Mariah Carey makes her first appearance on Billboard's Hot Rap Tracks chart as "I Know What You Want" (J/MonarC) enters at No. 16. The song is credited to Busta Rhymes & Mariah Carey featuring the Flipmode Squad.

On the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks tally, "I Know What You Want" leaps 38-27. That's Carey's highest position since "Loverboy" went to No. 1 in August 2001.

"I Know What You Want" earns Hot Shot Debut honors on the Hot 100, where it opens at No. 57. It's also the highest-ranking Carey song on this chart since "Loverboy," which peaked at No. 2 in August 2001.

Actually just for a change this is an example of Eurotrance finally getting it right. Someday began life as a Mariah Carey song, appearing on her debut album. It was her third single here and charted in early 1991 in a dramatically remixed version after it had become clear that (at that time) Britain was failing to get to grips with the idea of this hot new American star. Despite heavy promotion the single crashed out at Number 38 and effectively derailed her career in this country for 18 months. Resonance Q actually turn the song into the club stormer it always should have been, bringing out the soul of the song rather than destroying it and proving that not all cover versions are lesser recordings than the original. Oh don't worry, I'm not going soft - there is worse to come.

Mariah Miracle
Mariah Carey made it "through the rain", and in December she made a chronically ill fan's wish come true. Caleb Boulter, 16, of North Conway, N.H. got to meet his idol. A short time later, he suffered a terrible setback. Now, Mariah talks to Access Hollywood about what happened, and how she helped Caleb "make it through."

"Mariah Carey is the best, greatest, most incredible, sincere singer that the world can imagine," said Caleb. But just hours after their meeting, he nearly died after suffering a severe seizure on the plane ride home. "Probably the reason why that seizure occurred was due to all the excitement of meeting Mariah Carey and going to the concert," claims Caleb.

That elation, coupled with severe turbulence, apparently set off the seizure, a symptom that, along with chronic kidney disease, Caleb often suffers from. His parents, Chris and Al, told Access that "Quickly it rose into a major seizure, Caleb was jerking wildly, out of control."

Caleb miraculously survived. When Mariah heard the news, she sent flowers and a note that said: "Dear Caleb, I hope you feel better soon. God bless and get well soon."

Caleb feels an incredible connection to Mariah's music, especially the song "Hero", which lifted him out of a dark time in his life. "It just helped me dig deep inside and realize that despite being a little different from the general population, I can still be a special person," said Caleb. "It gave him the extra oomph he needed to deal with the different issues in his life," added his parents.

Caleb was speechless when Access delivered one more special surprise from Mariah -- a videotaped message: "We love you Caleb, you're amazing, you're an incredible person, keep going."

Q: What do you draw out of each artist when you're working with them?

A:It starts with inspiration, because we are songwriters and producers. The song has to be inspired from somewhere. We generally let the artist inspire the song and the direction that we go. Most artists would say, "Just produce whatever you all want to do." Nowadays, artists have a very clear-cut sense of what they'd like to talk about lyrically--the way they'd like their music to sound. Also, because now we have a pretty vast catalog, a lot of times artists will come with specific songs and say, "Do you guys remember when you did this song...?"

Mariah [Carey] is somebody who's like that. For instance, she will come to us and say, "Remember when you guys did 'Bended Knee'? Remember that one chord change there," or, "That one piano change there?" Or, "Maybe we can combine that with a little bit of something like you did." Artists now do that, where they'll go, "You know, I loved that song back in the day and if you guys could do this," etc.

HANGING out with Prince is a sobering experience. When the fuschia-loving funkster showed up at Rehab the other night, the club's owner sent over several magnums of Veuve Clicquot. Prince - a non-drinker - refused the bubbly not only for himself, but for the 50 pals he'd brought with him. After he insisted all alcohol be removed from their tables, the whole crew drank bottled water. Mariah Gets Back into Acting Ring

... She has signed to star in the pugilism drama Sweet Science, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Carey will play a strong-willed manager who recruits a young female boxer to take the not-so-glamorous boxing world by storm.

