WELCOME

Like Mariah would say of her personal life, her album sales and chart success have also been 'unparalleled.' She's had stratospheric peaks, valleys and everything in between over the course of her career, spanning nearly two decades. In this section, I will post/archive chart, certification, and sales information for upcoming and past releases from credible sources.

If you have any questions or suggestions regarding Mariah's chart and award history, email me at michael@mariahdaily.com.

10/19/2006: "Just how big was Mariah in the Music Box era?"

  • In 1994, the pinnacle of Mariah's popularity in the UK, she sold over 2.4 million albums and singles (equivalent to over 8 million in the US), making her the #2 and #3 singles and albums artist of the year. Music Box was also the biggest selling female album in the UK of 1994.

  • Music Box was the overall best selling album of 1994 in Australia.

  • Music Box outsold Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard becoming the first non-Dutch female album to sell over 400,000 copies. Music Box still remains as the best selling album by a non-Dutch female artist (tied with Celine Dion's Falling Into You) in the Netherlands.

  • Music Box was the first non-Swiss female studio album to sell at least 200,000 copies in Switzerland.

  • Music Box was the first non-Taiwanese studio album to sell at least 500,000 copies in Taiwan.

  • Music Box tied with Michael Jackson's Thriller as the best selling non-Japanese studio album of all time, until Mariah beat her own and Michael's record with Daydream.

  • Music Box is the only non-Korean studio album to sell at least 1 million in Korea.

  • From March of 1994 to November of 1994, Music Box was to #1 in over 10 countries, top 10 in at least 17 countries and sold an additional 10 million copies worldwide on top of the 10 million copies worldwide it had already sold.

  • Music Box has reached Platinum status in 32 countries, translating to over 25 million in global sales to date, placing it among the Top 10 best selling female albums of all time.

Some people, especially those in the US, seem to be surprised or displeased with the fact that "Without you" is Mariah's biggest hit ever worldwide. They even doubt whether Mariah has a signature song in her entire career. The answer to this doubt is "Without you". The song may sound too shmaltzy to some of you, but it was it which helped Mariah win the love of millions and millions of people around the world.

i'm just wondering but did 'hero' also make an impact to world sales for music box? 'without you' seems to be the main reason why the album sold so well but what about 'hero'? how big was this song worldwide? this is my all-time favorite mariah song and it seems to have such an impact to many people.

I will never understand why Sony didn't have her do a world tour when the album was selling so many copies worldwide.

'Without You' really helped the sales of 'Music Box'. 'Without You' was a massive worldwide hit, it's one of the biggest ever and it's certainly Mariah's biggest hit worldwide to date.

'Without You' was Top 5 and #1 hit in all the big markets and made 'MB' reach it's chart peak position in many countries.

The world sales of 'Music Box' went from 10M to 20M in just 8 months, thanks to 'WY' (mostly) and 'ATYAF'.

i will never understand how Music Box was so big. was for the ballads? was Without You that made it a huge cross over smash hit album? was the diva golden era at its best? if so, why didn't Emotions catch up the train? (and i'm referring to the lead pop singles: Emotions and Can't Let Go).

Music Box will always be a big dillema to me.
