I feel blessed to have performed with him several times & to call him my friend. No artist will ever take his place. His star will shine forever. - Mariah

Mariah's Introduction of Inductee Patti LaBelle "I stand here on the Apollo stage, a stage where through the years you have given stellar performance after stellar performance in a way that is uniquely you. You have become the benchmark by which singing is judged. You are a headliner's headliner, after all who would be crazy enough to follow you. We thank you for sharing your gift with us and I am personally so honored to know you. I thank you for always, always sharing your gift of love and friendship with me. Ladies and gentlemen, the incomparable... please give a warm welcome to the newest member of the legends of the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame... Patti LaBelle!"

"I'm using this week's subject to show off the latest job I did for "Legendary" singer Mariah Carey. This was my third job for Mimi and it was very exciting for me to work with her because I actually am a huge fan. She's a lot of fun and I listen to her music a lot. She's an undeniable talent with a great set of stems! Anyway here she is!" |

On Whitney's Return: "Honestly, I haven't had any, I haven't spoken to her in a long time. I'm sure whatever she does is gonna be brilliant." On Lee Daniels/Tennessee: Mariah: "I learned how to deal with him cracking the whip." Lee: "And I learned how to deal with her slinging her hair." Mariah: "No, I didn't sling my hair!" Lee: "Because she didn't sling her hair. Exactly." Mariah: "We've been in this whole world when we just got back from Cannes for another film that we did together after 'Tennessee' called 'Precious' and we're just like in a frenzy of that so it feels like 'Tennessee' was so long ago." Lee: "I told her, I said that 'People are just thinking that you're really, really incredible in this character' and she goes [makes faces]." Mariah: "No, it does feel great to see some of the great reviews that I've been reading and..." Lee: "You deserve them, honey." Mariah: "Thank you, darling. See that's my biggest review here because he is tough but he is tough because he wants the work to be great. And the thing is, we have a very strong connection so when we work together, even when as a producer or director, we connect and I just can't help but ask him, 'what do you think?' no matter what's going on with the situation."

On Possibility of another Whitney Duet: "I would love to. I don't know where she's at with her album. I know I got to finish mine in like a week."

What was it like working opposite Mariah Carey? "Mariah is great. One of the things I realized is that I walked into the situation with certain expectations given she's really a living icon, and all my expectations were blown. She was really sweet, really open, just really ready to do the work. And I think her performance was wonderful." "I play her abusive husband. I did get to throw her up against the wall. I was actually intimidated because it was the first thing that I shot with her so basically I met Mariah Carey for the first time and then we were rehearsing this scene."

