Mariah Carey at Disneyland Paris

Mariah & Rashmi
"Although I'm not going to introduce Mariah Carey with any facts and figures because it's not necessary, I am going to introduce the One Mighty Party. It is the biggest gay and lesbian celebration in the US and on June 29th 2007 and made its debut in Europe at the Disneyland resort in Paris. The annual event was started 14 years ago by promoter Johnny Chisholm.

Mariah stayed at the luxurious Hotel de Crillon on the Place de la Concorde in the heart of Paris. There were fans waiting outside the hotel from 7pm onwards even though she didn't leave for the show until around 11.30pm. The fans were glad to catch a glimpse of their adorable Mariah, and so were the ever charming paparazzi. She hopped in her black Mercedes with her manager and friend to reach Disneyland in time for her set where she performed six remixes of her biggest hits whilst adlibbing live. The set at Disneyland, based around Sleeping Beauty's castle, was an amazing sight with many illuminations and a huge 'MC' spotlight and thousands of silver cellophane butterflies fluttering through the sky during her set. Although the rain began to pour it did not stop Mimi from performing her best albeit getting a bit soaked at the same time. She is a woman that firmly believes 'the show must go on' and we love her for it.

After the show I was lucky enough to go backstage and meet with Mariah and some of her peeps. MC looked great as always and we had a nice conversation. Contrary to totally disproportionate rumours, as I say time and time again, she was a lovely woman with a great sense of humour. 'Diva' is a word that can be interpreted in many different ways. To me, Mariah Carey is a diva, but not in the way that is described so often. My definition of a diva: Someone in control of her life and career, that takes care of herself and appearance, and lives life to the max. Every woman is a diva, dahhhling!"

Never Let Up
Mariah Carey is known for glamming it up, but the songbird even goes all out when she's in the recording studio. Spies told The Post's Melissa Jane Kronfeld that Carey entered Baseline Studio in Chelsea to record her next album at midnight the other day "dressed to the nines." She even stopped before entering to powder her nose and apply lip gloss "from a glowing tube." Carey was spotted getting into her black Bentley several hours later "with her driver and security guard."

Mariah Lightens Up Disneyland For The First French Mighty Party
(Yahoo! News France)

With a microphone in one hand and an umbrella in the other, Mariah warmed up 5,000 fans at the first French Mighty Party, an exceptional concert given at Disneyland to help the Elton John Foundation's fight against AIDS.

Joking about the unfavorable weather, the singer said some witty remarks, and cheered on by the audience, most of whom participated in the "Pride Walk" that was scheduled earlier in the capital.

"Okay, it rains, but it's okay, I'm dropping the umbrella and what a pity for my hair," said Mariah, in a hooded mini-cardigan dress, before hitting the notes in "Heartbreaker."

"Wow, I have to warm things up!" she said, putting her breasts back to their place, they were obviously too tight in the outfit. "Because I'm a diva, I gotta check what's going wrong," she joked again, watching herself in a diamond mirror a dancer gave her. "Well, it is a total and complete mess," she added. "Next time I'm gonna do 'Singing In The Rain' instead."

The diva also took her diamond necklace off, and her other jewelries thrown into the audience while singing the remixes to "Dreamlover" and "We Belong Together." But she took the time to change her outfit between each song. "I'm a Mickey girl!" she concluded, all wet, saying goodbye to the audience. Meanwhile, fireworks lightened up the sky above the castle of The Sleeping Beauty.

Jermaine Dupri: "I can't tell you nothing really, I don't know, I've been in the studio with Usher and Mariah right now. She's [Janet] in the studio though."

RU: "What about Mariah, how many tracks have you done with her?"
JD: "Five."

RU: "When's the album coming out?"
JD: "Thanksgiving."

RU: "I know now you're in Island Def Jam. What's that like?"

"The sultry superstar singer exited the Hotel de Crillon in the City of Lights to greet a monstrous swarm of ecstatic fans. Guess Mariah still knows how to work it! (And people seem to have forgotten Glitter.) Rockin' a shapely white dress, Ms. Carey did a few poses for photogs and signed a couple autographs before hopping into her car and driving away. • From the Associated Press: Pop divas think alike. The Barbados-born Rihanna, who has a No. 1 smash with rock-tinged jam "Umbrella," said songs that hit big during the season can be on the slower side yet remain upbeat. Her example: Mariah Carey's 2005 comeback single "We Belong Together," a bittersweet and bouncy ballad about a woman pining for an ex-boyfriend. "It has to be very melodic and catchy," Rihanna told the AP. "You know, songs that people want to sing along too while they're driving in the car. They just wanna turn it up, they just wanna hear it in the club, they just want to party to it all summer long."

