From La Presse:
Yes, Tunisia had high hopes when they tried to bring the biggest star of showbiz in the world to their modest country in a stadium meant for the steps of giants. Mariah Carey, the American superstar, announced her comeback last night at the Olympic Stadium of El Menzah.
What did the Olympic Stadium of El Menzah become 100 tons of material, a week of work to put a 70m stage up, 200 projectors, and six giant screens later? Quite simply, a place ready for the biggest show of this world with sound so loud it will shake the body and can reach up to 85 decibels. The music offers plenty for the ears, plenty for the eyes, and plenty for the heart. And it doesn't matter which decibels, mind you! It's the sensual voice of a diva with five octaves.
One surpasses everything to live in the magical moments like the lives of the Tunisians! One of the greatest stars of the world sings for them! The audience is in for a fabulous trip! And the trip, the whole country came to attend this megashow organized by Interval Events. In the beginning of the afternoon, the opening of the doors (at 5:00 pm to be exact), the audience was there. At 9:00 pm, the steps and ground in front of the stage were filled with plenty of people and noise outside! There was a balcony with security officials as well. The audience was in good spirits, ready to start the party. The audience was composed mostly of young people, young couples, but also of families. One even saw a few seniors on the steps. The audience was composed equally of international journalists to cover this show.
10:40 pm: the lights go out. The Olympic Stadium of El Menzah is bathed in a night of celebration, there is nothing but the flashes the light up the portable screens. The huge show started with the voice of the superstar, resonating and alerting the audience of her arrival. "Hello Tunisia!" she cries and the audience crashed together into a single wave of people. Mariah Carey was there, in flesh and blood. No more people who had taken over the steps in the entrance interrupted the singer of 5 octaves as she generously served the Tunisians.
Sensually, extraordinarily at ease on stage, Mariah Carey seemed to have found herself at the Olympic Stadium. An artist who has intrigue, of the voice and of presence, for an audience that watched the most beautiful videos of the star. An historic moment for the audience! An audience who will be sure to also applaud loudly for a show of "Tarab." Because it's that what it was last night at the Olympic Stadium: a Tunisian audience who brought with them their 3,000 years of heritage. "I love you," Mariah Carey said to them.
From Yahoo! France:
For her return to the stage after being gone for three years, the American singer Mariah Carey gave a concert that caught the attention of the press Saturday night in Tunis, at the Olympic Stadium of El Menzah.
Facing the heat wave, the young people traveled towards the stadium in the afternoon, directed by the 3000 security officials. Other than the Tunisian fans, the admirers of the singer came mostly from European countries, notably France, Itale, the UK, and Germany.
The American diva, with 160 million albums sold worldwide, gave herself to please her fans. For an hour and a half, Mariah Carey performed her biggest hits "It's Like That," "My All," and "Fantasy" though skipping "Always Be My Baby" and sang a number of titles from her last album The Emancipation of Mimi.
Impressed by the ambiance, the singer rested between songs and told the audience: "I'm very happy in Tunisia. I love you," thanking the Tunisian people warmly and the first lady of Tunisia Leila Ben Ali, who presides over an assocation for employment of the disabled, with a portion of the proceeds of the concerts in Tunis benefiting her assocations.
The night ended a little after midnight on a more romantic note with "Don't Forget About Us," "Vision of Love," "Without You," and "We Belong Together."
"It was fantastic," gushed Caroline Cosgroune, a British woman who lengthened her trip in Tunisia with her husband and two daugthers to see their "favorite singer."
Mariah Carey will give her second concert Monday in the same stadium, as a prelude to a tour that will hit 30 cities in the US and Canada.
From La Presse:
The international diva, Mariah Carey, performed at the Olympic Stadium of El Menzah in Tunis in a gradiose concert, marking the launch of the star's summer tour.
Although it was an audience composed mostly of young people from Tunis, those from different regions of the country as well as foreign countries came in masses -- a total of 40,000 spectators -- to attend this major musical event in the summer of 2006 and to see one of showbiz's biggest stars.
Mariah Carey live in Tunis was equally the major media event in other countries as well, particularly in Europe, since Tunisia is the only country in this part of the world the star is scheduled to perform. No other concert is expected by the diva in Europe nor Africa. Ten years after Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey's performance in Tunisia, in front of an enraptured audience happy to see her sing for them, is the year's biggest musical event.
The star lived up to her reputation with her silken voice, both soft and strong (and estimated between five and seven octaves) and gave her all during this magical evening. The diva started the concert with one of her more recent hits "It's Like That" which" set fire to the stands and got the crowd to its feet, particularly the young people who knew the lyrics by heart.
She followed with both well known and lesser known songs from her rich and varied musical repertoire to convince us of her enormous vocal capabilities, her rare talent and her soft and upbeat melodies. The audience particularly enjoyed the hits "My All," "Hero," "We Belong Together," I Know What You Want," and above all the song that caused her international career to explode, "Without You."
The evening, peppered with R&B, soul, and club music, lasted nearly two hours. It was a true show of sound, lights, and dance, for the enjoyment of the diva's fans who have bought over 160 million of her albums worldwide.
