WELCOME

One thing that is constantly proclaimed in various TV shows and glossy magazines is that your clothes and style should always show your personality, and who better follows that motto than Mariah? Mariah's clothes, or "ensembles" as she likes to call them, are always grand, sexy and flirty (and sometimes just plain over-the-top), yet always worn with that endearing childlike, disarming overcoat. A perfect match to her equally contradictory persona.

Join me on this rollercoaster ride of Mariah's wardrobe that will chronicle the best-selling female artist of all time, and moreover fashion icon's, journey through this not-so-easily navigated runway known as haute couture. There will be ups and downs, but as we all know, Mariah always ends on a high note.

11/14/2006: "Rooftop Déjà Vu?"

Hello to all my little fashion victims! wink

FINALLY Mimi is emancipated from her what feels like year-long vacation (haven't we missed her?!), just like a butterfly from its cocoon. Sooo, to the question on everyone's mind..! Did our favorite diva stun her ex, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, at last week's Joe Torre Stay At Home Foundation Gala? Well, let's just say I hope this, what looks to be a leftover from her tour collection, was just her arrival/departure ensemble...

Okay, first off, the good: the top surely frames those two big stunners well. satisfied And... okay, that's all I got.

This dress looks cheap, thanks to those unflattering side cutouts. Why she keeps insisting on those is way beyond me. The thing is, you can't really go wrong with a long black gown, IF you just choose to accentuate your advantages. Why not ditch the Barbieish cutouts and opt for a nice long slit to show off those gorgeous legs (and what looks to be a pair of fabulous matching pumps)?

A lovely black ensemble also gives you the fabulous opportunity to really go all out with the make-up - so where are the dramatic, seductive smoky eyes? With such a demure lip make-up, you really need a sharper eye make-up to avoid that washed out look. Also, with a halterneck cut, sweeping up the hair (think "Don't Forget About Us" video) would leave the shoulders exposed, which would make for a more slimming effect.

Grade: C-

I think Mariah looks really good in this ensamble! her hair looks great and so does her dress, the only problem i think is the make-up. she should have more dramatic eye make up and maybe a brighter or darker lipstick/lipgloss.

They say "Love is blind". I happen to fall head over heels in love with Mariah, so I always turn a blind eye on whatever she's wearing. Plus I don't give a sh*t about what Mr Blackwell may say about her style.

mariah, fire your stylist now!!!! this dress looks hideous. i am so tired of those side cutouts. this reminds me of the outfits she wore for her tour, which i thought looks really cheap. first off, if you are gonna wear cutouts, you better have a slender body. mariah is just so bulky that all you see is her stomach and boobs. revealing too much skin in places that are so unnecessary can really be a turnoff, and the word "sexy" automatically turns to "trashy". GRADE: C-

I love that outfit!! smile

i think she should return to the way she used to be dressed during the butterfly era ( + her natural breasts!) or even last year when her album came out. i don't know what's happening to her outfits lately it's getting worse and repetitive as well as for her haircuts. during charmbracelet she used to vary her haircuts now she always has the same hair it's pretty boring. her make up made her look fat or like pamela anderson and co.

This dress is just unflaterring for the occasion. I don't understand why she exposes her breast like that...She really looks like a porn star dressing in that way.

I think it's time to fire the stylist.

Hello David,

I totally agree with you. I don't like this eather. She could look more sexier and elegant than too choose for this dress.
I don't like it how she shows her breast in that way....

maybe you should grade according to catagory of event or occassion? So if it s a Tour ensemble say "Tour" if its a formal wear then say "formal" and if its casual wear "Casual" so that people won't B*tch about how you gave one look a better grade over something else LOL

I can agree on the tour outfit being unflattering from certain angles, but how is the Japan airport one unflattering? I think her body looks great in it, and it's not like it was for a special event or anything. I think she looked fabulous (save for the hair) for just getting off a plane!

Anyway, readers, do you think I should revise the grading system?
For example, I do think this latest black dress deserves a D-, compared to say the beautiful red dress in the top logo, which I'd give a B. Maybe I need to do a general grading system to avoid confusion?

Please post your thoughts everybody!

Apart from the occasions, both previous outfits very quite unflattering to Mariah's figure. This one, perhaps wasn't something you should wear to a Gala, but at least it was flattering. In the end, it's about HOW Mariah looked, not how appropriate her outfit was. And Mariah looked WAY better in this outfit than the others!

Jeremy,
You have to keep in mind I'm also judging ensembles based on what occasion it is. A tour ensemble can be over the top and borderline "tacky", it's all in good fun anyway. With this tour ensemble I picked what I felt was the best one from throughout the tour, and I REALLY had to look hard. So, when comparing it to the other ones (the yellow and blue dresses, the hotpants/bra, etc) it definitely deserved a B+. It's a relative grade.

As for this latest dress, really the only thing that makes it any better than the tour ones, is the color. The cutouts look cheap and only help to make her waist look wider. Also, remember this is a gala event - do you really think this kind of dress is appropriate for that?
Lastly, the hair and make-up is a huge portion of any look, and here I'm sorry to say, they failed miserably.

Hope that answers your questions! smile

Gotta agree with everything you said here David, she could have looked betta for DJ, that dress with the side cut outs is old, and she does seem to be stuck in the "Tour mode fashion" LOL Mimi pleaase just get GOOD stylist pleasee

so you go from one extreme to another.....to be honest, i can't see how you gave this ensemble/makeup a D- when you gave her airport arrival a B-. you're right about the tour leftover biz.....she needs to stop with the cutouts.

I think this dress is hot and it looks great on her.

The dress is okay, but I thought she'd be her very very top notch best for Derek and all of his teammates but she's using the fashion from the show too much lately. Looks like she lost a few pounds she gained from when the tour began (what hapened? she was skinny from April to the end of July! It's like the week between the Pepsi Smash show and Miami show she gained 20lbs, but its cool). The hair cound be like DFAU video. And she really does have the best eyes, so more attention to them, the shoes seem half a size too small, and the body make up or spray on tan and her face do not match at all.

Yeah, so I don't understand how you can give this ensamble a D when you gave the horrific "Black Is The New Black Pt. II" ensamble a B+... What gives?

That mini skirt was way too short for MC and at many angles she looked, well....

This dress is gorgeous. The side thingy may be a little over-done, but the ensamble as a whole is very flattering to her figure.

I kind of like this dress, although she's recycled the style of dress quite a bit lately.

I love is the neckline, because of how much clevage it gives her. The shoes are ok, but it looks like she's scrunching her feet in them.

I totally agree with you about the eye/shaper eye make up, though.