Pair of Brothers in a Grand Ole Soap Opry There are signs that Aaron Woodley, the director of "Tennessee," an earnest, increasingly preposterous road movie about unhealed family wounds and fraternal bonds, wanted to make a Terrence Malick film. In the early scenes of the movie, whose setting shifts from the desert outskirts of Albuquerque to Texas, Oklahoma and finally Tennessee, the camera studies the glowing Western sky at twilight as though determined to find a visionary beauty in desolate wasteland. It is outside Albuquerque that Carter Armstrong (Adam Rothenberg), a cabdriver in his early 30s, lives a marginal existence in a trailer with his younger brother, Ellis (Ethan Peck, grandson of Gregory). Awkward flashbacks reveal that 15 years earlier the young Carter (Ryan Lynn), a high school football star, fled his childhood home in Knoxville, Tenn., dragging Ellis with him, after being terrorized by his drunken, abusive father, Roy (Bill Sage). Like his dad Carter is now a bitter alcoholic hothead itching for excuses to lash out at the world. But he is also fiercely protective of Ellis, who, as depicted in Russell Schaumburg's lumpy screenplay, is too angelic to be true. The brothers' lives are uprooted when Ellis is found to have leukemia. After Carter proves incompatible as a bone marrow donor, he decides they must return to Knoxville to determine if their father would be a suitable candidate. At a Texas diner Ellis befriends Krystal Evans (Mariah Carey), a waitress and aspiring country singer-songwriter. When she offers to put them up for the night, they encounter her monstrous husband, Frank (Lance Reddick), a state trooper who loathes the brothers on sight and threatens Krystal's life if she touches one of them. Seizing her opportunity to escape, she flees with them before dawn. On discovering her disappearance, Frank, convinced she has been kidnapped, gives chase. Although the setup has its gripping moments, "Tennessee" collapses once the three stop in Nashville with Frank breathing down their necks. Although Ms. Carey makes a brave effort to put on a Texan accent, later in the movie she seems to have forgotten it, and there is nothing countrylike about her singing or the song with which she wows the audience in a Nashville talent competition. It isn't saying much, but at least her work here is more substantial than in the catastrophic "Glitter." By this time Krystal has metamorphosed from goodhearted to gooey sweet. The story cedes its final shreds of credibility in a contrived scene where Frank, observing someone else's abused wife, miraculously sees the light and softens. From here on "Tennessee" wades hip-deep in mush.
Hollywood.com Says It may be small in scale, but 'Tennessee' is a rewarding and moving drama with exceptionally fine performances all around. What's Good? Director Aaron Woodley is not afraid to let the budding relationship between these three travelers play out in real time. The film is slow-paced, but there is an ultimate payoff, and it's a rewarding one. Tennessee has the distinct feel of America's back roads and never feels false or contrived, a neat trick since the story is ripe for sentimental twists the filmmaker thankfully avoids like the plague. What's Bad? It takes a while to get into the rhythms of these two very damaged brothers, but give Tennessee a chance, and it all kicks in, especially with the welcome introduction of Carey's character. The actors bring it home. Only Lance Reddick as Frank, her crummy hubby, comes off as one-dimensional. Favorite Scene? Carey does a splendid job on an original song, "Right to Dream," in the small Nashville club where she gets a chance to sing. Key to the scene's believability is that we see her as Krystal, a small-town aspiring performer, and not superstar Mariah Carey when she's up there on stage. Netflix or Multiplex? Like many independently-made dramas, this one will struggle to stay afloat in theaters. Hopefully, it will have a strong afterlife on DVD, where many more people will happily discover that Mariah can actually act!
Mariah has come a long way since 'Glitter' The little indie "Tennessee" squeezes super-celeb diva Mariah Carey into the humble role of Texas truck stop waitress. It's a fairly meaty role (pardon the pun - she added weight for the part) and Carey does some surprisingly subtle work. She doesn't pick up a guitar and croon until the end of the movie, and even then, it's not the same gal you saw in "Glitter." Carey plays Krystal, stuck in a dead-end job and oppressive marriage, who decides to skip town with a couple of brothers on their way to Nashville, where she'd like to start over as a singer. The trio is pursued by Krystal's abusive husband (Lance Reddick), a down-tempo chase drama that's woven with the story of the brothers' own desperate pilgrimage. Carter (Adam Rothenberg) is ferrying his desperately ill sibling (Ethan Peck) to Tennessee, hoping to find their estranged father, who may be able to provide life-saving bone marrow. Road movies are known for their strange bedfellows, but there's something irreconcilable about Krystal's Nashville dream and the brothers' desperate medical situation (the scenario didn't work any better in "Boys on the Side.") Sometimes, each actor appears to be in his/her own movie, especially Rothenberg, whose Carter is a lumpen, inexpressive brooder. "Tennessee" is occasionally a chore to sit through, but it does yield some third-act rewards for patient viewers, as the characters' willingness to sacrifice for the other is suddenly brought into sharp focus. As for Carey's inevitable journey to the microphone, well, I'll admit that I'm not a fan, but her song "I've Got a Right to Dream" which she co-wrote with Willie Nelson, ain't half bad. Neither's the movie, if you can make it all the way to Tennessee.
Three outcasts hit the road. At the Sunshine (1:39). R: violence, language. Who's the luckiest man in Mariah Carey's life right now? Nope, not Nick Cannon. It's Aaron Woodley, who somehow snagged the songbird for his downbeat drama. Granted, Carey probably came cheap, given her failure in films like "Glitter." But she's actually the best thing about this formulaic indie, in which two brothers (Adam Rothenberg, Ethan Peck) help her sad-eyed waitress escape a violent husband (Lance Reddick). The good news for Carey is that she gets to prove she's a pretty decent actress after all. The bad news, of course, is that she's done it in a movie no one has any other reason to see.
Mariah Carey isn't the star of Aaron Woodley's film. In fact, she's only on screen for maybe a third of its running time, and a few minutes of that is spent singing, a sentimental number that rather reductively defines her character, Krystal, a diner waitress and aspiring artist seeking escape from her abusive state trooper husband (Lance Reddick). Even up against such odds, Carey remains the movie's most compelling figure, her performance nuanced and generous. The ostensible focus is the story of two brothers, Carter (Adam Rothenberg) and Ellis (Ethan Peck), coming to terms with the legacy of their own abusive father (Bill Sage), as well as their own resentments and losses. Impelled by a medical emergency (Ellis has cancer and they hope dad will be a bone marrow match), the boys are headed back to Tennessee after many years away when they meet Krystal; the ensuing road trip features predictable confrontations, flashbacks and revelations, as the brothers bicker and bond, finding themselves as they sift through pieces of their past. The light is perpetually filtered, the tones golden, and even the most run-down settings are also, somehow, gorgeous. Amid the banality, however heartfelt, Carey is a welcome surprise.