• From Top40-Charts: Akon's smash hits from Konvicted, such as "Smack That," featuring Eminem, and "I Wanna Love You," featuring Snoop Dogg, held the No 1 and No 2 spots simultaneously, a feat achieved in modern chart history by only two other artists: Usher and Mariah Carey.

• From New Jersey: Hit machines: Derek Jeter dated pop singer Mariah Carey early in 1998. Since then, she has had 13 hits and he has had 1865.

On The Cover: Night & Day - July 1999
LEARNING TO CALL THE TUNE HERSELF
Night & Day (The Mail on Sunday, UK) - July 4, 1999

For years, Mariah Carey's career was in the hands of the record boss she married. Now, following her divorce last year, she's in charge

Mariah Carey is dead. She collapsed, aged 29, suddenly, right in front of me - her eyelids fluttered, a gasp escaped her lips, her knees buckled, and wham, down she went. Even posthumously, she remains drop-dead gorgeous. Her motionless body, clothed (just barely) in a midnight-blue silk robe, is sprawled across a shaggy white carpet that appears to have been made from a sheepdog. Her renowned hair fans out and delicately frames her face. I rise to my feet and applaud.

Okay, so Mariah was only playing dead, but it was a convincing impromptu performance. Although considering it's nearly 1am in Marrakech, and that Carey awoke this morning at eight for a photo shoot that lasted seven hours and still hasnn't eaten dinner, it's surprising that the cause of her collapse isn't sheer exhaustion. But, in fact, Mariah was re-enacting a scene from her movie debut in The Bachelor, released in America this autumn, in which she plays a temperamental opera singer who is unsuccessfully courted by Chris O'Donnell.

On the surface, this career move might seem as inspired as Whitney Houston's first acting endeavour, The Bodyguard, in which she played, basically, herself. Mariah, who in person, and even on very little sleep, comes across as far more intelligent, articulate and funny than her reputation leads one to believe, saw in this role an opportunity not only to parody her uberdiva image, but also attain some on-set experience before she begins production this summer on All That Glitters, her star vehicle about a struggling singer in early Eighties New York City.

"It's over the top," Mariah says of the sassy soprano role she portrays in The Bachelor. "I'm singing La Traviata, which is highly dramatic, and my character dies at the end of the scene. The director said: 'Okay, you need a stunt double for that fall, right"' And I said, 'Nah, I can do that,' not realizing that I was going to have to do 30 more takes. My hips and knees wee killing me. A medic had to bring me ice, and I was like: 'Never again.'" READ MORE »

Jasmine's Juice On Mariah's New Album & Summer Plans
Speaking of superstar celebs, this week I was lucky enough to listen to some of Mariah's new joints for her next album and all I can say is if you thought her last album was the second coming, well, you ain't seen nuthin' yet! MC filled me in on all the fun she's been having in the Islands working on her new tracks with her mate Da Brat. Now she's in Europe all week starting off at Paris' Disneyland for a huge function, then it's to our favourite spot Capri to swim in the blue lagoon before finishing up in Rome. So I must run and pack a case or two to join her but I can't say where 'cos you know those paps! Like Tupac- they get around!

DIVA PITCH
Telegraph Magazine (UK) - April 2, 2005 Issue

Mariah Carey's life, like one of her multi-octave vocals, has been a journey of extreme highs and lows - from taunted child to pop prima donna to fallen star. Now she's mounting a spirited fightback from her humbling public breakdown - and she's just as demanding as ever.

She sits bolt upright in the corner of a large hotel room that is lit, on her orders, by dozens of candles arranged around her and the interviewer's chair. When she stands up to say hi - she does not offer to shake hands - the first thing you notice about her is her size; Mariah Carey stands almost 6ft tall in her high-heeled black boots, with broadish hips and a full bosom that, jiggling somewhat under her tight white vest, appears to be unconfined by any sort of support. Wrestling your eyes from the bosom, the next thing you notice is the huge volume of her curly, millionairess-coloured hair, and then the trillions of diamonds on her earlobes, neck wrists and fingers - particularly on the third finger of her right hand which bears a ring decorated with a lifesize diamond butterfly.

