WELCOME

Like Mariah would say of her personal life, her album sales and chart success have also been 'unparalleled.' She's had stratospheric peaks, valleys and everything in between over the course of her career, spanning nearly two decades. In this section, I will post/archive chart, certification, and sales information for upcoming and past releases from credible sources.

If you have any questions or suggestions regarding Mariah's chart and award history, email me at michael@mariahdaily.com.

[Previous entry: "Mariah's Soundscan sales of the past week"]
[Next entry: "All I Want For Christmas Is You re-enters the UK charts"]

11/14/2007: "All I Want For Christmas Is You chart trajectory: 11/15/07"

11/15/07 #160 (6,520) 600,723 3.1 million

Column one: Date
Column two: Digital chart position (sales)
Column three: Total sales to date
Column four: Radio audience impressions

Airplay is right around the same this year as it was last year, but sales are 24% higher than they were last year, despite being 16 spots lower on the charts. All I Want For Christmas Is You will certainly be a million seller by the end of next Christmas. razz

Ferrero,

If I offended you I do apologize but my point is also there are lots of other Christmas releases also being sold for $7.99 on iTunes that are nto doing as well as Mariah. It is a testament to her popularity and the admiration people have for the album, not the price tag that has elevated her, otherwise numerous $7.99 releases would be well ahead of her. It has nothing to do with being sensitive just being respectful and not diguising thinly veiled jabs as being supportive.

I am a Mariah Carey fan.
I love Merry Christmas and AIWFCIY.. its great to see them doing well on the charts

Why should i berate my most favourite singer? I agree that there may not be enough MC copies out there but its indeed sold at 7.99 thus its doing better on the Itunes Album Chart this year!

I think MC fans has to learn not to be so sensitive...

I saw the following posted on Pulse Music Board by jenglisbe and he is so very right. Since Celine is still with Sony her Christmas disc will be made available in stores more versus Mariah no longer being their artist. But MC is kicking her butt in the digital realm on iTunes so I think the gap will still not be that much once it is all over this year.

Here is the comment:

"Since Merry Christmas has been top 10 (and now top 3) on the holiday chart at iTunes for a few weeks but is in the 30s overall, it's clear that CD sales are where it's suffering. I think you can assume lack of copies available is having an effect."

Amen.

Ferrero,

It's not necessarily a discount because that is the same price it sold for last year at Best Buy when I bought a copy for my church music director, and even if it was lowered who cares it is still selling. Why do fans have to try and berate Mariah by pointing out these things? What matters most is that people still want to purchase the album after 13 years. Let's celebrate that fact instead of giving other people reasons to hate on her and accuse her of price fixing to get what she wants.

LOL its a typo.. i wanted to put 40k...

Its interesting because Merry Christmas is sold at a discount price of 7.99 on Itunes... this explains the better sales this yr

but prob its still not enough to make up the gap as you can see Merry Christmas's chart position on Holiday Albums Chart is lower than Celine's

Here is the list from Billboard that was generated less than a month ago:

The current issue of Billboard magazine lists the Top 10 selling Christmas albums of the Soundscan era (i.e March 1991 onwards):

Top 10 Selling Christmas Albums
01. Miracles - The Holiday Album - Kenny G. 7,195,000
02. These Are Special Times - Celine Dion 4,838,000
03. Merry Christmas - Mariah Carey 4,801,000
04. Christmas In The Aire - Manheim Steamroller 3,683,000
05. Fresh Aire Christmas - Manheim Steamroller 3,548,000
06. Manheim Steamroller Christmas - Manheim Steamroller 3,391,000
07. Now That’s What I Call Christmas! vol. 1 3,215,000
08. When My Heart Finds Christmas - Harry Connick Jr. 2,970,000
09. Faith: A Holiday Album - Kenny G. 2,735,000
10. Beyond The Season - Garth Brooks 2,649,000

This is why I keep these figures so we can back up information on statements people make. As you can see the gap is nowhere near 400K. Both albums are selling right now and Mariah continues to lead on iTunes.

Marc | Thursday, November 15, 2007
Ferrero,

No. The gap is not 400K. The last reported gap between the two releases was 36K.

ferrero | Thursday, November 15, 2007
AIWHCIY is struggling to enter top 100 on Itunes singles chart. Last yr this time its already 85th... but airplay is definitely higher than last yr this day (3.199m)

Mariah won't overtake Celine this yr.. or even next yr... theres still a gap of abt 400k?

Marc | Thursday, November 15, 2007
It is possible for Mariah to surpass Celine at some point with their respective Christmas releases but Celine's was re-issued this year and she had a new album out, so these work in her favor but I won't totally count out Mariah. She'll keep the pressure on Celine for sure.

i just wanted to mention that 'all i want for christmas is you' is the only modern christmas song to make it onto the top holiday songs chart on billboard. that's awesome!!! go mariah!!

thien | Thursday, November 15, 2007
just what i wanted to know. thanks for the comparison and keep up the work. i'm anxious to see how it's going to do in the upcoming weeks....

i'm also interested in 'merry christmas' album sales each week and whether it will surpass celine dion's christmas album by the end of the year....
