Ok, here goes my cherished recollection of my very FIRST and the BEST Mariah Concert I’ve ever been to in my whole life!!!!!!!! This AWESOME concert was held at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre here in Orlando, Florida, last Saturday…August 30th, 2003!
The concert started at 8:15 PM, and OMG!!! suddenly Mariah came out from the left side of the theatre singing “Hearbreaker” Remix!!! I was sooo in in AWE, EXCITED, NERVOUS, HAPPY, and just couldn’t believe that I am there finally hearing Mariah sing LIVE in person!!! Her voice was sooo FULL, STRONG, and just sooo AMAZING!!!!!! I could see her clearly from where I’m sitting. I immediately took out my disposable cameras and took some pics. Others were already taking pics of Mariah…and flashes were everywhere, lol! I don’t think anyone got there cameras taken away, but still we were careful of taking pics…since the ushers were looking in, lol! After a while, I didn’t care, I kept taking lots of pics of Mariah’s different outfit changes (hope they turn out well, lol!)…
Anyways, the next song she sang was “Clown.” I don’t remember the order of the Song Set List…but I believe it was the same as the other cities. She sang “My All,” changed clothes, came back and then sang “Dreamlover,” and so on. I’m not gonna review every song, but she sounded just great on all of them. The entire concert was about 2 hours long and Mariah just simply AMAZED and IMPRESSED all of us at the audience with her BEAUTIFUL voice (surely, no one compares to her amazing vocal abilities! She was INCREDIBLE!!!) Her back-up singers such as Trey Lorenz, Teka, and Tatum Tots were equally AMAZING with their vocal abilities in their own soulful numbers. The audience were totally impressed!!! Likewise with the entire BAND…I love the long guitar break on BOTH…There were so many GREAT MOMENTS on the show.
Heck the entire show was just SIMPLY AMAZING!!! To quote the title of the Orlando Sentinel’s rave review of Mariah’s concert… “Mariah Carey delivers an impressive musical variety show.” She sure did and I totally agree!!! Her interaction with all of us at audience was just great! The Orlando crowd just showed so much love to Mariah and she gave back an AMAZING performance after another. My favorite moments were when some fans at the back were screaming loud, “Mariah we love you!!!” and Mariah said “I love you too!” The audience just cheered and clapped so many times. Another was when she sent out lots of beach balls to the crowd dedicating “Always Be My Baby” to a couple with a “Just Married!” sign (I thought that was cute how she noticed their sign)…
Another is when she sang “Subtle Invitation” (which is one of my fav. songs on CB), we were wondering where Mariah was…but she was on a swing that dropped down from the ceiling wearing a beautiful white ensemble!!! She looked so GORGEOUS and sounded AMAZING!!! And my MOST FAVORITE moment of all her performances was when she did the BAND INTRO in a very creative, impressive, sophisticated sing-song jazzy vocal style. Wow, that was just refreshing and so wonderful to listen to (she better released a Tour DVD and LIVE CD with that part included! lol)…Again, the audience were just impressed and amazed!!!
She was hilarious too esp. when she sang/introduced one of her back-up singers, whom she said has a boyfriend (or was he the husband? can’t remember exactly) with a “Wondering Eye.” lmao! That was a classic moment, everyone at the audience just laugh!!! When everyone thought it was over (since Mariah and her band started saying “Thank You Orlando!” and the lights when out, the theatre went dark for a second there, lol!), Mariah came back wearing an elegant dress and sang VOL, then, she followed that with “HERO”, and ended the BEST show with “Butterfly (flyway Reprise).” Again, she said (not her exact quote) right at the middle of singing the last song, “Thank You Orlando and everybody for coming. And for being with me through out the show…you are all just so wonderful to me!” I think she also said that she’d like to come back to Orlando or something of that sort…Then, she left the stage! The crowd just went WILD and just kept screaming LOUD, “WE WANT MORE!!! WE WANT MORE!!!” Of course, Mariah didn’t comeback…that was indeed the END of THE MOST AMAZING Concert I’ve ever been to!!!! Wow, it was like I was in a DREAM the whole show (and when it was over it was hard to believe it was already!)

