Capital Radio Interview
Mariah Carey Exclusive
Mariah Carey chats about her amazing career to date and what she does with all those awards!

Q: You've just been voted the best vocalist of the past two decades! How did that come about?
A: It was Blender Magazine and MTV 2 who did the contest. They told me I was in the top five and asked me to tape a ‘Thank you’ just incase I was number one - and it was! I was really happy, really proud and really excited. And it was voted on by the fans, so I have to thank them for that.

Q: How do you feel about it?
A: I am very grateful for that type of statement, but I can't really say that I feel that I own that title by any means. I feel that I do what I do, and I'm blessed to have the gift of music. But there are some phenomenal singers out there that I have to always give it up to.

Q: Who would you say is your favourite vocalist of all time?
A: It's really hard. Of course Stevie Wonder is always my favourite all around artist. But I'm also very inspired by somebody like Karen Clark, who's a gospel artist. I listen to her a lot, and I listen to a lot of Venessa Bell Armstrong. Mini Riberton, I've loved since I was little. There's so many - Aretha Franklin is another - but there's too many to name, I'd be leaving people out.

Q: You have won so many awards over your career to date - what do you do with all of them?
A: I have these antique award cases that my decorator got me. They mean a lot to me because many of them represent fans voting, and that's what it's all about to me. The awards are for lots of different genres of music, and as a mixed-race person, to cross so many different boundaries really means a lot to me.

Q: You've also just got your 100th certification. Just explain what that means?
A: When your record goes gold, which is a different number in each country, you get a certification - a gold certification. When it goes platinum, you get another certification, and so on and so forth. So, it means I've just got my 100th with 'Charm Bracelet'. The RIAA, the organisation monitors, gave me this blue diamond award, which I think is the first year they have given it out, and we had a fabulous party in LA, which was really fun. I was very grateful because 'Charm Bracelet' the album is very personal to me, and if it's not my best album, it's definitely in the top two because it's one of the most honest records I've ever made. That and 'Butterfly' epitomise who I am as an artist.

Q: Your mother was an opera singer. What did you learn from her about music?
A: She taught me how to harmonise, and a lot about breathing control. But I think the main contribution that she made was teaching me to believe in myself.

Q: Your voice stretches over an amazing five octaves. How do you go about hitting those notes?
A: It's just a feel thing. When I'm feeling it I know I can do it, if not I'll take it down low, but that's the beauty of singing.

Q: What has been the high point for Mariah Carey so far?
A: There have been so many moments that were really high points, but I didn't get to soak them in and enjoy them. This year - particularly with the blue diamond award - has been incredible for me so far. I also just got a Soul Train lifetime achievement award, which was really cool. It did seem a little early to be getting that, but it was still amazing!

Q: What's next for Mariah Carey?
A: I look at every day as a new creative moment. There's a lot of things that I'm doing that aren't necessarily music related, which I'm keeping to myself for the moment. As an artist there are a lot of contributions I can make that might make a difference - the charity work that I do is very important to me.

Q: On September 11th you dedicated 'Never Too Far Away' and 'Hero' to the firemen in New York. Tell us about that?
A: I'm from New York and still live there, and my view used to be of the Twin Towers. And now I look out of my window and it's just void. I think all New Yorkers came together on that day, and I really felt that the firemen and the victims' families need a pick-me-up, so I went to Ground Zero and did that type of thing.

Q: Let's talk about the Congretional Award of Honour that was handed to you for your contribution to youth work and non-profit organisations...
A: That was totally shocking to me. It's nice, but I don't do these charitable things to get accolades, I do it because it really means something to people. Particularly if you're working with young people and you can have a positive impact on their lives, it's really important to do.

Q: Any plans for a UK tour in the near future?
A: I'm definitely coming back to the UK, probably in October. I haven't released any dates yet, but I do know that I will be here. The tour for the 'Charm Bracelet' album is going to be very different for me than the other things I've done because it is such a personal record.

Q: You've collaborated with a host of top artists - how do you decide who's next?
A: It's usually inspired by the track or the record. I don't know who's next, it just sort of happens!

Princess Positive is taking care of the inner Mariah
For the driven pop diva with the one-in-a-million voice, fame and fortune were never in doubt; it was just a matter of when, writes Neil McCormick.