The project would reteam Carey with Anthony Esposito, the producer of her yet-to-be-released second flick, Wisegirls.

"I had such a great experience with Mariah Carey on Wisegirls that I wanted to make another film with her," Esposito gushes to the Hollywood Reporter. "Her performance in Wisegirls is outstanding...I feel [that] given the right role, the depth of Mariah's performance will make everyone take notice of her great acting ability."

Mariah's Next Movie: Not So Fast
A lot of press announcements came out this week regarding Mariah Carey's next movie deal. Producer Anthony Esposito told the willing and waiting wire services that Mariah would star in a new movie called Sweet Science, and play a boxing coach.

But hold it, say Carey insiders.

Apparently Esposito, who was the man behind Carey's Wisegirls, decided to make his announcement independent of having a deal, a signed contract, or even a distributor for Wisegirls. That's right. He's so busy getting ready to make a new movie that Esposito apparently still hasn't found someone to take on the one he's got in the can.

I will say that Esposito did tell me at Sundance he fully expected to make another movie with Mariah. He's been planning Sweet Science for some time.

But Carey has not agreed to anything. In fact, I doubt she will until she and her management sees how Esposito fares with placing Wisegirls.

Mariah Carey — whose recent Sundance Film Festival selection, "Wisegirls," appears to be a step toward saving the singer's acting career after the disastrous "Glitter" — has signed on for another indie drama.

In "Sweet Science," Carey will play a determined boxing manager who drafts an unknown female boxer to make a name for them both, according to the film's co-producer, Anthony Esposito.

After working with the pop star as the co-producer of "Wisegirls," Esposito said he believes in Mariah and likened her to Cher, who was at first ridiculed for her attempt at the big screen but went on to win an Oscar.

Esposito is still looking for a director for "Sweet Science," which is scheduled to begin shooting this summer. He is also still casting the role of the boxer, which he toyed with offering to Carey, but she would've needed serious training, he said.

The US diva, who suffered box office humiliation with the release of her movie debut, 'Glitter', is take on the role in the forthcoming, 'Sweet Science'.

Co-producer, Anthony Esposito, who worked with Carey on the critically acclaimed indie movie 'Wisegirls', explained: "I had such a great experience with Mariah Carey on 'Wisegirls' that I wanted to make another film with her."

He added: "Her performance in 'Wisegirls' is outstanding with reviews from Sundance [Film Festival] praising her work."

Today on TRL, other than "Boy" being #9 on TRL, the VJ confirmed that Mariah has signed to play on the movie "Sweet Science". The rumors about it have been going for awhile, and this is the first time it's been confirmed. Hopefully we'll hear more details about it soon.

Busta Rhymes F/Mariah Carey "I Know What You Want" (J Records)
I've been sitting on this pick since Busta's new CD It Ain't Safe No More. hit the stores. But I'll credit KXJM/Portland PD Mark Adams with getting me re-fired up about this off-the-hook joint from Busta-Bus and the Flipmode Squad featuring Mariah. It's Busta at his best with MC delivering a soulful riff that works BIGTIME. Busta is on a roll while Mariah is heating up on the heels of her hot performance at the 2003 NBA All-Star Game in Atlanta. Her tribute to MJ was near-perfection and she and Busta slam-dunk this one! BET ON IT!

TTR Drops To #93 On Billboard
"Through The Rain" drops to #93 on the Billboard Hot 100 and drops to #10 on the Hot Dance/Club Charts. Here's an explanation on how TTR is #1 on the sales chart (two weeks in a row) but fails to do well on the hot 100, taken from Billboard Daily News:

Kid Rock's "Picture" featuring Sheryl Crow or Allison Moorer is the Hot 100's fastest-growing track at retail and holds at No. 11. The single is No. 2 on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles Sales tally, behind Mariah Carey's "Through the Rain." Despite the sales, Carey's cut suffers from scarce radio airplay, causing an 84-93 tumble on the Hot 100.