August 30, 2003—Mariah Carey at the Bob Car Performing Arts Center: Orlando, Florida
With so much standing on the turnout of Mariah Carey’s first worldwide jaunt in three years, an evening with Billboard’s-darling of the 90s proves both intimate and charming, indeed…
Exuding both a surprising (and intoxicating) sense of self-confidence as well as deprecation that many say she lacked in her earlier years of touring, Miss M knocks one out of the proverbial chanteuse’s “ballpark” at Saturday’s concert in Orlando, Florida at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center. Singing, smiling, squeezing every inch of her enviably taut, tanned figure into haute couture and hot pants alike, and showcasing poignant, pensive songwriting talents (often overlooked by mainstream critics), were her M.O. for moving the packed crowd to its feet many times throughout the 1 hour and 40 minute show.
Ushering in a new take on an old (heavily-clichéd) dance-sing-dance routine, Mariah & Company transformed a theatre in the middle of bustling Orlando into a small, off-Broadway cabaret-style-meets-Moulin Rouge world. Burnished lighting, hilarious circus-themed Eminem banter (in the aptly-titled “Marionette Show” facet of Carey’s thinly-veiled, yet telling “Clown” number), and dramatic feathered Roberto Cavalli-gowns created, if you can believe, entertainment that was energetic, still appropriate.
Yet, the eclectic sets, silly “Mariahisms,” and props aside, the concert centered on more…
What MC’s enthusiastic, sometimes dogmatically loyal fans (re: “lambs”) will attest her longevity to—as well as relevance in an ever-fickle music market—has little to do with her “ensemble” changes, the much-maligned Glitter fiasco, or scathing, scintillating, or salacious rumors. Instead, they’ll chime in unison, it lies in her songs and most notably, her instrument. Her vibrato. Her “runs.” Her timbre. Mariah Carey has remained a fixture in popular music, because, succinctly put, the girl can sing. No, make that s-ang.
While some nay-sayers have recently questioned the purportedly-waning power of the original vocal acrobat’s range, where Carey’s Charmbracelet album re-secured her niche in music’s vocal pantheon of greats, the “Intimate Evening” tour ascends her to the stratosphere of the few who can scoop you up in a song you’ve hummed a thousand times before, or lure you into one you may have not heard once. Oh, and lest you forget, this is all live.
No purring aloud here, one could sub-title her concerts: “She comes. She s-angs. She conquers.”
Singing in a gorgeous, multi-layered tenor of control that so many have eschewed—or abandoned altogether—in today’s MTV culture, Mariah Carey led a set filled with familiar favorites, motivational ballads, and jazzy, gospel, and hip-hop influenced jems from the early 90s throughout today without seeming dated, pretentious, or fatigued.
What’s more, mid-way through the concert, Carey unabashedly shuns her “diva” epithets to—gasp!—dollop credit (praise, even!) to her crew, and introduces her impressive band and varied back-up singers. Where The Enquirer would post a story of the inability of those employed by the star to make eye contact, Mariah not only knows the names of her posse, she playfully joshes during the intermission of songs. Making this scene even more interesting is Mariah Carey’s jazz influences, as shown in her sunny repartee and sing-song chit-chat with those onstage alongside her. A standout few minutes of improv (as well as a rare showcasing of her lower , Aretha-esque register) prove all detractors wrong: Mariah Carey, the aloof, frigid “protégé” of Tommy Motolla, can stand on her own, sing on her own, and most impressively, communicate personality and relate to her audience…on her own. No wonder they call her “honey!”
Great energy can bring anyone to their feet, as a concert by the lip-syncing crowd of Britney Spears or even Madonna illustrates—but rare silence in a crowd of thousands to hear every last peak and valley a song may yield, or in Mariah’s case, a voice may lend, is the real testament to talent and showmanship.
Sitting, watching, soaking up the lyrics to songs of yearning (a soulful, simmering “My All”), loss (“Bringin’ on the Heartbreak”—a breathtaking, bombastic take on the Def Leppard original), first loves (a paired-down, emotive rendition of “I’ll Be There” with the uber-talented Trey Lorenz), and inner strength and perseverance (“Through the Rain,” “My Saving Grace”), one couldn’t help but being swept in the moment.
“The moment” of Mariah Carey, contrary to popular belief, has less to do with a laundry-list of high-maintenance demands and 25 handlers tending to your every wanton desire, and more to do with, just that—the moment.
If one evening with Mariah Carey teaches us anything, it is that there is no excuse for not seizing your dream, “making it happen,” finding your inner “hero,” and so forth. However, where many, especially MC’s peers, find themselves losing ground (Celine), or grip (Whitney) by belting out hollow interpretations of Diane Warren penned-power ballads, Mariah Carey doesn’t falter. When she stands erect in front of a cleared staged at a solitary microphone for her final encore of the night to sing “Hero,” you get it, and “the moment” becomes reality: She has lived it, she has written it, and now, you are lucky enough to sit before her and listen as she croons all about it. “The highs and the lows. The ins and the outs. The ups and the downs. The dramas and the whatever’s” to quote the woman herself.