'Hi,' she says, with the deep and abraded voice of a Noo Yoik diva. 'Would you like a drink? I've got, like, a drinks banquet here...' She waves the butterfly hand at the table besider her, on which stand three bottles - Diet Pepsi, Diet Lemon Tea Snapple and Evian - each with a perfectly crooked plastic straw. Only the Pepsi has been drunk from. 'So you can join me.' She gives a small-talky, drinks-offering chuckle that sounds a pirate gargling with shale, and asks the PR to get me a glass of water.

'Are you recording with your iPod?' (She pronounces it 'i-paaard'.) 'I got an iPod, but I came to it all late because I'm not very, you know, technical. That little recording mike is cool. I have to get one of those for somebody.

Oh, I say as we sit down. Who are you listening to at the moment?

'ME!' she says, and does the pirate laugh again. She means that she has been in the studio finishing her album, The Emancipation of Mimi, working even more of her notoriously long, perfectionist hours than usual. She always writes and co-produces her songs, but seems to have put an extraordinary amount of work and effort into the new ones; they feature a star-studded cast of collaborators such as Kanye West and Pharrell Williams, and are all in the modern, hip-hop-influenced style, with strong beats and electronic riffs that sound like mobile phone ballads among them, but there are plenty of lyrics about 'feeling hot,' 'DJs spinning the cut' and, indeed, 'a pimp penthouse with a sick hot-tub.' 'Certain people wanted me to put strings on the end of tracks, do different arrangements,' she says, very affably. 'But I was like, no, it's fine. That's what we don't do in 2005.' READ MORE »

Transcript:
"Thrills come in stages when you're doing this because it's like first, you dream about 'Okay, I'm just gonna see my name in print on an album. I'm just gonna see written by Mariah Carey. I'm just gonna see my album in a store.' There are different things that become more and more thrilling like, the first time I did a television show and I went home and I watched myself on Arsenio Hall; and you know the first time I saw someone sitting in an audience, like at the Apollo, singing back to me what I was singing, knowing my lyrics and that was a thrill in itself; and seeing my name on the number one slot in Billboard. First, it's like seeing my name at all on the chart, it's like 'Number 53!' [laughs], and then as it goes up, you know, it's just, it's a continuous process. Each thing that happens for me is a new moment of excitement for me.

Everytime I hear one of my songs on the radio, I sit there and say, 'Okay, now I should have sung that line like this, and done that line like that or oh that's rancid' or whatever 'cause I'm never satisfied with my work. I always feel like I could have done, I could have done it just a little bit differently but you know, I feel that, for a first effort, I'm proud of it and I'm just looking forward to completing the writing that I'm doing for my second album right now and make the best album that I can and just look ahead and not look behind."

Who's Gonna Get The Old Shoe?
The 11th Annual "Silver Old Shoe" Awards will be held on June 27 at the Moscow Operetta Theatre. Last year, the big winner (or loser) was the song "Black Boomer" ("Chyornyi Boomer") which won in 2 nominations: the Song of the Year (the song everybody got tired of), and the Plagiarism of the Year. The organizers of "Silver Old Shoe" clearly showed that the melody of the "Black Boomer" was a total rip-off of the famous smash hit by Busta Rhymes and Mariah Carey, "I Know What You Want."

Mimi In A Bottle
Entertainment Weekly contributor Bethonie Butler writes on PopWatch Blog:

"Let the record show that I am a huge Mariah Carey fan. At her 2003 Charmbracelet tour, she walked past my row and I cried for 30 seconds (stopping only after I saw the horrified glances from my friends). And last September, when I got an email notifying me that I had won front row seats to her The Adventures of Mimi tour, I tracked down the fan club publicist to make sure that it wasn't a cruel joke. (It wasn't - I was this close to Mimi as she hit high note after high note). So a part of me rejoiced when I learned that Mariah will be releasing her own fragrance -called M by Mariah Carey.

As someone who owns an "I heart MC" tank top, two Honey B. Fly t-shirts, an HBF camo hat, and a fan club membership card (really), I feel conflicted. And I must say, the packaging is adorable - a floral-shaped purple bottle with a butterfly on top. But for you, PopWatchers, I've dug deep - past my MC love - to pose this question: Do we really need another celebrity fragrance?

Among Mimi's competitors in the perfumery are purported rival J.Lo, Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyonce, and Hilary Duff. Not to mention, her fragrance is fresh off the heels of Prince's 3121. There's no word yet on what her fragrance will smell like. (What is the scent of staying power?)