In the superstar stakes, they don't come much more super or more starry than Mariah Carey, the curvaceous pop diva with a five-octave voice, 12-carat smile, 15 No. 1 singles in the US and nearly 150 million record sales worldwide. The statistics speak for themselves: she is officially the biggest-selling female artist in pop history. But that is only half the story. Her rags-to-riches ascent is ripe with enough fertile subplots for a Hollywood melodrama.

Born in 1970, the product of a mixed marriage, a broken home and grinding poverty, she was discovered as a buxom ingenue at a party and married her mentor, Tommy Mottola, one of the recording industry's most powerful executives...

Mariah's Musical Movie Hope
Troubled singer Mariah Carey is hoping the recent successes of "Chicago" and "Moulin Rouge!" will salvage her film career.

The star who featured in 2001's mega-flop "Glitter" is attracting interest because of her singing talents.

Her spokeswoman Cindy Berger says, "Producers are calling Mariah now because they all want to do musicals - but they want people with real voices, instead of having to dub in actresses' voices.

"They figure they can help her with the acting if she sings the songs right. There is interest."

Graham's New Bust Friend
Graham Norton FUNNYMAN Graham Norton has found a new bosom buddy — belly of the ball Mariah Carey.

Singer Mariah looked just swell as the pair filmed tonight’s V Graham Norton chat show on Channel 4.

She wore a tight-fitting top and jeans, revealing her tanned midriff.

Mariah, who turned 33 yesterday, placed a hand on the Irishman’s shoulder and slid her hip against him as he sat wisecracking at the piano.

But the 39-year-old gay comic is probably only interested in being bust mates.

He jets off tomorrow for a week of shows from the Big Apple — but we reckon Mariah’s male fans will still be thinking “core blimey”.

Mariah's Mission Impossible
Mar 28 2003

MARIAH CAREY is doing everything she can to win back public affection.

She is the biggest-selling female artist of all time, but nowadays that won't buy her a No.1 in the wake of a reported breakdown and a record deal that went sour.

But in the true style of a publicity-hungry star, she's gone back to basics to try to win back public affection.

Rather than hide behind blacked-out limos, she's been meeting and greeting the fans as she's plugged her new single Boy (I Need You) and the re-issue of album Charmbracelet.

Mariah celebrated her 32nd birthday yesterday and is now on her way to the Caribbean for a party, but she has popped up all over the place in the past week or so - with photographers close at hand, obviously.

Here, we look at Carey's very public campaign.

Mariah was also mentioned on yesterday's Daily Record:

"Mariah Carey flashes her cash with a belt of pure gold spouting the slogan `automatic princess' to match a brassy `AP' medallion coming half-way down her front."

Mariah Carey Brings Her Own Cook
Mariah Carey proved just how much of a good dinner guest she is on a visit to a friend's London home -- when she turned up with her own chef.

The singing superstar, 33, was slated to eat a meal at a friend's home on March 20, where she's promoting her latest single, "Boy (I Need You).

But the New York native was running late from taping a spot on British music show "Top of the Pops" and didn't want her friend to have to cook for her and her other guests at that late hour.

A source says, "When the show finished at about 10 pm, her driver took Mariah and her chef round to the friend's house."

The whole group then went to a local supermarket, where they bought a few ingredients for the chicken dish Carey's chef cooked.

One of the singer's impressed companions notes, "Mariah's the perfect dinner party guest."

Mariah's Acting Career Gets A 'Chicago' Boost
Friday, March 28 @ 02:17:03 EST
After the success of 'Chicago' and 'Moulin Rouge', the New York Post reports there is renewed interest in Mariah Carey for a musical role, despite her 'Glitter' flop. "Producers are calling Mariah now because they all want to do musicals," a source said. "But they want people with real voices, instead of having to dub in actresses' voices. They figure they can help her with the acting if she sings the songs right." Mariah's rep Cindi Berger responded, "There is interest."