For such a survivor, one who climbed back up out of what many said would be her own ashy demise, gracious Mariah can definitely “make it through the rain,” trite as it may sound, and so can we—and listening to her unparalleled voice s-ang all about it is nothing short of astonishing…and inspiring.

Mariah Carey delivers an impressive musical variety show
Mariah Carey proved that she can still sing like she used to, with a glitzy Vegas-style show and catchy new alternative rock and rap-influenced songs used in her act at Carr Performing Arts Centre Saturday night.
Lighting effects, themed videos and eclectically costumed dancers galore turned the 33-year-old New York-born singer's Charmbracelet tour into an impressive musical variety act. Carey maneuvered her elastic voice easily from full-out belting to breathy, super-high-pitched trills soaring through octaves far above the average person's range.
The mostly middle-aged audience and the fact that Carey didn't sell out the Carr, a small venue compared with places she has playedbefore, could suggest a decline, but she still put on a fun, theatrical, music experience for her followers.
A few performance elements seemed a little random, such as a marionette circus pantomime and an artist-mime who displayed various paintings every so often. For the most part, though, Carey and her talented musicians were the focus. Synthesized sound occasionally overpowered the guitars, but Carey's voice always rang out loud and clear. Her four backup singers revealed their equally tremendous vocal abilities in their own soulful number.
Carey covered a range of songs from her nine albums, although most of the repertoire came from her more popular earlier work such as "Vision of Love," from her 1990 self-titled debut and "Dreamlover" from Music Box (1993). She performed sentimental ballads while lounging on sofas, a grand piano and even a swing that dropped down from the ceiling, and introduced the band in a creative sing-song jazz improvisational style.
Her interactions with the audience -- singing back to their cries of adoration, sending out beach balls and dedicating "Always Be My Baby," to a couple with a "Just Married" sign -- added a cute personal touch to the show. The newer songs provided nice interludes to her traditional pop, such as her part in Busta Rhymes' "I Know What You Want" which she performed along with the music video. Other crowd favorites included "Fantasy," from Daydream (1995) and "Honey" from Butterfly (1997).
She topped off her two-hour set with the exuberant "Make It Happen," from Emotions (1991) and "Hero" from Music Box.
Almost everything on stage had a feminine touch, which fit Carey's persona (although the butterfly symbols everywhere were a bit excessive.) It was strange to see the drums, keyboard and guitars spaced so far apart. But Carey filled up the central aisle, going through a fashion show of at least seven outfits. With the exception of a couple of ensembles such as a short glittery pink thing reminiscent of a trapeze-artist leotard, she looked classy in elegant dresses.
Apparently, diminishing crowds haven't dampened Carey's prima donna ego, though. Besides making a show of having water brought to her onstage, which she sipped delicately through a straw, a video homage to Carey that included photos from her childhood played while she sang "Saving Grace."
"Just a little primping, you know," she said, when attendants rushed up to fiddle with her mike and offer another drink.

At 10:15 PM, after the BEST show ended, all of us M&G winners and others (who had backstage passes as well) waited for the M&G backstage event to begin. Mariah’s MonarC staff told us to wait and sit at the first few rows by the stage of the small theatre. OMG! there were so many of us than I thought.
While we waited, we watched the crew clean up their equipment. Also, I met Gerald (Gerald4Mariah) a HBF M&G winner, with his girlfriend…I think her name’s Krystal? I’m not sure, lol! We’ve talked and I showed him our Orlando FanBook. Then, behind where we were sitting, I heard someone called my name (and 2 or 3 others saying “Jeane!!! Is that you?” at that moment, felt famous, lol!) and I looked back, and I saw and met Chris and his girlfriend (they were so nice and great to talk to!!!), Andy (HeroLamb) which I loved his shirt with a “Hero Lamb” logo on it, and Amy (imagineer), it was so fun meeting and talking with her, she was a couple seats back…as well as Lora (I loved her decorated HBF shirt!!!) There I was looking for Lyn also (‘cause I heard that she got an extra backstage pass as well), sadly, I didn’t see her. :- (…
Anyway, Chris, Andy, and Amy all wanted to see what our FanBook looked like…and when I showed it to them, they told me that they LOVED IT!!! which I’m very glad ‘cause it’s our book, and they contributed to it with their GREAT entries. Then, finally, when it was almost 11 PM, we were told to form in 2 groups and get in line(all of us, HBF M&G winners!!!)…Me and my guest were in Group 2 (I was #11 and she was #12)…
The staff told us to walk backstage and when we got there…there was this white curtain on the other side of the room (which the M&G photo with Mariah was to be held), and a table (with snacks and beverages) with some chairs on the other side.“OMG!!!” I started to get nervous and thought to myself “This is the moment I’ve been waiting for, for 13 years!!! I can’t believe I am finally here and I’m going to meet Mariah!!!”