You buying, PopWatchers? I'm not one for bottled fame, and I haven't worn perfume since Ralph by Ralph Lauren, but I just might have to have that cute bottle."

Post your comments here.

Mariah Carey on "M by Mariah Carey"
Your average celebrity may not care what the difference is between Moroccan incense and Manhattan street incense - but then again, your average celeb doesn't have 500 hours of beauty school under her jeweled Roberto Cavalli evening-dress straps like Mariah Carey does.

"I always knew what I wanted to do with my life - my mother was an opera singer, and I'd been singing since I started talking and writing songs since I was 13," said Carey during an interview Monday evening before the launch event for her first fragrance, M by Mariah Carey. And Carey - the best-selling female recording artist of all time, with 17 number one singles - clearly didn't need a career plan B. "I just went to beauty school in 11th grade because you could leave school for half a day - and that was cool! - and also because I always did people's hair. But I was always singing during my beauty school classes, so I think my teacher really hated me. I'm actually a beauty school dropout, because by the time I was in 12th grade I was so focused on doing what ended up being my first record [the eponymous 'Mariah Carey,' released in 1990] that I had to let that go."

But it did have a lasting impression on her. "Honestly, if I'm not working with someone who's a really great makeup artist, or someone who really knows how to do hair, I'll be like, 'No, you can't do it this way because hair grows from the roots, not the ends, and cutting it isn't going to work...' and quoting all this theory I learned in beauty school. They'll say, 'How do you know that?' And I'll be like, 'I have 500 hours of beauty school!'"

The fragrance, created by the singer along with perfumers Carlos Benaim and Loc Dong of International Flavors & Fragrances, opens with top notes of marshmallow and sea breeze accord; has a heart of Living Tahitian Tiare flower and gardenia petals, and a drydown of sheer amber, Moroccan incense and patchouli. "I was never a perfume wearer, because some scents would irritate my skin," said Carey. "But this doesn't, and this is the first fragrance I've ever worn."

Each of the ingredients represents something special for her, said Carey. "The inspirations were multiple - places I've been, moments in my life, childhood things like the marshmallow scent in the top note. It's like a subliminal thing - a lightly toasted marshmallow. We were working hard fine-tuning that to the right toast degree, very much like when you sit in front of the fire - which really takes you back to camp, and I'm eternally 12 anyway. Then we have the more sensual bottom note. I went to Morocco a few years ago, and I have a room in my house designed by Mario Buatta which we just extended to the roof - it's like this Moroccan oasis in the middle of New York City. So I burn incense there that I got on the street - I felt really stupid bringing it in to all the bigwigs at Arden, but I really like it. I'm really pretty specific with the things that I like. The Tiare flower has never been a basis for a scent, not the way we've treated it, but I had it around my neck the first time I went to Hawaii, and I never forgot that moment. Creating this [scent] was like creating a song, and that's what I know best. People would ask me how the tour was going, and I'd be like, fine. But the FRAGRANCE..." she laughed. "I don't think people understood that I was really into this, because of the creative scenario. It wasn't like a corporate thing, where it was just like, 'Yeah, put my name on it.' I really got into it."

Butterflies are a trademark of Carey's, and the bottle - a lavender glass orb with a subtle wave design and a butterfly-adorned cap - reflects that passion. "I had an album called Butterfly [which was released in 1997]," said Carey. "It's random, because I was never into butterflies before, but at a certain time in my life, when I was leaving a lifestyle and someone I was married to [record executive Tommy Mottola] - I can't even believe I was married, it's weird to say that! - I was emerging from that world, which had become quite stifling. So I wrote this song 'Butterfly' prior to leaving that house, and on the way out, I saw that my mantel had a butterfly right in the middle. I thought, 'This is ironic!' And I started to wear them."

The bottle was designed by Carey and Arden's Jean Antretter. "The glass stopper; this is my favorite thing. It's sexy to me, to have that little stopper to put the perfume on," said Carey. Eau de parfum spray will be sold in three sizes: 1 oz. for $39.50; 1.7 oz. for $52.50; and 3.3 oz. for $62.50. A 0.5 oz. parfum, $175, and a 6.8 oz. body lotion, $28, will also be sold, added Noreen Dodge, vice president of global fragrance marketing for Elizabeth Arden.

In a first for Arden, Carey's fragrance will be launched globally nearly simultaneously, said Ron Rolleston, executive vice president of Arden. It will be released in about 2,000 U.S. department and specialty store doors, including Macy's, Belk and Dillard's in September, followed closely by door openings in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the U.K., Scandinavia and Spain - for a total of 15,000 doors worldwide.

