Mariah Starts Own Label?
Having split with Virgin Records last year, Mariah Carey continues her
search for a new record label. But wherever she'll end up, it's going to be
Mariah who'll be in charge.
The diva, rumoured to be in talks with Universal Records' daughter company
Def Soul, has exclusively told MTV that any deal will involve her own record
company, which she will head herself. Says Mariah: 'I haven't decided where
I'm going yet but I'm doing a joint-venture with my own label wherever I end
up. I have some incredible people work on a partner with me, wherever I go,
so I'm really excited about the whole thing.

A WINDFALL CALLED MARIAH
Mariah Carey's first week of free agency yields chatter that, despite what you may have read elsewhere, BMG labels Arista, J and RCA are joining Sony and EMI in sitting this one out. That leaves only UMG and WMG, with lips flapping that Island Def Jam and Elektra appear to be the two contenders for the diva's services. With only two contenders, that will probably keep the price of poker down. Observers observing that the interested parties will try to manage their risk, with any new deal likely involving performance-based incentives rather than a big check up front. Word is such a deal will also be conditional on Carey accepting creative input, which she didn't in her Virgin deal. (1/31a)

Joe On Mariah
SUMar235 sent me an excerpt from an interview Joe did with MTVAsia from last April. He says some nice things about M but I don't know about the second question.
What was it like working with folks like Mystikal, Mariah Carey, 'Nsync and all?
They were great to work with. Every time you work with people who are dedicated to their music it's great because they are thinking seriously in their own minds. They are thinking "what can I do to make it better" and when two minds that are thinking on the same line come together, it's naturally going to be absolutely phenomenal.
Did you look down Mariah's shirt?
Oh of course! I would not be a man if I didn't! And I am single so I am allowed to do that. (laughs) Believe me, I worked very closely with Mariah Carey and you ain't gonna hear no stories from me, I'll let her tell you.
Will you be working with her again, in the near future?
I would love to. She's great; she's wonderful to work with and she has an incredible personality and I can't just talk about her enough. She's one of the most amazing artists I have ever worked with. She's very talented, but her talent is so underrated! And I just really wish the best for her and I just want her to be happy forever. She's one of those sweet people.

Glitter IS A Good Movie
Thanx to EaglesSteelers15 for this awesome Glitta review from Cinemark.com:
Glitter is a good film and Mariah is surprisingly good.
I don't know why Glitter is getting bashed at. True, it's not a perfect movie nor does it have potential to win awards but the fact is that the film actually delivers the goods.
Glitter is both a fantasy and a semi-biography on Mariah Carey's life. We're treated to a story of a young singer who later made it big in America, led by Mariah herself. Along the way, she has friends to support her in the world of big music, plus she has a boyfriend named Dice.
But just like any showbiz celebrity, Mariah faces complexity and deep problems which pushes her towards the limit of her character.
Glitter is not just a story of a singer, it's also a combination of love story, drama, musical and slight comedy. I find Glitter inspiring and its script is nice.
Performance wise, Mariah excels playing singer Billie Frank. Not only does Mariah have great singing (her soundtrack album is a convincing buy), she CAN ACTUALLY ACT! I was in the theater a few hours ago expecting everyone to leave Mariah behind in the acting dust but she flew well with them. Mariah also used her past crying skills from her music videos to cry in the film...convincing enough.
For her co-star Max Beesley, who plays Dice, he actually has surprisingly good performance. Not only does he make a convincing music producer/DJ, he also makes good drama and romance as Dice. Max CAN deliver characters. It's also noteworthy that he acts pretty well considering the fact that his co-star Carey is a worldwide-famous pop diva. Any actor who plays Carey's lead man is supposed to be jittery, and Max defied that.
For the music, as I said above, it's pretty good and the soundtrack of this movie is indeed a convincing buy. Contrary to what others said, Carey's voice and singing is still in top-notch quality...just like way back in 1990.
Known worldwide as a mighty pop diva, Carey plays the lead role very well and with those love scenes and career scenes, we're probably seeing some of the events that possibly happened in Carey's real life! It's also rare to see Mariah on a bed scene or kissing scene with a partner.
Glitter is truly a worthy movie to watch. Don't expect it to be to cheap in quality or a perfect epic-like film...it's right in the middle of those levels and fortunately it's GOOD TO WATCH. Not only does it entertain, it inspires as well.
Forget the bashing, go watch Glitter now.
Glitter is easily one of the BEST POP DIVA-LED MOVIES TO DATE.
Finally someone tells the truth!
UK Mariah B'day Book
I got this info from Matte (Mariah Carey UK), who is doing the UK Fanbook for Mariah's birthday
I want to let all the Mariah fans in the UK know that they have the opportunity to contribute to the UK Birthday Fanbook for Mariah!
Every UK fan is welcome to include as much as they like - letters, poems, photos, drawings - whatever they can email to me (mariahstheme@hotmail.com) before March 1st! I will be shipping the fanbook to Mariah Daily's Danielle after this date who is working with us to get the fanbook to Mariah!
Let's overwhelm Mariah with a book bursting with support and love from her UK fans! Please contribute as much as you can to this project and encourage other UK fans to do the same!"
I'd really apppreciate it if you could help spread the word! I don't want to have a tiny embarassing book delivered to Mariah, I want her to be pleasantly shocked by the number of UK fans that contributed!
Lamb Loses A Friend
SASkittles007@aol.com asked me to post this:
One of my mother's kids that used to go to her day care died Feb 6, and we just found out. I was wondering if you would post it and ask everyone to pray for him, family and friends. Please it would mean the world to me. You have to read his story too. I really want the world to know what a great loss it was to loose someone like him. =(.