Various Mariah Mentions

  • In VIBE magazine's April issue (w/ Fat Joe, Method Man & Redman on the cover), Mariah is mentioned in the "VIBE Raters" Staff's Current Playlist on page 48. This is a monthly page dedicated to the music that the staffers are bumpin', & they describe their choices in three succinct words. Of Mariah's place on the list, it says "Mariah Carey, Charmbracelet (MonarC): That heavenly voice." This is great news b/c they only choose 15 songs/albums for the month, and they are selected by music journalists. (Thanks Mary)

  • Wendy Williams talked about Mariah on her show today. She rumored that Mariah was asked to do a show that was on par with Chicago. She said that Mariah did not need to take acting lessons....all she needs to do is keep the waist tight, keep the nails done and keep the looks up and she will do better than most of the people out there. She also went on to say that if Mariah went to acting lessons, then she would have to cut back on her social life..and therefore Wendy will have nothing to talk about. (Thanks Harpelang)

  • From an article about Julie Andrews at the Times Herald: "Among other things, she revealed that she sings scales rather than songs in the shower, she loves peanut butter, listens to Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and Patti Austin, “just watched the guys” as preparation for Victor/Victoria, wrote her first children’s book to bond with her new stepdaughter, has five children and five grandchildren with a sixth on the way, and feels that her good friend Carol Burnett “brings out the worst in me.” "

The Hot 100's fastest-growing track at retail is Busta Rhymes & Mariah Carey's "I Know What You Want" featuring the Flipmode Squad, which is up four positions to No. 14. "...I've just been working hard," said Da Brat, who dropped her last LP, Unrestricted, in 2000. "Even though you ain't been seeing me, I've been getting money on the low. I have my own little label and I have artists. Me and Mariah [Carey] have a group coming out called Baby Girl, [and] it's two girls. I've been doing a whole lot of stuff..."

"...Brat said her new record is going to mostly be lighthearted, but she will be kicking some hard lyrics as well..."

"I have a song with Mariah called 'Can't Let Go,' " she continued. "It's an automatic hit. It describes how I can't let go of the industry, I can't let go of the game. I'm always gonna be here."

Da Brat goes in front of the camera to film "In Love Wit Chu's" video in two weeks. "They're rushing me," she said. "It'll be two weeks fo' sho'. " Her album is slated to drop July 29.

    Mariah's Perfume
Alexandra writes: "I just wanted to let you know that, I bought the latest issue of People in Spanish (will be displayed until April 6, 2003) and they have two pages in the mag (pages 104-105) dedicated to showing artists and the perfumes they wear. They have a small picture of Mariah from when she was honored by the RIAA right before this year's AMA's."

Hear is a translation of what it says under her picture:
"No other scented oil has caused so much sensation as Kai. Don't let yourself be deceived by its simple packing; this fabulous fragrance soaks the skins of the most famous. Its harmonious base of gardenia conquered artists like the very talented singer Mariah Carey."

The mag also has a link for the perfume so that people can buy it online! This is the link.

    Mariah Carey has liftoff
IKWYW On AOL A surprise performance by Mariah Carey at a nightclub this weekend got mixed reviews from patrons.

The diva showed up unannounced at G.A.Y., a small club in London, and performed for the crowd of a few hundred. It was announced that she’d appear at 2 a.m., but Carey kept the patrons waiting for more than an hour for the 30-minute show.

“On the stage were around ten very muscular male dancers all with little butterfly wings on their backs,” notes one fan. “Then . . . a day bed is carried by more male dancers with Mariah lying on it covered in a pink veil singing, ‘Fly Away.’ As the song continues, the men all dance around the stage as Mariah was writhing on the sofa bed.” The fan added that “the crowd went wild.”

But according to another patron, “The audience [was] booing throughout and at the end, when the owner of the club gave her flowers, she was supposed to go back through the audience but they took her off the side of the stage.”

    MS NBC

    Now it's Mariah fairy...
HERE’S MARIAH CAREY acting like the Queen of Pop — but then she is singing in front of several hundred gay blokes.

The singer made a surprise appearance at the G.A.Y. club night at London’s Astoria and was a big hit with the boys.

She appeared at 2am and was carried through the crowd to the stage on a pink chaise longue by a troupe of body-builders dressed as fairies.

Mariah performed a half-hour set for the enthusiastic crowd, including her hit Butterfly and new single Oh Boy.

And prepare for shocking news — Mariah is NOT the diva she is made out to be.

The singer made the sort of backstage demands at G.A.Y. that JENNIFER LOPEZ and WHITNEY HOUSTON would be ashamed of. Normally, Mariah travels with her own lighting man to make her look good and has been known to have hotel rooms redecorated to her specifications.