And if Carey's musical prowess extends to her fragrance, Arden will have a hit on its hands. While none of the executives would discuss sales projections or advertising and promotional spending, industry sources estimated that the scent could do $75 million at retail globally in its first year, with as much as $45 million of that figure to come from the U.S. market. Advertising and promotional spending is estimated at $20 million.

Carey's passion will prove to be a key success point for the fragrance, E. Scott Beattie, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Arden, believes. "If the celebrity is passionate about doing it, if they like the project, they like working on it, [it will do well]," he said. "[Mariah's] loved working on it. She's spent hours, endless hours, designing the bottle and testing the fragrance."

While none of the executives would comment, Carey is said to be reaping a royalty of 5 to 6 percent, with a guaranteed payday of $10 million over the next three years.

"We have long-range plans with Mariah," added Rolleston. "It's our attitude that this is the first of what we think is an opportunity to do a couple of different interesting things with her. What's great is that Mariah has a very broad audience, from 18 to 45, with a median age of 32. What we will make sure that we do in our media mix is target her audience with vehicles which work for them. That doesn't necessarily mean we will follow the same marketing mix that we would with, say, Hilary Duff or Britney Spears. We focus on each of them individually."

While new media has been somewhat the order of the day for Arden's latest celebrity launches, M will have a more traditional media mix, said Rolleston, with national print advertising in fashion, beauty and lifestyle magazines slated to begin in September books. "That works for her audience," he said. The ad was created by advertising guru David Lipman in St. Barth's, said Rolleston. A TV campaign will run at holiday time and on cable TV, he added.

Carey isn't planning to stop with fragrance either: She is also in early stages of developing a lingerie line, and has a self-branded costume jewelry line with Claire's. She's also got an eye on the hair, color cosmetics and skin care categories. "We've been talking about a few different ideas," said Carey. "Anything that's creative. In the beauty world, skin, makeup - I will sit there and do people's hair and makeup. The minute someone gets a new haircut, I'm focused on it. I'm focused on the scent of the skin and I really take care of it. And I'm really excited because I love lingerie, and I've been looking at doing something with that - but that's a whole different story," she said with a smile.

Sales Forecast: Mariah Fragrance To Perform Well
The celebrity fragrance growth engine began sputtering this year, but a new cast of high-profile faces aims to use their star power to reignite the six-year phenomenon.

The upcoming pack of celebrity scents includes M by Mariah Carey; L by Gwen Stefani; Covet Sarah Jessica Parker, the follow-up to Parker's first fragrance, Lovely; Usher's fragrance masterbrand, and Sean Combs' first women's scent, Unforgivable for Women.

Their red-carpet march into department stores this fall will make the retail landscape arguably more star-laden than it has been in the last several seasons. The question is: Can Carey and her famous pals keep the celebrity fragrance engine chugging?

After all, last year sales of women's prestige celebrity scents fell 17 percent, to $140 million, despite the fact that celebrity launches increased tenfold compared with 2003, according to The NPD Group.

Nevertheless, star-backed scents contributed handsomely to the $2.8 billion category last year. William Chappell, an analyst at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey Capital Markets, said that, based on his conversations with beauty firms, including Elizabeth Arden and Revlon, it's clear that celebrity is currently underpinning fragrance sales. He forecasted, "Mariah should give pop to the business."

Referring to Arden's consumer surveys, Chappell said the firm found that 80 percent of all U.S. women and 90 percent of African-American U.S. women view the singer favorably. Carey also scored high in the U.K. and in Spain.

One of the bellwether American stores for celebrity scents is Macy's East in New York, and executives there have given the Carey fragrance a thumbs-up. Micheline Jordaan, vice president and divisional merchandise manager of fragrances, predicted that the launch "will generate a good deal of excitement. Arden is delivering great product - from the juice to the packaging and marketing elements. We are optimistic that this fragrance will perform very well."

There was a time when simply aligning with a celebrity guaranteed a hit, noted Karen Grant, senior industry analyst for NPD. "We do know that having a celebrity who resonates with people raises the awareness of a brand, but today it takes more than a famous name."

In Grant's view, a celebrity fragrance needs to have multiple touch points, such as buzz from an album or fashion line, to succeed. "The fragrance should also be olfactorily different so it can stand on its own," said Grant, adding that younger consumers, who are generally the target audience for these scents, gravitate toward "sexy" notes, such as mossy wood and woody oriental.

