SHOW REVIEWS
MIAMI, FL: "Saturday night at downtown Miami's American Airlines Arena, Carey showed a near sellout crowd that she and superstardom definitely still belong together. This kick-off date of her Adventures of Mimi tour had plenty of glitter, but only the good kind." [read more: Miami Herald, Aug. 6, 2006]
TAMPA, FL: "Her show at the St. Pete Times Forum on Monday - just the second night on her current U.S. tour - suffered an array of bumps and clunks unbe-fitting a polished diva. The show started way late, the seven-piece backing band was far too loud and obtrusive, and her dance troupe often scuffed around like a gang of misfit mimes. But thanks to an array of high-wire vocal derring-do, the 36-year-old Long Island native never lost an adoring crowd of 16,493 fans for too long." [read more: St. Petersburg Times, Aug. 8, 2006] ATLANTA, GA: "Carey sometimes seemed unsure whether she was supposed to be onstage or off. And there was a clumsy moment about halfway through the show in which she started "Always Be My Baby," stopped to sing a bit of "Your Girl," then went back into "Baby." But moments like these were kind of endearing - they revealed Carey to be human, as opposed to a robotic diva." [read more: Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Aug. 10, 2006] PHILADELPHIA, PA: "Her stage presence is ungainly - she doesn't walk, much less dance, with grace - but Carey's famously frilly four-octave voice provided the athletic oh-wows, and she moved slowly about the stage in a series of hubba-hubba underwear and evening-gown ensembles, singing 16 years' worth of palliative pop and R&B and hip-hop-flavored hits." [read more: Philadelphia Inquirer, Aug. 14, 2006] TORONTO, ON: "Carey's still got THAT VOICE. After hearing hundreds of American Idol rejects emulate her show-offy high-register warbling, one would think the source material would now be poison to the ears. Not so. Carey can still show those wannabe punks how it's done. Bow down to your queen." [read more: Toronto Sun, Aug. 14, 2006] MONTREAL, QC: "She broke the spell mid-song with a warm, "What's up, Montreal?," then belted out an ad lib. It was the first of several (but not too-too many) displays of her trademark power and range." [read more: Montreal Gazette, Aug. 16, 2006] ATLANTIC CITY, NJ: "At the end of the night, nonbelievers may feel like they ate at McDonald's for 90 minutes. It was enjoyable while you were doing it, but in retrospect, you could have spent your time better doing something else." [read more: Press of Atlantic City, Aug. 19, 2006] BOSTON, MA: "But Carey's catalog is even more impressive than her vocals and the MCs who have complemented her choruses. For every dance track she flung in the beginning of her set, she unfurled a "Vision of Love" or "Hero." Her fame might have briefly faded from 2000 to 2003, but Carey's vocal chords never left the building." [read more: Boston Herald, Aug. 22, 2006] NEW YORK, NY: "Give her a molehill, she'll make you a mountain. Give her a chance for a concert that should be a victory lap, she'll make it feel more like - yes - a roller coaster. There were plenty of not-quite-life-threatening ordeals that must have made Ms. Carey stronger." [read more: The New York Times, Aug. 25, 2006] UNCASVILLE, CT "Let's be brief. After all, that is the word that best describes Mariah Carey's performance at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday night... While some could argue that 45 minutes is quite long enough for a lot of performers passing themselves off as concert draws these days, Carey actually seemed to be getting at least a passing grade when she thanked everyone and waved goodbye. " [read more: The Republican, Aug. 28, 2006] ALBANY, NY: "And lo, The Voice did deign to make an appearance, finally, at the Pepsi Arena on Friday night, an hour after the opening act had finished. And lo, The Voice was good. At times, The Voice was great -- soaring, passionate, magnificent in its range and acrobatics." [read more: Times Union, Sept. 2, 2006] JONES BEACH, NY: "There's no augmentation - what she has at the moment is what the audience gets, and even with the wind blowing and her midriff bared, Carey managed some gorgeous notes that were right on target. It's fascinating to watch her try and miss them, too, because her mistakes are often more interesting than her accomplishments." [read more: Fox 411, Sept. 5, 2006] VERONA, NY: " And what a spectacle her show turned out to be, with plenty of ups to more than balance a couple of dips... Best of all, Carey's voice was pure and golden. She easily reached her trademark high notes that sound like a happy bird singing its morning song. And the crowd loved hearing that voice." [read more: The Post-Standard, Sept. 6, 2006] WASHINGTON, DC: "The frequent strolls backstage repeatedly derailed the concert's momentum, which was a shame since Carey was in such fine voice; no longer an emotionless vocal technician, she even sounded like a credibly gritty soul singer during an inspired reading of her first hit, 1990's "Vision of Love."" [read more: Washington Post, Sept. 9, 2006] DETROIT, MI: "Carey is not a trained dancer like Janet Jackson, and she doesn't use her stage show to make elaborate political statements like Madonna. (Even Britney Spears' elaborate arena shows have more of a narrative arc than Carey's.) But Carey's strength is and always has been her voice, and that amazing, soaring instrument was what took center stage Saturday night. There was not a lip-synched note to be heard, and her voice towered in songs such as the gospel-flavored 'Fly Like a Bird' and a luminous rendition of her first hit, 'Vision of Love.'" [read more: The Detroit News, Sept. 10, 2006] CHICAGO, IL: "As demonstrated by her efficient and mostly just-right set at the United Center on Monday night, Carey's definitely