But on Saturday night she asked for just two towels (to wipe her sweaty armpits), a bottle of water and some fruit in her dressing room (melons were not required).

Mariah, the world’s biggest-selling female recording artist, asked out of the blue to do the G.A.Y. gig last week.

LIBERTY X were scheduled to perform but delighted club bosses put them on early to pave the way for Mariah.

Mariah’s show follows in the footsteps of CHRISTINA AGUILERA, WESTLIFE, ATOMIC KITTEN and BLUE. Club organisers are now trying to get MADONNA to perform.

    Last Reports From The U.K
Earlier today, Mariah left England and has already arrived to Zurich, Switzerland. Here's the latest of what Mariah's been up to in England:

Ant And Dec's (Review by HunkyAres)
Mariah Carey performed on Ant and Dec's finale edition of their highly-rated Satuday evening show.
She had a huge response from the audience with lots of whistling cos she was wearing a skirt that showed off her legs. She also had lots of colourful dancers... and bubble machine... a wind machine... and her name on a sign in the background.
She mimed, unfortunately, she forget to open her mouth when the high note at the end of 'Boy' began... and had to quickly open her mouth and pretend she was singing! :-D Nevertheless, she got a great response from the audience!

Performance in G-A-Y Club (Review by Paul)
The audience were kept waiting for an hour, and of course this was at 3am! She entered on a 'sofa' carried through the crowd by about 8 muscled men. Butterfly was playing and she was under a 'net' which I believe was her cocoon. She then sang (mimed) 'Boy I need you' and 'Subtle Invitation' . The audience were booing throughout and at the end when the owner of the club gave her flowers she was supposed to go back through the audience but they took her off the side of the stage.

    Review by Joseph
Basically Mariah was scheduled to perform at 2am, 25 mins after Liberty X had performed....so we waited....and waited......And FINALLY at 3.05am the security guards seperate the crowd into two. The Huge butterfly, the same one used on many tv shows during the TTR promotion, lights up in purple and 'Fly Away' started playing. On the stage were around 10 very muscular male dancers all with little butterfly wings on their backs. Then the lights all focus on the partition amde in the crowd and a day bed is carried by more male dancers with Mariah lying on it covered in a pink veil singing 'fly away'. AS the song continues the men all dance around the stage as mariah was writihing on the sofa bed. She was wearing a long,charcoal/black skin tight Automatic Princess dress, her hair long and curly and an amazing pair of shoes covered in diamontes (I presume). Anyway, she carried on singing, got up, and when it was over the crowd went mad. She then asked us if we liked the outift....of course, the crowd went wild :) So, she lines the guys up and 'Boy (I need you)' comes on with the guys dancing in the background and girls doing dance routines. During the singing of 'Boy' She started taking her ring off and teasing the crowd with who she should give it to. Eventually it was given to a brilliant lamb named Sarah who with no doubt deserves it (Loud Lamb :) The next thing to come off was her pink feather boa which she threw into the crowd. I got this!!!!!!! But eventually I fought my friend and i got part and so did he. Then off came the silk glove and again it was thrown into the crowd which led to people fighting on the floor for it! Anyway, after all this she told us she was gonna perform something from CB that she hadnt done before. Then the music of 'Subtle invitation' came on and she sang it as if reading from a letter, a letter she told us 'she'd written to an ex'. After the song 'Fly Away' came back on and she waved goodbye to us, told us she loved us and left the stage. All In all the wait was worth it, especially for the first performance of 'Subtle invitation'.

    Mariah on E Talk
E Talk Mary from Mariahsfans transcribed this interview with Mariah from the Canadian show E Talk:

“I started wearing it and I found out that my father's mother had also worn one. Umm... and I never knew that, and my father was very ill in the hospital this past year and passed away, and I was talking to one of my cousins who was reminding me that my grandma had one that was important to her. So Charmbraclet’s kind of like has a twofold meaning, one is in honor of my father and his side of the family, kind of recognition of them and also umm... it's each charm says something about me as a person and each song on the album says something about my story".