E. Scott Beattie, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Elizabeth Arden reaffirmed the point, adding: "The celebrity also has to have some sort of beauty sensibility and fashion sensibility, and she's got to be passionately followed by a demographic that doesn't have to be hugely wide, but it has to be intense, vocal and well organized." Explaining the rationale for Arden's upcoming M by Mariah Carey introduction, he said, "She has a large body of consistently high-quality work. She's been able to develop her fan base globally and that's critical."

Ne-Yo Credits Mariah, Usher For Bringing R&B Back
And he's working with Mariah on her new album

"R&B is definitely making a comeback," he says. "People are (again) realizing the power of R&B music. It has the power to cheer you up when you're feeling bad, or to make you cry. People are realizing the beauty of real music."

Ne-Yo credits Usher's "Confessions" and Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi," the biggest-selling R&B CDs of recent memory, with bringing the genre back after it was shunted aside by hip-hop.

"They proved there's definitely a hunger for R&B out there," Ne-Yo says, though not everything being served was always good. "People were doing it for the wrong reasons. I'd rather do it to provoke a feeling. But some people were doing it just to make money. It was like, 'It worked for this guy, let's do what makes the most money in the least amount of time.'"

While hugely busy as an artist, Ne-Yo is equally in demand as a songwriter. He penned Rihanna's "Unfaithful" and Mario's "Let Me Love You," as well as songs for Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans and B2K. But his biggest hit as a songwriter was "Irreplaceable," which was also Beyonce's biggest hit as a performer.

A slight controversy brewed after she started speaking too loudly of herself as the song's primary songwriter in interviews. Ne-Yo stood up for the song, for which he wrote all the lyrics, pointing out that she contributed melodies and harmonies. Asked whether they'd be able to work together again after that, he says they already have on the rerelease of Beyonce's "B'Day" CD.

Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Usher and Mary J. Blige are among those with whom he's working this year. They're all looking for that special touch from the man who was initially stumped when asked what makes a great song.

"If I had to make a guess, I'd say a relatable subject matter, clever lyrics and catchy, infectious melodies," says Ne-Yo, who likes writing for others as much as assuming the lead-artist role. "At the end of the day, it's all about the music. Whether it's for myself or someone else, it's still my vision."

Mariah In In Touch Germany
From the June 21, 2007 issue of the German In Touch magazine:

She's the copycat queen! Every haircut Rihanna (19, "Umbrella") wears nowadays has already been seen on the heads of other stars. Take Mariah Carey (38) for example. The popdiva is Rihanna's biggest idol. "When I was 14, I knew I wanted to be like her," she says. But Rihanna was not only attracted to Mariah's style: "In my first audition, I performed Mariah's song 'Hero' and won."

The event is set for Sept. 20 at Lincoln Center in New York City. Performers will include Roger Waters, Jon Bon Jovi and John Mayer.

Honorees also include the organization's founder, John Sykes, and NAMM, The International Music Products Association.

Save The Music is dedicated to keeping and enhancing music programs in public schools. According to the foundation, it has provided more than $35 million in new instruments and helped music programs in 1,400 public schools in 80 communities across the country.

Mariah Unveils New Scent "M by Mariah Carey"

M by Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey hopes to hit more than high notes in the fall scent parade with M by Mariah Carey, her new women's fragrance.

Carey unveiled her scent to beauty editors at a cocktail party in SoHo Monday night, which she hosted with Elizabeth Arden, her fragrance licensee. And if Carey's musical prowess extends to her fragrance, Arden will have a hit on its hands: She is the best-selling female musical artist of all time, with 17 number-one singles - not to mention a five-octave range - to her credit. Carey also has won five Grammy Awards, nine American Music Awards and Billboard's "Artist of the Decade" award for her singing and songwriting talents. She is recording a new album.

The M by Mariah Carey scent, which the singer created with perfumer Carlos Benaim of International Flavors & Fragrances, is a floriental. It has top notes of marshmallow and sea breeze accord, a heart of Living Tahitian Tiare and gardenia and a drydown of sheer amber, patchouli and Moroccan incense.

An eau de parfum spray, M by Mariah Carey will be available in three sizes: 1 oz. for $38, 1.7 oz. for $48 and 3.3 oz. for $58. A 0.5-oz. parfum, $175, and a 6.7-oz. body lotion, $28, also will be sold.