"I had to kind of completely lose everything that is me - the celebrity or the singer or however you want to describe me. That was number one like that had to go out the window immediately and that wasn't an issue really. Aside from that, it was like shedding layers of a mask or just skin, just really like becoming somebody completely new. Even more than just like, 'Okay, there's no make-up in this, we're gonna do a prosthetic nose.' They tried to do prosthetic nose. My face broke out from that. We had to take it off but it still... then it just enlarged my nose. It was like everything that could go wrong, you know, Lee wanted me to look as unglamorous as I could because you really didn't want people to be taken out of the film but he believed that I could do this role of the social worker." "I guess people have this like confused version of who they think I am like I'm this like princess that fell down from you know, never-neverland like grew up exfoliating my skin with diamonds. No. That's not who I am. I really kind of had a lot of intense things happen to me as a child and growing up and stuff like that so I think we, all of us in this film, understand what it's like to be a little bit, a slice of what Precious' life is. I don't think anything could compare to how intense it is but I think we all feel for her and empathize."
"I, myself had been through things that I could draw on in terms of being able to sympathize and empathize with her character. And so I think all of us that were in the movie have been through some sort of like either feeling like an outcast or feeling ignored as Gabby described her sometimes. Precious has been ignored, you know, her whole life, the abuse she went through. All of us have had a little bit of a slice of what that tastes like. Most people think when I was born it was like, 'Wow, magical bubble.' And here I am singing high notes. It's worse than that. So I do know people who have been through some deep sh*t. Pardon my French. [laughs] Merde."

What's on your iPod? Mainly classic stuff: Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Carly Simon. Bobby Darin, Nat King Cole. I love the old Mariah and Whitney stuff as well.
"My friend Gary and I showed up at Moon around 11:30, once we entered the club we saw all the decked-out festiveness everywhere. Nice balloons, and tons of people dancing it up. After making a round at the club to see which of our friends were there, we noticed the entire north VIP booths on the south side of the building were being blocked by security. And that's when we saw the 6-foot tall cake, gorgeous, white frosting with pink bows - very Mimi. After staking out a good location and waiting for about an hour, we noticed Mariah was actually up in the VIP balcony of the club with Nick and a few of their invited guests. Once we saw Moon staff milling about the VIP booth with the cake, setting it up with napkins and champagne glasses, we knew the guests of honor would be down soon. I saw a few familiar faces; Jasmine D., Rachel, Michael Richardson, Tyrese, Floyd Mayweather were all in the 'invited guests' section of the room. Nick came down first, but once Mariah came through, that's when we all got excited! The music was turned off and Nick said a few lovely words about his wife. Mariah looked very touched. Then Nick turned to her and said, 'We've been giving each other presents all day but there's one more that you don't know about. We started this project a few months ago and I wanted to have it finished for tonight...' Mariah seemed to know what he was talking about and held her hands up to her face as if ready to cry. Then Nick asked us all to turn our attention to the screens near the ceiling of the club and check out what he was talking about. It was a video to 'Love Story,' containing clips of the couple in various locations - some clips were from the 'Bye Bye' video. After the video, a cavalcade of balloons were released into the sky through Moon's awesome retractable roof - Nick mentioned that the Palms had arranged for no air traffic in the area just for the occasion. Mariah kept asking over the P.A. system for some festive music to be played while the balloons were released, but the D.J. was taking his time which led Mariah to ask, 'Hello?! I need some festive music after that video made me cry!' Our girl looked radiant (as always), wearing a beautiful beaded gown - I wish I could describe it better for you, but the people who'd rented out the booths near where we were standing had decided to stand up on their chairs and block our view. Nick got the crowd moving with an energetic D.J. set, playing lots of old-school R&B, and at one point the B-52s... then Mariah got on the mic and sang to somebody named either 'Rasheem' or 'Rajeem' who presumably was still up in the VIP balcony: 'Rajeem, get your ass down here!' A cute moment. Then Nick told everybody to jump up and down and live it up on the dance floor as if they were in St. Tropez and the place blew up! They started shooting soap suds onto the dance floor and the crowd was hot! All in all, being a mere 10-15 feet away from the lovely couple (who seemed very much in love) was all we needed. Lots o' Lambs were in the building - which was very evident since many people stopped dancing once she walked in the room and just stood there taking pictures. Nick asked if our arms were getting tired since he knew some of the footage would 'end up on YouTube' then Mariah grabbed the mic and sang 'YouTube' from 'Touch My Body' and the crowd ate it up! Nick thanked all the fans and called us 'our extended family' and kept spinning his amazing set."