It made a true "comeback" well received by the star who hasn't toured since 2003 and who is returning to the stage after the success of her album "The Emancipation of Mimi."
This night is the first of two concerts by Mariah at the Olympic Stadium of El Menzah in Tunis. It marks the start of her summer tour titled "The Adventures of Mimi" that the star launches in Tunisia and follows next in a number of cities in the US and Canada. A portion of the profits from these concerts will be donated to charity. Six times platinum "The Emancipation of Mimi" has sold over nine million copies worldwide, and the star was rewarded at the 2006 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles that gives awards to the musical artists.
From La Presse:
A true sanctuary for live shows, the stadium of El Menzah accomodated its second Mariah Carey concert on Monday the 24th, which launched "MC's" international tour after an absence that lasted three years. For this second show, Mariah Carey unleashed a series of vocal acrobatics, where the diva performed a "Best Of" compilation, for the most part choosing singles and remixes of her biggest hits from her fifteen albums.
An hour and a half of pure enjoyment, where one could appreciate this rare vocal talent, a soprano coloratura and her perfect mastery of the "whistle" register.
Can Mariah Carey attract a crowd despite the heat that enveloped the El Menzah Stadium? Oh yes, judging by this crowd that braved the heatwave and long hours of waiting to attend this last concert. Can you hear the clamor of the crowd? The show hasn't even begun! While waiting for the show to start, those in attendance let their imaginations run and walk in the footsteps of their idols, still taken by the memories from the unforgettable concerts by Michael Jackson or Sting. It's also a good time to stroll, reliving the stadium's best moments. Showtime creeps closer, as a voice announces that the show will start in five minutes. This announcement is perceived like a command by the crowd sprawled across the lawn, as they scramble one on top of each other for the best view, waving signs that read "I love you Mimi."
The lights go out, so the musicians can take their places onstage discreetly, but the exciting shouting of the fans can be still be heard. The screens are lit and the stadium is transformed into a constellation of stars. The night begins with the giant screens showing the view
from the top of a rollercoaster. It is immediately understood that the voyage that the audience embarks on will be one of dizzying heights and electrifying. Mariah makes her appearance in the midsts of a thundering ovation. She opens with "It's Like That," the first single from her album "The Emancipation of Mimi," her fourteenth album which saw worldwide success, selling over nine million copies. Like a ritual, the lyrics, the scenes from the videos, and the music cascade one behind another like in a dream. Next is "Heartbreaker," the remix version where the diva lets her voice roam freely over multiple octaves in front of a captivated crowd.
She follows with "Dreamlover" and "My All" before ceding the stage to her dancers who perform a series of dance routines. The artist returns to the stage with a warm welcome from the fans to perform "Honey," "Breakdown," and "Shake It Off." Mariah performed a variety of songs from her musical repertoire for this audience. The crowd is treated next to "Fly Like a Bird," "Fantasy," "Don't Forget About Us," and "I Know What You Want." The setlist for the second concert is practically the same as the first night. The loud cries continue to bounce off the walls of El Menzah while Mariah takes the time to change into a black dress.
She finishes the last part of the show with "Thank God I Found You," a remix that get the excitement and adrenaline pumping again. "One Sweet Day," "Hero," "Vision of Love," and "Make It Happen" make up the last part of the show. "I am happy to be with you, I love Tunisia, I love this great crowd" said the diva who has sold more than 160 million albums worldwide before leaving the stage. The crowd slowly leaves the arena, in a trance. The success of this night is a result of the high hopes of the people that were satisfied.
From Yahoo! France:
A golden voice and a toned body: American singer Mariah Carey performed for two concerts in Tunisia, marking her return to the international music scene after an absence of three years.
Under the slogan "Mimi in Tunisia," the New York native with 160 million albums sold worldwide gave two shows on July 22 and 24, attended by some 60,000 spectators at the Olympic Stadium of El Menzah in Tunis, lit up by thousands of lights.
Showing off her legs lasciviously, reminiscent sometimes of a cabaret, very much at ease despite the heat, Mimi gave a great show of songs from her biggest hits "Butterfly" and "The Emancipation of Mimi," her last album which sold over nine million copies.
"It's Like That," "My All," "Honey," followed by "Don't Forget About Us." "Dreamlover," "We Belong Together," and treated fans to "Shake It Off," "Breakdown," and "Fly Like a Bird."
With her strong and silken voice, alternating between romantic ballads and club bangers, the diva tooks breaks between songs to say "I love this crowd," or "How do you feel," "I love you Tunisia."
"She's fantastic!" was the opinion among concert-goers, some of whom attended both shows.
"Mini shorts and in great shape!" Said Francesco, 21, who came from Italy especially to see Mariah, referring to her "too sexy" outfit of micro shorts and a tiny top on Saturday. Monday night the diva performed in shorts and a bikini top, much to the enjoyment of the young Tunisians and fans from France, Italy, and Canada.
"It's fantastic! I never thought I would see her in flesh and blood," repeated Fatma, 17, from her perch in the stands.