We sat down and I got to met Amy, Lora, Andy, Chris and his girlfriend, and Gerald and his girlfriend too, once again…and many others too (the backstage room was just freakin crowded, lol!)…We waited for an hour or so for Mariah to come out…but the time didn’t seem to bore us waiting for her to come out, since we were busy chatting with each other, lol…Then suddenly, Mariah’s back-up singers, Trey and Teka appeared and fans were asking them to take a pic with them and sign their MC items, etc.
I didn’t noticed Trey till Chris had his pic taken with him. I was like, “OMG! he looks like Trey Lorenz!!!” and when he looked around, it sure was Trey, lol! So, I asked him if I could get a pic with him…and he said “yes!” and he put his arm around my shoulder and my guest took a pic of us. I also asked him if he could sign my tour book, and he did (he wrote with my full name on it, “To Jeanette, love Trey Lorenz” in cursive writing, of course!).
I told him that I made a Fan Book for Mariah and showed it to him. He said, “Wow, that is so cute!!! Mariah will LOVE it!!!” I said, “Thanks, I sure hope so and please make sure that Mariah reads all of it? this is from her Hard core fans at her Fan Club…” And he said, “Oh, don’t worry, you’re going to be able to give it to her yourself.” I said, “I know, but be sure to tell her to read it when you see her.” LOL! He said, “Ok!” Then, I saw Teka (another back-up singer), I wanted to get a pic with her and an autograph as well, but she was so busy with other Lambs asking her…So, I talked to Lora and Amy about the Fan Book again (since they wanted to see it, esp. Lora…she didn’t get to see it!)
Then, I met Stephanie (musicbox93) and we hugged for a moment (she asked to see the FanBook too!) The next thing I know, Christopher Buckle (Mariah’s make up artist) appeared in the room. So, I yelled at him, “Christopher, can I get a pic with you?” and he said, “sure!” so I asked Stephanie (who was sitting in front of us) to take a snapshot if she didn’t mind (and kind and sweet that she was) she took our pic…and Christopher was like “Whoa! that was too close!!!” when we got our pic taken, lol! I was saying to him, “I know, our eyes will probably be closed when the picture is developed.” Lmao! He laughed and left…several minutes had passed and still waiting for MC…I even ate a lil’ bit of those snacks, but wasn’t much into it (even though I was hungry) since I had been enjoying talking with other HBF Lambs…I was talking to Chris and his girlfriend next to the curtain, and quickly sneaked out to see if Mariah was there…but no one was there yet…Then, I glimpsed again (to my curiousity) to see if she’s there…and there she was talking to somebody.
I couldn’t believe what I’m seeing…I was telling Chris, “OMG!!! look by the curtain, Mariah’s there!!!!” Chris and his gf did! And then, one of Mariah’s popular bodyguards told us, “keep it on a down low (or something) and you’ll have your turn.” We’re like “ok, sorry!” lol!!!! Mariah just looked beautiful even from that distance!!! Her staff finally started telling us to form in line. Group 1 (which I believe were Lora, Andy, Gerald and his gf, Stephanie and others)…and finally, our Group 2 followed (with me, Amy, Chris, keely, and our guests…) and when we walked to get our group photo….I couldn’t believe I was walking towards Mariah and looking at her at the same time!!! She was wearing this cute pink top and very short, short blue jeans…She looked just BEAUTIFUL!!! Much more gorgeous in person…She looked slim and very sexy and quite attractive (and I’m a straight girl, lol), her figure was FLAWLESS!!! She looked like a Barbie Doll!!! She was standing and waiting for our group photo. As I was walking, I looked at her…then, she gave me and others behind me a BIG SMILE!!! She looked relaxed and happy!!! We then, took our photo (I told the others make sure that Mariah’s standing in the front middle, not hiding in the back and barely seen…like the LA M&G photos, lol!) After we got our photo taken, I think, I got to talk to Mariah first. I told her about the Fanbook and handed it to her. She looked at it, and looked at me and said, “Aww, this is so CUTE!!!” I said, “Thanks!” and I believe I went on and said “Mariah, I hope you’ll love this ‘cause this book came from your hard core fans from the HBF Fan Club!” and she then, looked at me, nodded and smiled (which I’ll never ever forget). The next thing I know, her staff took the fanbook away from her and then, I asked her to sign my HBF shirt…so, I gave her my black marker (I remember Chris asked me if he can borrow it, since he said he left his at the car). When Mariah started signing, I began to spell my full name…I was like,
“J -E- A -N - E -T-T…” and then, I almost forgot to tell her there’s an “E” at the end of my name, lol (I mean, come on, I’m standing in front of Mariah face to face and talking to her, I felt like I was in a dream, it was surreal!!!)…but Mariah was so SWEET….
