From The Philadelphia Inquirer: Carey Can't Dance, But Sure Can Sing
Mariah Carey is a singer, not a dancer, which puts the mega-selling pop diva at an immediate disadvantage when it comes to mounting an arena-size spectacle like "The Adventures of Mimi" tour, which played to a not-quite-sold-out Wachovia Center on Friday.
Pop stars are expected to be buff, athletic entertainers leading phalanxes of gymnastic dancers as they tirelessly work oversize rooms, giving their all while simultaneously offering glimpses into their inner lives between song confessionals and videotaped interludes.
"The Adventures of Mimi" - the sobriquet comes from Carey's nickname, which also supplied the title of The Emancipation of Mimi, the best-selling album of 2005 - altered that strategy slightly.
Her stage presence is ungainly - she doesn't walk, much less dance, with grace - but Carey's famously frilly four-octave voice provided the athletic oh-wows, and she moved slowly about the stage in a series of hubba-hubba underwear and evening-gown ensembles, singing 16 years' worth of palliative pop and R&B and hip-hop-flavored hits.
Carey's string of successes is impressive: from 1990's "Vision of Love" to this year's hortatory "Fly Like a Bird," described as "so inspirational to me."
But hits are not enough to hold together a career-summarizing arena show. There must be a narrative arc. The thematic glue in this case, lamely proffered in a video voice-over intro, is how Carey's life is "like a rollercoaster," from her marriage and divorce to record exec Tommy Mottola to her emotional breakdown after the failure of 2001's Glitter to her triumphant return with Mimi.
Later, another clip displayed the night's one flash of wit, showing a group of fans dishing on Carey in front of a ladies-room mirror, questioning whether her breasts or even her legs ("I hear she's had them stretched") were real.
The 90-minute show was overly busy in its staging and choppily paced. But though Carey's singing is more noteworthy for its dexterity than its character, she connected with her intergenerational audience throughout, most engagingly in a series of duets with rappers (Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, the late, great Ol' Dirty Bastard) who joined her on video screens. She hit all the high notes, and did succeed in transforming the creamy ballad "We Belong Together" into a frighteningly intense declaration of obsessive love.
DJ Clue kept the crowd moving during costume changes, proving to be as skilled a crowd-pleaser as his boss as he spun snippets of Snoop Dogg and Salt 'n Pepa and exhorted the crowd to make some noise by demanding that "all the ugly people be quiet."

Mariah was amazing! She sounded so rested! The crowd was really receptive to all of the songs, and ESPECIALLY "Can't Let Go" L.A. Reid was in attendance tonight! I wonder if that made her work harder?
The setlist worked a lot better tonight, with songs like "Fly Like a Bird" going early, it just moved a lot better than some of the other shows.. big improvement.

It's early morning and I just got back about a half hour ago lol!!! All I can say is amazing and this is by far the best I've seen MC. She was on the ball with the high notes! She sang basically every song on the setlist including "Can't Let Go" and "We Belong Together"! She apologized for switching it around and not singing those at other shows.
I didn't expect her to come on that stage the way she did! She walked through the crowd sort of. I stayed after to try to see her but she supposedly ain't leaving till 4am. I did however see Michael, Darryl, Jack, and the dancers.
Mariah is at her BEST! To everyone who hasn't gone to their shows yet, I'm sure you'll have a great time. It was hot tamale! Also at this show, they had the Venus competition and a Mariah karaoke contest with her own personal drinks at the bar!

Mariah began her show a little after 9:00pm. She opened with "It's Like That." After the first few verses, we knew we had a slight problem. Mariah's voice was straining to hit the notes and she knew it. She sang in a lower register completing "Heartbreaker Remix" and "Dreamlover."
She recovered her voice a bit to give a sultry performance of "My All." After a brief intermission, she performed a remix version of "Honey" with cameo appearance by Mase via video. Due to her vocal distress, Mariah opted not to sing "Stay The Night." She did unleash one vocal explosion, "Fly Like A Bird" - it was incredible! Mariah's voice swayed over the music and for the first and only time, she amazed each and every one in the capacity-filled arena. Even the nosebleed section which was packed, were church-waving.
She performed "Vision of Love" for the first time. Due to vocal issues, she did not sing the straight powerful notes, she broke them up.
Mariah and Trey did an extended verison of the remix to "Thank God I Found You." This time they sang a little more than what has been done in other cities. They performed the same version of "One Sweet Day." Mariah and her entourage moved to the center stage, performing a workman-like version of "Fantasy," "Don't Forget About Us" and "Always Be My Baby." Her voice recovered some to give honest performances of these cuts. "I Wish You Knew" was performed ala a snippet, and "Can't Let Go" also. Hero was performed like the other shows. "Make it Happen" is where it ALL fell apart. For the first time, Mariah attempted to hit a note and her voice cracked... and the audience gasped. "Make It Happen" was a trainwreck. I felt horrible for Mariah. She called it a night and performed a beautifully sung version of "We Belong Together." Mariah's voice was not what I've heard in Atlanta or Florida. If this tour is about voice, Mariah needs to come back to Philly to reclaim her throne. I overhead a lady say as we were leaving, "Did she leave her voice back in Atlanta?"