“Writing sunflowers for Alfred Roy, which was you know written for my father was an emotional moment, singing it was even harder. I could just... I sang the lead vocal once, which usually I’m like nitpicking and going is that okay, was this okay. Even doing the backgrounds, which I did all myself umm... I had to just kind of breeze through it and you know it was a, it... It’s a difficult song.
I don't know if I will do that song live, but it was an important song to write".

“I never have thought of myself as like this famous person, because I’d never experienced the real ruthless side of the press, the media, but you know what, at the end of the day those people hiding in the bushes are only trying to make a living, unfortunately you know it’s at the expense of someone else’s privacy and you know life”.

“My fans are like an extended family for me, they get me through everything and it’s like, when they give me the feedback … okay like someone said to me yesterday, she was like you are saving my life, I’m going everywhere you go I’m hear, you know, these songs are getting me through the worst period of my life. I wouldn’t be here if you hadn’t written through the Rain, if you hadn’t done this, this was a young girl! So I mean there was no greater compliment and there’s also no greater feeling of validation or like, okay this is my purpose here, like this is, it’s all fun and games to do cute songs like Boy(I need You) and you know cute, cute songs that make me feel happy and allow me to be fun in the video , but when somebody is moved by a song like My Saving Grace on my album or Through The Rain, umm… that’s what matters the most!”.

    Making A Splash
'All suited up, Mariah Carey (pictured in January) frolicked in the waves of St. Bart's in the French West Indies. It's apparently a favorite hideaway for Carey, who also sought refuge there last year after EMI paid her $28 million to terminate her record contract, PEOPLE noted in April' (Captioned picture is in Gallery 3).

    More Stories/Pictures From The UK
The following report is from Andrew, about Mariah's appearance in TOTP:

I wanted to tell you how amazing yesterdays TOTPs was and how good Mariahs fans where. The day was amazing - to update. We arrived early at the BBC - there where loads of Mariah fans (Always tell by the butterflys). We got let into the holding bay, had a drink and was hyped. We got let into the studio and warmed up - a band called Placebo played first. Mariah was on second, she sang BOY - without the rap in it. She mimed but it was amazing and she looked great. She had her hair in two bunches, a dark green tight top and a beigh skirt on - she looked brilliant!!!

As she came of the stage she signed one of my cds - and we where told she would be back on later FOR ANOTHER PERORMANCE.
They saved MARIAH till last, she sang BRINGING ON THE HEARTBREAK (More than likely going to be next single int he UK!!!) - She looked amazing - something like the video - very hippyish!!!

She had a sky blue top and a long skilt - a blue sequened butterfly on her back - it looked brilliant - she had beige shoes on like the boy video. The interesting thing was that a person (The guy with the dreadlocks - short from UK Mariah presents!!) shouted - I cant wait to see the video - SHe said " She is waiting to see the final cut as it isnt finished yet - so we may have to wait a bit longer but what she wore was like in the video!

    Mariah Updates From The UK
Mariah In England This visit is going so well for Mariah and her UK fans! Early Wed morning she arrived at 4:00am and had photos taken with fans and signed autographs. The mariahcareyuk.com team took the opportunity to present Mariah with a book illustrating our recent reluanch with all the cartoons. Mariah said it sounded cool and she wanted to read it properly.

Wed afternoon we saw her leave her London hotel to go to the Graham Norton show. Her ensemble was very appropriate for Graham Norton's camp show! She posed for the many press members and then went on to sign autographs again. It was really cool because there were some fans who hadn't seen Mariah before and they were very excited. There should be some excellent fan photos from this time at the hotel. Mariah spotted two of our team members and they got to ask her if she had a chance to read the book we gave her in the early hours of the morning. She said "Yes! I love it, it's great!" so we we're all real happy Mariah had the chance to see the work we've done on the new design and that she commented on it!

We spoke with a fan who went to the Graham Norton show and they said Mariah was the sole guest and performed Through The Rain and Boy (I Need You). At one point Graham presented Mariah with a music box and she said it was cute but then she opened to reveal an unexpected surprise!

For another part of the show Mariah had to throw a dart at a board with fans' pictures on from all over Europe. The one the dart landed on Mariah phoned to say hi! Mariah impressed Graham immensley by recognising and naming several of the fans featured on the board! Graham had to assure the audience that it wasn't fixed. It just shows that Mariah truly loves her fans and remembers faces!