Getting ready for festive moments! Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday. Lots of love! When I was 4, I went on an Easter egg hunt and I actually stumbled upon "THE BONUS EGG" aka I WON!!! But... Then... This 12yr old girl stole the BONUS EGG right out of my hand and and ran around saying.."I got the BONUS EGG!!!" Anyway, she won a HUGE Easter basket w/stuffed animals and candy and she didn't even find the frikin egg!!! Of course nooobody believed ME when I said I'd found the bonus egg before that mean little girl..but whatever because... As I was writing this Easter Saga for u, my husband handed me a HUGE pink Easter basket filled w/stuffed animals, balloons, candy and cards : ) So the moral of the story is: It's never too late to get your goodies! Happy Easter! |

"We'd heard Mariah was due to attend a Fashion Show at the hotel at 3pm, and had gotten ourselves onto the guest list for the show, but when we saw Mariah's tweet at 2:30pm that she was packing to leave South Africa, we decided to wait in the lobby, and ditched the fashion show. Our perseverance paid off! At around 3:30pm, a few bodyguards and hotel staff lined up at the door to protect/say goodbye to her, and suddenly she was there! Clayton and I walked up to her and said, 'Mariah, a picture please! For the nostalgia!' and she laughed as her bodyguards tried to push us back. She said, 'It's OK, let them through. I know these guys are real fans. Come on guys - for the nostalgia!' Nick Cannon took Clayton's camera and snapped the picture of the three of us. The two of Sieraaj and Mariah that are slightly off-focus were taken by my boyfriend - forgive him, he was trying his best with all the bodyguards trying to push him away! I stood (beaming!) next to her, and then said to her, 'I've been a fan since the beginning - August 1990 - and I just want to say thank you so much for 19 years of music.' She said, 'Aaaw, Thank you!' Then she got in the car and waved. Ten minutes later she posted on Twitter: On our way to the airport(lil late as usual..oops) Just met some nice fans from S.A. We took a picture.."For the nostalgia":) inside joke She is FABULOUS! Clayton and I can't stop smiling. It's been a 19-year wait for her to come to Cape Town, and I'm so happy I got to thank her for 19 years of magic!"

I walked alongside her and said, 'I'm glad you didn't cut your hair short!' (ref: her April Fools' Day joke on Twitter), and she said, 'That was a joke!' and smiled at me. Then she got in her car and was whisked away." |
"I went onto Mariah Daily Journal as I do every afternoon after college. This time it was different. As I browsed through the site I noticed something that immediately caught my eye 'connecting flight to Cape Town.' I had to read it over and over to make sure that I had read the right words. At that point shock and excitement kicked in. I knew this was an oppurtunity I couldn't miss as Mariah is my idol and role model. I went onto her twitter and saw 'on my way to Africa' I just knew I had to make an effort to see her. I went onto Cape Town Airport's website to look at flights that would land in Cape Town from London on Thursday, 2 April 2009. There were only three flights and the first one landed at 07:10. That night I went to bed over excited. I got up on Thursday at 05:50. I went to fetch a friend and was at the airport at 07:00. When I went through the International Arrivals door I went to the notice board and saw that the first flight was delayed and would only arrive at 08:10. The one after that would land at 08:30. I just had a feeling she would be on one of those two flights. I waited on the airport, people coming and going, and still no sign of Mariah. That is when I started thinking she might have gone through a special exit to the car, since she is one of the biggest celebrities to ever visit Cape Town. Just as I was losing hope, I just saw flashing lights everywhere and there she was, walking through the terminal door. I stood frozen for a second, and then reality kicked in and I knew I had to get a picture. All of a sudden there were about 100 people, as if they appeared from nowhere. I struggled to take photos but eventually I got two really good photos of her. All I could say was, 'Mariah would you please sign this?' holding my Elle Magazine. Her bodyguard said no and shoved me a bit, and to my surprise she said 'No, let me sign for him.' She signed my magazine and her bodyguard shoved me out of the way and took her to the black Mercedez waiting for her outside. It was definitely worth waiting 2 hours in the airport for her. It was undoubtedly the best day of my life!"