Mariah left me mesmerized by last night's show. When she came up to sing in the middle stage. I was right next to it. I couldn't believe that I was that close to my favorite artist of all time. I felt like I owed her when the show was over. It makes me wanna cry the fact that she sung right to me. The whole show was a dream. It was so hot! She was beautiful! The DJ kept it popping while she was changing outfits. It was like we were at a club. I bought up so much merchandise. That program is the best I've seen. The pictures and the things she said in it. The whole night. I just can't get over it.

Her show last night was AWESOME! I have seen Mariah 4 times in concert and I must say "The Adventures of Mimi' was by far the best show!
I think she really made a smart choice by having a DJ there live to spin while she changed outfits! This kept everyone on their feet all night along, which has not happened at any of the other shows I have been to.
Her voice was on point last night! She sounded great! She brought me to tears when she sang "Fly Like A Bird!" If you have not gotten tickets, GET THEM! I want to see the show again!!! It was well worth the money and the trip ( I drove from Maryland!!!)

I was at the concert too last night at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. It was the best concert I've ever been to. I love Mariah. I was by the small stage in the middle. She walked right by me. It was awesome!!!! I loved every minute of the concert. When she got off the stage she smiled at us and shook my hand. It was AWESOME!!!! When it was over I didn't want to leave. I could have stayed all night listening to her. GREAT CONCERT!!!!! Very Happy!!

August 11, 2006: Philadelphia, PA. The Wachovia Center. Mariah sang: It's Like That, Heartbreaker, Dreamlover, My All, Honey, Vision of Love (her first single), Fly Like A Bird (It was amazing), I'll Be There with the incredible Trey Lorenz, his new album "Mr. Mista: Mimi Presents Trey Lorenz" hits stores September 19, 2006 They sang so well together, as always!).
Mariah then ventured into the crowd and went to the "B" stage, a platform set up in the middle and sang Fantasy featuring ODB. It is unreal live!!!, Don't Forget About Us, Always Be My Baby.
She ventured back to the main stage. She sang a small piece of I Wish You Knew, Can't Let Go, Thank God I Found You/Make It Last with Trey again!!!, and the incredible One Sweet Day (a duet with Boyz II Men), MC sang it again with Trey! She then sang Hero and spoke to the crowd during the show. She spoke of a wardrobe malfunction, asked if we liked her shoes!
She also sang Make It Happen which is incredible live and she sang and sang. In fact on the way into Philly, my mom said, 'I can hear her singing already.' We thought we were going to "fashionably late" but we made it on time. She ended the show with We Belong Together and went into the Butterfly reprise. We got there like right at 8, got in and then walked around looking for the seats, Sean Paul was already performing when we got there. He is good and kept the crowd hyped up! Mariah's voice was amazing. I believe this was the first time I heard Can't Let Go live so that was cool. Philly was the first place I saw MC along with Trey on Dec. 2, 1993. During the "Music Box" Tour. Have fun at all the concerts to those who have not yet gotten to their Adventure.