The bottle, created by Arden's Jean Antretter, is a lavender glass orb with a subtle wave design and a silver rope-patterned neck. The cap is topped by Carey's signature butterfly. The outer carton features fluttering butterflies, with a front panel that opens to reveal the fragrance.

Another Fashion Faceoff: Posh vs. Mariah
Off The Rack
It's the battle of the Fashionista vs. the Diva! We spotted (and talked about!) Mariah Carey in her peek-a-boo Azzedine Alaia dress at a charity event last week -- only to spot Victoria Beckham doing an interview in Central Park with Matt Lauer in the ivory version of the dress only a few days later! It actually doesn't surprise us that these two ladies have the same taste -- they do both love revealing a certain amount of skin in minidresses, after all.

People wants to know what you think! Who wears their Alaia dress better: Posh or Mariah? Post your comments here.

Video of the Week: "Random Moments..."
Thanks to Moony for sending in this week's Video of the Week: "Random Moments..." (Mariah In Her Own Words), an online video that was available through a link from The Emancipation of Mimi Ultra Platinum edition.

Mariah Quote From The Video:
"Being free is something I actually never thought I would really be. And... I'm beyond grateful for that. I remember once when I was like 6 years old, somebody came over my house, when I was growing up with my mom, and whatever, some drama had gone on. They thought, you know, kids are young, they don't hear what's going on and that's not the case at all. Usually you're more sensitive. And this person was like, 'If this kid makes it, it's gonna be a miracle.' And [teary], I'll never forget that. That kind of like echoed in my head through a lot of times that I went through in the beginning of my career and in the personal life that was behind that. And so, 'if this kid makes it, it's gonna be a miracle,' kind of is like my little, I don't know, I guess my sort of a mantra because I believe in miracles."

On The Cover Addition: Cosmopolitan July 2000
OVER THE RAINBOW
Cosmopolitan Australia - July 2000 Issue

Fed up with all the rumors, Mariah Carey says she's ready to set the record straight about her love life, fluctuating weight and diva reputation. Here, she talks past and present with Judith Newman

Mariah Carey is sitting cross-legged on the bed in Bungalow 5a of The Beverly Hills Hotel - once the love nest of Marilyn Monroe and Yves Montand, and the site of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's violent, vodka-fuelled arguments. But right now, Mariah, who in the 1992 hit Emotions sang about "the way you make me lose control," is oblivious to the room's lustful history. "Watch this," she advises, while very gently scratching down her forearm with an unvarnished fingernail. In less than a minute, the invisible line, extending from her wrist to her elbow, has turned into an angry red welt.

"It's call dermographia," she says with satisfaction. "Any little mark on my skin becomes red and raised." It is a condition related to stress, she explains. "It's pretty good today, actually. It was really bad a few years ago." That was around the time that her marriage to Sony Music Entertainment president and CEO, Tommy Mottola, first began to show signs of unravelling.

Emotion written on skin. You could hardly dream up a more appropriate condition for a singer whose ballads, full of passion and pain, have sent tingles down millions of spines. Indeed, despite the huge success of her 1998 album #1's (a collection of her first 13 number-one hits) and the release of her ninth album Rainbow last November, the last few years of Mariah's life would have given hives to far less sensitive souls. Slim, Shady and Obsessed With Mariah
On his next album, Eminem is said to be dusting off his favorite punching bag: Mariah Carey. The New York Daily News reports that a source close to Em has blabbed to OK! that "there is more than one track that goes into really specific, intimate detail about what went on between Em and Mariah." Apparently, nothing notable has happened in Eminem's life because he's still talking about his supposed affair with Mariah, six years after he alleges it took place (Mariah has always denied any sort of romantic connection with the slim and shady one).

If this is true, Em's seeming mighty desperate for material. Can't he find someone else to supposedly have sex with and then rap about? Is Mariah's sauce really that sweet or is he just wack?

Read a timeline of Em and Mariah's epic feud...and you'll see just how lame he is for still talking about this crap.

Fall of 2001 - After her first 'cross-the-board commercial flop, Glitter, Mariah begins work on its follow-up album. She meets with Eminem a few times for a possible collaboration.