back on track. Yes, the smile permanently stretched across her face was sometimes creepy and cold rather than warm and inviting, and her stage moves occasionally seemed more about hitting her marks than connecting with the crowd. But Carey also looked comfortable and confident, a feeling no doubt bolstered by the near-capacity crowd." [read more: Chicago Tribune, Sept. 12, 2006] HOUSTON, TX: "But wordly diva - with a knowing wink - seems to suit her best, and during her 100-minute set, Carey played the part with exuberance, confidence and delicious abandon... And then there's that voice. Throughout the evening, Carey did things with her instrument that most pop singers wouldn't even attempt in the privacy of their shower. The trademark shrieks came early, during the disco-throwback Heartbreaker and fluffy pop-charmer Dreamlover." [read more: Houston Chronicle, Sept. 15, 2006] DALLAS, TX: "Ms. Carey made sure to showcase her vocal prowess every chance she got. Why waste that five-octave range in front of 12,000 adoring fans, right? Especially since she can still belt it out. Wearing a body-hugging yellow dress with a slit up to there, she dusted off "Vision of Love," her 1990 career-launching smash, to impressive effect. Sure, she gave the song even more vocal acrobatics than it needs, but she hit every note and then some." [read more: The Dallas Morning News, Sept. 17, 2006] WINNIPEG, MB: "Even sans the lime-garnished Cosmos, Mariah Carey knows how to put on a helluva girls' night. The main ingredient? Herself, of course... the diva gave her 10,000 mostly-female fans little opportunity to whisper snidely about Mimi's less-than-perfect past at the MTS Centre last night, thanks to a little something called The Voice." [read more: Winnipeg Sun, Sept. 20, 2006] EDMONTON, AB: "Mariah hit the "Star Search" moment early, unleashing a barrage of high notes so sweet they brought tears to the eyes of the toughest security man. Those pipes really went into overdrive in the love ballads - the high diving act we had all come to see. Songs like Heartbreaker and My Own featured notes so high they could only be heard by dogs, others that shattered every piece of glass in the arena. Yes, I exaggerate, but the point is made: Mariah can sing." [read more: Edmonton Sun, Sept. 22, 2006] VANCOUVER, BC: "Her voice sounded fine as well. By "My All" from 1997's Butterfly, she appeared to be nailing the highs, lows and points in between. Plus, the tune's disco refrain that accompanied the dancers' backflips is totally retro cool." [read more: The Province, Sept. 24, 2006] CALGARY, AB: "As Carey belted out the high notes during her performances of Heartbreaker and Dreamlover, even the most cynical of those in attendance (A.K.A. husbands dragged there by their wives) had to be impressed. These were the moments that made the glitter and glitz tolerable. These were the moments when the star of the show was truly shining." [read more: Calgary Sun, Sept. 25, 2006] SACRAMENTO, CA: "Throughout the set, which came in at just under two hours, the Long Island native exuded a poised charm. Basking in the love of her audience -- tossing off coy waves, flirtations and no fewer than two dozen Sacramento shout-outs -- Carey was at once a seasoned diva and the homegirl next door. You admire her star power and awe-inducing voice but can still imagine that, just for kicks, Mariah might want to hang out with you at the mall on a Saturday afternoon." [read more: Sacramento Bee, Sept. 30, 2006] LAS VEGAS, NV: "On this night, Carey sang like a newborn emotes: loudly, freely and occasionally uncontrollably. She tore into early hit "Vision of Love" so forcefully that you could practically see the veins bulge in her neck as her voice leapt from one octave to the next. And on the soaring "Fly Like A Bird," she scatted feverishly over some dense percussion." [read more: Las Vegas Review-Journal, Oct. 2, 2006] OAKLAND, CA: "But that sentiment colored the entire night. At times, as cameras flashed over the audience, fans could be seen with tears in their eyes, wrapping their arms around themselves as they sang along to hits like "Always Be My Baby" or the feisty heart-tugger "We Belong Together," only equaled by Carey herself, whose immaculate made-up eyes welled up with tears during the latter song. But that is the true gift of this singer. While Jennifer Lopez may claim to be Jenny From the Block, Carey shows that she still lives there, even if she gets there in a chauffeur-driven roller coaster. " [read more: San Francisco Chronicle, Oct. 4, 2006] SAN DIEGO, CA: "Those who insist it's high time Mariah got her due – those thrilled that her wildly overvalued album "The Emancipation of Mimi" was both last year's sales champ and an inexplicable Grammy darling – surely have already determined these shows are the culmination of her comeback: a well-earned victory lap for a show-biz survivor. That it is in more ways than one, and only a jealous hater would deny that she isn't deserving of this celebration." [read more: The OC Register, Oct. 5, 2006] LOS ANGELES, CA: "The golden-voiced singer delivered a top-notch concert. But she also set the stage for a marriage proposal by one of the city's top morning radio jocks; self-diagnosed an allergic reaction; caused audience members to either weep or canoodle; and named a baby. The only thing she didn't do was validate parking." [read more: LA Daily News, Oct. 9, 2006] PHOENIX, AZ: "There were plenty of costume changes during Carey's set, with a DJ laying down a slick beat as Carey changed from the black bikini to long black tight shorts and a glittery bra to a flowing blue/green gown. Carey saved her most recent smash, "We Belong Together," for the encore, but by then the crowd had been treated to a show full of of hits." [read more: East Valley Tribune, Oct. 11, 2006] |