I wasn't planning on writing a review, but when I saw that people were saying Mariah's voice wasn't up to par, I had to defend her. After the rollercoaster video was done and "It's Like That" started, it was clear to most people that the problem was in her headset because after a quick adjustment her voice was much better. The "problem" that others spoke of is most definitely non-existent. I even found my ears ringing as she hit all of her high notes perfectly.
Mariah's "Fly Like a Bird" performance was nothing short of amazing. Every note was hit perfectly and the high notes at the end were dead on. I'm not sure why some people believe she changed her register, but I found that to also be untrue, as I was with a friend who's a music major.
"Vision of Love" was also a noteworthy performance. It's always interesting to see how such an old song sounds 16 years later, but as she sang it, it took me back to Arsenio Hall - back in the day when she first sang it on TV. It was wonderful.
The musical chemistry between Mariah and Trey was fantastic. They both complement each other's style to the fullest degree and it was great. Although I did feel bad when Trey sang his first single from his new CD because a lot of people got up and left for the bathrooms and concession stands.
The "B" stage performances were also terrific. She hit every note and I was surprised to see her hold the last note in "Don't Forget About Us." It reminded me of last year's AMAs when she had the technical problems and had to sing the song without the music in her ear. Also, at one point Mariah took a quick break to sign a couple autographs with permission of the security guards of course. The crowd was very much into "Always Be My Baby." Even my friend, who doesn't like Mariah as much as I do, got out of his seat to sing along.
The snippets of songs was another highlight of the night. She sometimes sang without any music, which is a sign of a true artist. Next came "Make it Happen." Even though some make it seem a little dramatic, her voice simply cracked one time (no big deal, I mean she can't be perfect 100% of the time), but she simply recovered and finished the songs, with some powerful notes at the end.
"We Belong Together" was the crowd favorite. Almost everyone sang and it was a little hard to hear her voice because of the huge amount of people in the arena. Overall, the Philly show will definitely go down in history as one of her best shows. Her notes made the crowd roar because the Philly energy is truly unique.
Other Side notes:
1. The videos are funny. The crowd was laughing and getting into it. They also weren't long, so for future concert goers don't worry about that.
2. The DJ during Mariah's dress changes was amazing. He got a bigger crowd response than Sean Paul. The beats were great and he got everyone ready for Mariah once again.
3. It was definitely a sellout. I only saw the occasional 2 or 3 seats that weren't taken.

Mariah did an amazing job last night. She really blew me away. It was my first Mariah concert and I can't wait to go to another one. Her voice sounded amazing and she was looking so good. She sang all of my favorite songs and she did a great job of including the audience. She had me on my feet the whole time. Seeing Mariah live was an unreal experience. When she hit those high notes (which she did every time) it took me to another world. I drove all the way from Maryland to see MC, and it was worth every minute! If you don't have tickets.... GET THEM NOW! Sean Paul also did a great job of opening the show.
By Ruaqtim12:
Last night's concert was amazing! Mariah's body is so tight and her voice was more flawless than I've ever heard it! I've been in the audience for multiple Mariah shows/tours (Homecoming Special, Rainbow Tour, Charmbracelet Tour twice, Mimi Tour once and soon to be twice).
Anyway, the Philly show was kinda special because it was the first show where Mariah sang Vision of Love. I read everyone else's comments on here about how she did not sing it on the tour so I was a little disappointed. When the music started for the song about halfway through the show, I looked at my sis in disbelief and said, "OMG that's Vision of Love!!! She wasn't supposed to sing that on this tour!"
Mariah even hit a high note in the bridge to the song. I don't think she's done that in years when singing VOL! After performing it, she even commented how Philly is the first show on the tour where she sang it - so rest assured - very other show from yesterday on will probably feature it.
In addition, we got to see how cute Mariah was last night because she joked and teased a lot. Something very odd about the show happened. During It's Like That, when Mariah first came out on stage it was very dark. At the first words of It's Like That, the lighting guy is supposed to turn on the spotlight and light Mariah up, she got to about the 3rd line of the song and looked up and said something to the effect of, "You might want to turn the lights on doll. I am in the middle of a song here!" and then she laughed...BIG DUH on the lighting guy's part!!!! But it was cute!
Even though I've seen the woman perform so many times live and met her 5 times, she still puts me in awe every single time I'm in her presence.

I just wanted to send you guys my thoughts on the concert to share with everyone. I was lucky enough to attend the concert on August 11th in Philly which is my hometown so you can imagine how excited I was, especially since Mariah hasn't been to Pphilly in a long time! She blew me away with every song she sang. Her voice sounded flawless and she looked gorgeous. It was so much fun and the energy from the audience gave me the chills. I could tell that there were some true Mariah fans amongst me. Mariah is amazing, and I don't think that anyone could top that show off!
By jettajen:
Mariah was unbelievable! We were never so close to her in our lives! She was only a few feet away. Mariah looked right at me as we sang the words to "It's Like That" together. It was better than I could have ever imagined! A true life long memory. Mariah will always be #1. I wish she would have sung "Stay The Night" but I know she was having trouble with her voice. Nevertheless she was awesome. Wish we could have taken pics but security was right in front of us all night. Hope they come out with a live DVD!I know how lucky me and my husband were to have these seats, everyone kept saying to us: "Lucky people." But on a sad note, I wonder if those were tears of happiness or sadness that Mariah kept wiping away all night?
Wish I could go to another show! Mariah was GREAT and will always be GREAT!! CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT TOUR!!