Mariah "accomplished her return to the stage with success," said one radio personality, remembering that the diva had a rough patch in earlier years before renewing her success and racking up three Grammy Awards last February.
The star launched her tour for the first time in Africa, before heading to the US and Canada, and later Japan, under the slogan "The Adventures of Mimi."

I just returned from Tunisia, after seeing Mariah performing there yesterday. We arrived there at around 4.30pm .. and doors opened at 5pm. We waited for 5.5hours standing up, most of the time in the sun, as to not lose the good place we managed to secure by arriving early. We were really close to the stage .. like almost touching the metal barriers. It was amazing. We couldn't believe that we were actually seeing her live. She did a whole variety of songs, and it was just incredible. She started the show with It's Like That .. and ended it with We Belong Together and then Without You. She only did ILT, WBT, SIO, DFAU & FLAB from the Emancipation of Mimi, the rest were from her previous albums like My All, Make it happen, I'll be there (with Trey), she did parts of Make It Last Forever and One Sweet Day with Trey, Always Be My Baby, Dreamlover, Hero, Without you, Breakdown, Honey, Fantasy .. .I'm sure I'm forgetting more songs!!!
The stadium was packed with people .. it was such a wonderful experience.
I still can't believe that we saw her. I was kind of pissed, because on the tickets there was a sign that no cameras are allowed, so I left my digital camera at the hotel, and hid a disposable one in my sock LOL. I hope the pictures came out well. But I wanted to take some video clips!!!! Her voice was immaculate ... she was hitting high notes all the time ... but she was pissed because her stylist screwed up and she only had 2 outfits for the night. She was also very hungry ... probably she was not trusting the food there just like us ... because all we ate were donuts in the morning and fries for lunch and dinner LOL!!! She asked for more security upfront .. and sounded ironic when she asked for a mike stand .. because she was like .. Can I get a mike stand please? Or is that too much to ask for? Well being used to the American or European way just like us ... I do not blame her, because everything is so different there!
However, as I said .. it was the best experience of my entire life ... and so far I still can't believe that we were there .. watching her perform those amazing songs. Thank you MC for such a memorable show!!!

Hi guys!! I just came back from Tunisia 2 days ago and I have to say that was really a great experience!! We arrived in Tunis on July 19th, 2 hours after Mariah, because there was some problems with our plane in Milan... We missed Mariah's arrival by 2 hours. errrr!
On the next day we decided to look for Mariah around Tunis and some taxi driver said to us that she was in hotel around Gammarth.. but when we arrived .. no signs of Mariah!! So we enjoy the sun and the beach for awile.
After that we took another taxi to Tunis and went to the hotel where Mariah staff was. They were really nice especially our favourite bodyguard! He knows that!! They even invited us for a party that night. And they told us that Mariah wasn't in Tunis but in Hammamet, about 70km away from Tunis!
That night we decided to go to the stadium just to see and when we arrived we could "I Know What You Want." I was like Whoo! When we came to the front door, we tried to find some guy called "Ateff" to buy a ticket for one of our friends, and they just let us in! We were in the backstage, and meeting everyone - Trey, Mary Ann, Sadie, Rachel, the dancers... everyone!!! But again no signs of Mariah but they told us that tomorrow she would be there!
The day after we meet some fans from Holland in the stadium and we saw Mariah for the first time in Tunis! Outside we listened to her rehearsing "It's Like That," "Shake it Off" and "Breakdown."
After that we all gone to our hotel - just sleep and eat something.. Tomorrow will be the big day - the 1st concert of Mariah in Tunis!!!
The doors opened about the 6pm. We were there since 4:00pm. Now we are in the stadium full of people from Tunisia, Portugal, Holland, France...it was really great! About the concert. I think everyone knows what happen. But I do believe that she wanted to see more real fans, because not everyone knows her songs. The biggest hits in Tunisia were "I Know What You Want," "My All," "Hero" and "Without You."
After the concert, we went to the backstage once again and we met Mariah!!!! She was really sweet and nice to us. We touched her, we talked with her... what a night!!!
Now, we decided after the concert to try to go to Hammamet to meet her once again... and we went.. Her Hotel was really big, with nice beach. In the Hotel, we just saw the bodyguards, Mike and in the pool Mark Sudack. We saw Mariah too in her suite but we just didn't want to disturb her so we decided to wait outside the hotel when she gets out to eat. But no signs of Mariah once again! So we come back to Tunis.
Tomorrow the 2nd concert and we needed some sleep. Well the 2nd concert was smaller, and she looked a liltle bit pissed off with something but the concert was really cool, especially her entrance with the sunglasses. She looked really great! Once again, we went to the backstage to see Mariah. This time we had an opportunity to talk a little bit more, and she even told to us that she read what we wrote during the concert - things like "Portugal loves you" and "MC, you need to come to Europe"... and she read.. Mike even talk about Figo and Christiano Ronaldo. hehe!
After that we left Tunis for New York City. Someone told us that in February there are big chances of a tour in Europe!! So let's pray and cross fingers. Mariah left and we went to the stage to take some pictures and to her dressing room, really simple just with some glasses, water, and fritos - nothing like a big diva!