"IKWYW" Debuts At #105
Busta Rhymes Ft. Mariah - "I Know What You Want" debuts on Bubbling Under the Hot 100 at #5 (equals to #105). Mariah is credited as a featured artist on the song which means IF the song peaks at #1, it WILL count as Mariah's 16th #1. The song debuted on the chart based on airplay (21.652 million impressions currently) alone. In order for it to rise higher on the chart, we have to request it!

"Boy" Gains Airplay
'Boy (I Need You)'s airplay increases every week and is now at a peak of 8.69 million audience impressions. Just like IKWYW, to help the song chart on Billboard, we have to request it! Michael suggests to concentrate on POWER 106 (L.A) & WKTU (N.Y) which affect the airplay immensly.

MC On International TV
The Oprah show with MC will air tommorrow- 21 Feb in South Africa. The channel is E.tv at 5:05pm (Thanks David)

The Mariah special "Shining Through the Rain" is airing over at MTV Philippines on March 4, 2003, Tuesday, at 6:00 p.m.

4 MC Albums on BMG Music Club's Top Sellers
Celebrating 14 years as the world's largest music club currently serving more than 20 million members announced their all time sellers today.

The BMG Music Club sold more than 300 million cassettes and CD's in it's 14 years in business, and this month will honor the clubs Top 100 Selling CD's with a special Plaque, plus all Top 100 will be included BMG's music publication issued to club members at a special discount price.

Four Mariah albums entered the BMG Music Club Top 100 Best Selling Albums Of All Time list:

Cam'ron Says The NBA 'Robbed' Him During All-Star Weekend, Seeks Compensation
Mariah Carey may need a boy like Cam'ron, but evidently the NBA does not. The reason why, however, is up for debate.

Cam'ron is claiming that the NBA showed him — and rap in general — no love on February 9 when it stopped him from performing with Carey at a half-time tribute to Michael Jordan during All-Star weekend in Atlanta. The rapper says that Carey asked him to perform "Boy (I Need You)" with her at the show and that the NBA flatly rejected the idea, claiming first that they didn't want rap performed at their half-time shows, and later, that a civil suit the NBA filed against his former label, Untertainment, was the reason they did not want him to participate. The suit in question pertained to the unauthorized use of the NBA's trademarked logo in the 1999 promotion of Cam'ron's S.D.E. album. As a result, Cam's then-label was forced to pull the ads.

However, a spokesperson for the NBA credited an entirely different basis for the league's decision, stating that representatives from Cam'ron's current label, Island Def Jam, made them aware that Cam'ron had an outstanding gun charge against him, and that together, the NBA, Island Def Jam and Mariah Carey's label, Monarc, decided that it was not appropriate to incorporate him into the show. The spokesperson added that because the show had had already been billed as Mariah Carey's tribute to Michael Jordan, creatively the duet did not make sense.

The gun charge in question occurred when Cam'ron was pulled over for a traffic violation in New York in July (see "Cam'ron Arrested On Drug, Gun Charges"). After police saw marijuana in open view, they searched the rapper's vehicle and found a .22 caliber handgun. Cam'ron pleaded not guilty to charges of criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of marijuana and criminal possession of a forged fire department placard, and posted bail. At the time, Cam'ron's label issued a statement saying that it fully supported him and that it believed when the truth came out he would be vindicated.

Whatever the NBA's reason was for not including Cam'ron, he is clearly not happy about it. "There is nothing that will be bigger than a Michael Jordan tribute. I feel robbed," Cam'ron said. "Sitting up in a skybox, watching the All-Star Game, seeing the half-time show, I felt like I was supposed to be out there. I'm on a 40-city tour to promote the Diplomats album, so that means 40 cities are going to hear my opinion on this. This protest is just the beginning. I want compensation. I'm going to take this all the way to the championships."