She waited till I told her there was an “E” and wrote it…then, she draw a lil’ heart shaped and wrote her beautiful name Mariah (in cursive, of course!)…and right after she signed my HBF shirt, I don’t remember if I was able to touched her or said “Thank You” or not, lol…it happened so fast…the next thing I know the security was telling me “Maam, this way please!” lol.…The security guards here weren’t rude though, they were respectful.
As I was leaving Mariah, I kept looking at her…she then, went on to the others and signed their stuff. I waited from a lil’ distance, and I saw that my Sis-In-Law had my tourbook signed by Mariah (she wrote “Love! Mariah”…but I don’t know if she noticed that it’s the same page that Trey signed my name, lol), so I got 2 items signed by Mariah (that was nice of my Sis-In-Law to helped me out!)
Again, for the last time, just before the security ushered us to exit the building…I looked at Mariah again, and I just realized that she still have my black marker in her hands!!! She’s been using it to sign others’ stuff, lol. All I had left with it was the top lid…I was thinking, she can have it, lol! And we were ushered out the building. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to have a personal photo with her, but I’m fortunate enough to have met her in person, talked with her, had a group photo with her, and had my HBF and tourbook signed by her. :-)…That’s way more than I could asked for!!! THANK YOU MARIAH!!! You were SIMPLY THE BEST!!!!
I only wished I got to hug her too (‘cause Chris and Andy told me they did!) When our group left the building, and we were outside, we chatted a lil’ bit about our M&G experience with Mariah…and then, we decided to get our pic together. The security even helped us out, since we were on the way (the trucks were leaving, and we were in front of it taking pics, lol!) After we got our pics, we said our goodbyes!!! :- (…As we were leaving in our separate ways, I met Wylon again (the guy who was sitting next to me at the concert) and we talked a bit…then, as we were leaving the building, we noticed that there were crowds at the other end of the building… I asked Wylon, “why are there so many people waiting?” He said, “they are waiting for Mariah to come out to her limo!” I was like “really?!?!” so, I waited too, to get another glimpse of Mariah, and maybe I could get snapshot of her heading to her limo. The security kept telling us to move ‘cause once MC gets in to the limo, the limo will leave immediately. We waited for about 5-10 min. then, Mariah came out from the building’s back door, which she smiled and waived at the crowd screaming and chanting “Mariah! Mariah!” and everyone was flashing their cameras as she walked and waived to the crowd. I tried to get a snapshot (and I don’t know if it turn out well), but Mariah quickly got inside the car with her bodyguards and the limo left. She didn’t open her window, but I can understand, since she’s probably already tired ‘cause of the show and it was already past midnight by the time she left. So, I was fortunate yet again, to be able to see her for the very last time, got into her limo and leave that night. After she was gone, (which I couldn’t believe it’s already over!!!) we left too and went back to the hotel we were staying in for the night. I finally went to my room at 12:30 AM…and that’s THE END! of the BEST night of my life!!!!
PS>>> I would like to give a shout outs and a BIGGEST THANK YOU!!! to Lyn (for making this happen for me…without you, I wouldn’t have met Mariah in person. Thank You so much!!!), a special thanks to MonarC Rob and the entire MonarC staff…and last but most certainly not least A BIG THANKS to Mariah for coming to Orlando and for her AMAZING and UNFORGETTABLE performances of that night. Meeting her was so GREAT and probably a once in a lifetime opportunity for me. I had a BLAST and the BEST of time at the concert!!!