May 2002 - Em launches his first attack on Mariah via "Superman," a track on The Eminem Show that contains the lines: "Buy you ice / Bitch if you died wouldn't buy you life / What you trying to be my new wife? What you Mariah? / Fly through twice"

July 2002 - Not having exorcised the relationship through music, Eminem responds affirmatively when asked by Rolling Stone if he and Mariah were "almost boyfriend-girlfriend." "There's truth to that," he explained. "I don't want to say anything disrespectful because I respect her as a singer, but on the whole personal level, I'm not really feeling it. I just don't like her as a person. I gotta be honest; I learned a lesson from it: Don't believe the hype. I have respect for her, but she doesn't really have it all together. I'll just say that and that she's a beautiful woman."

December 2002 - Mariah hits back at Eminem with "Clown," a thinly veiled dis-back on her ill-fated Charmbracelet album. Mariah never mentions Em by name, but otherwise seems to tailor the song to him with lines like, "I should have left it at / 'I like your music, too'" and "You're no superhero," which would seem to be an indirect reference to "Superman." At the song's close, Mariah ominously promises, "I'm gonna keep your little secret, though," leaving the four people who actually bought that album scratching their heads and wondering, "What could it possibly be?" Later that month, Mariah explains the nature of her relationship with Em on Larry King Live: "I hung out with him, I spoke to him on the phone. I think I was probably with him a total of four times. And I don't consider that dating somebody."

May 2003 - Not content to let things rest, Em publicly shames Mariah at the MTV Movie Awards. Accepting his trophy for Breakthrough Male, Em says, "I can't believe I beat Mariah for Glitter." Though Glitter is over a year old at this point and jokes about it are as played out as yelling, "Talk to the hand!" or "Is that your final answer?", people still laugh.

June 2003 - Smarting over Em's comment, Mariah gets all kinds of catty during an interview with MTV News' John Norris. She calls the longstanding beef "abusive at this point," and compares it to both a "catfight" and a "drag show," perhaps alluding to the fact that Em's secret has something to do with...alternative sexuality. "Get a hobby. Golf is great. Maybe golf. Or maybe knitting," is her advice for Em.

July 2005 - After perhaps two years of golfing and/or knitting, Eminem resurrects the beef with Mariah, who at has come back with her smash The Emanicpation of Mimi and arguably is a bigger star than Em at this point. He plays what he claims are voice-mail messages from Mariah during his notorious Anger Management Tour. The recordings feature a female voice warbling, "I heard you were getting back with your ex-wife," she says. "Why won't you see me? Why won't you call me? You're not calling me..." and lead into Em's song "Puke." A friend of Mariah tells the New York Post that the messages were recorded by an impostor and Mariah is considering suing Eminem for defamation of character. Mariah's manager Benny Medina calls it "tasteless and unnecessarily mean-spirited."

November 2006 - Eminem keeps the flame burning when he revisits his supposed relationship with Mariah again during his Shade 45 show on Sirius Satellite Radio: "Yes, me and Mariah did have a relationship for about a good six, seven months. (But) it didn't work. I wasn't really into what she was into; our personalities collided. She's a diva, and I'm a little more regular, I guess."

February 2007 - This latest development prompts Mariah to deem Eminem "obsessed" with her in a Playboy interview. "Something is clearly askew with him and I'm not quite sure what it is," she says. For someone who's often cited as "crazy" herself, Mariah Carey has never seemed more lucid. He makes her look like the sane one. At least he's good for something.

Mariah Back To The UK In Fall?

Music journalist Rashmi Shastri reports from London, UK:

"I've just got back from the Pinko showroom where everyone showed me the new autumn and winter fashion for Pinko. (See picture on right) They have some really nice clothes! This also means there will be a sale on in the store for last season! This is also Mariah's last month as a Pinko model.

I was told that Mariah will definitely be back in London this autumn for the perfume, album and film promotion!"

Musicians Want Pay for Radio Play
A coalition of musicians has been organized to solicit payment for having their performances played on radio -- and the National Assn. of Broadcasters immediately fired back, threatening to fight any of the organization's attempts to generate legislation. The org, MusicFirst (the latter part stands for "fairness in radio starting today"), is asking that the radio industry be held to the same standards as satellite, cable and Internet radio.

Mark Kadesh, executive director of MusicFirst, said the org is pushing for legislation that would close the "corporate radio loophole" and require compensation to artists.

Founding members include more than 100 recording artists, among them Christina Aguilera, Jimmy Buffett, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Don Henley, Toby Keith, John Legend, Jennifer Lopez, Martha Reeves and Mary Wilson.

Currently, payments from radio airplay are made only to songwriters and music publishers. The U.S. is the only Western free-market nation that does not require radio stations to pay artists and labels when they broadcast performances on the radio, according to the organization.