News About Wise Girls
My lamb Matte, webmaster of Mariah Carey UK, sent me this info:
A representative of Lions Gate has spoken with Mariah Carey UK and revealed the following:
"We do own the rights to this film in the US, but have not decided on a theatrical or home video release date. The international dates are still up in the air as well. I should have more info in about a month for two for this film."
It has been confirmed that "Wise Girls" will be shown in Belgium also and this is all the information that is known right now.
It just confirms what we already know but I thought a quote might be useful if you want it ;)
Is "Sweet Science" Fake?
I got this info from Ryan:
Mariah is not in SWEET SCIENCE =*( it's Meg Ryan and it's not even called sweet science its Against the Ropes.
Go to Upcoming Movies.com to find out more. Here is what it said on the website:
Against the Ropes
Release Date: TBA 2003
Distributor: Paramount Pictures
Production Companies: The Cort-Madden Company (Save the Last Dance); most likely with co-financing from Elie Samaha either Franchise or Dante, according to The Hollywood Reporter, 9/6/01
Cast: Meg Ryan (Jackie Kallen), Omar Epps; other cast not announced yet.
Cast Notes: Back in early 2000, Sandra Bullock was in talks to star as Kallen, but dropped out. Although James "Light's Out" Toney has recently started an acting career, starting with Ali, in which he plays boxing great Joe Frazier, and then with Undisputed, he will not be playing himself (since he's 13 years older than the 19-year-old kid he was when he met Kallen). You
can find out more about Toney (and this film) in this HouseofBoxing.com article. Toney's rival, Roy Jones, Jr., who has a role in The Matrix Reloaded, will most likely *not* be playing him in this film.
Director: Charles S. Dutton (directorial debut; there's no word yet about whether he will also take a supporting role)
Screenwriter: Cheryl Edwards (cowriter of Paramount's 2001 hit, Save the Last Dance)
Based upon: The true story of boxing manager Jackie Kallen, who guided the careers of several major careers, including four world champions, like middleweight champ James Toney, as well as Bronco McKart and Thomas Hearns.
Premise: This is the true story of Jackie Kallen (Ryan), a Jewish woman from Detroit who became a boxing manager, guiding several major careers. This film focuses on her relationship with one boxer (Epps), who's reportedly a composite of several (including Toney, McKart and Hearns). Kallen eventually left her husband of 30 years, and moved to Los Angeles, becoming the
commissioner of the International Female Boxers Association.
Filming: Production is scheduled to start in mid-November, 2002 at locations in Detroit and Toronto, after Meg Ryan wraps up filming of In the Cut. Filming was originally scheduled to start in mid-November, 2001, and then, February, 2002.
Genres: Biography, Boxing, Drama, Female

Ask For M On NBC
Michael sent me this info:
On NBC's "LAST CALL" with Carson Daly, you can email them with a guest you would like them to have. Please e-mail them at lastcall@nbc.com and tell them that you'd like Mariah Carey to be on the show.
"LAST CALL" is filmed in Studio 8H where "SATURDAYNIGHTLIVE" is filmed.
Jermaine Talks About M
I got this info from Daniel:
I was listening to B96 in Chicago and Jermaine Dupri was on the show. The DJ's, Eddie and Jo Bo, said why don't they sign Mariah to So So Def and Jermaine said he would like to talk to her about that and they asked him who was he working with next. He said he'll be working with Dabrat and Mariah!

A California Doctor Rocks With The Stars
Mariah Carey singing a roller coaster of notes. Britney Spears slinking across the stage in a sexy outfit. The Eagles rocking to "Hotel California." Stuart Finkelstein, MD, has seen them all, but not as part of the audience. You'll likely find him watching from just offstage. But you have to look closely: He dresses in black to blend into the shadows. His inconspicuousness, however, belies his importance. Dr. Finkelstein is doctor to the stars, the one who makes sure Mariah, Britney and the rest are healthy when they take the stage."

I am thinking of doing some Rainbow conerts, since I have them all in audio. We should have some stuff up later this week.

Mariah's Screen Time
'WISE' MARIAH: Her summer 2001 movie "Glitter" may have tanked with critics and audiences, but Mariah Carey is having a second life on the silver screen, says the Hollywood Reporter. The 31-year-old pop diva, who has had a run of lousy luck lately, received glowing reviews for her starring role in last month's Sundance Film Festival selection "Wisegirls," and as a result is preparing to reunite with the film's producer, Anthony Esposito, for her next movie, the drama "Sweet Science." According to the trade paper, Carey will star as a zealous boxing manager who drafts an unknown female boxer and then sets out to make them both famous. The project is due to begin shooting this summer.

Loving The Knight Life
At Philstar.com, there is an article about a Brian McKnight concert and in the paragraph below, it says how Regine Velasquez and Brian performed Whenever You Call. To read the whole story click the above link. (Thanks to Batangasboi for this info)
Regine was in a silver-black gown and way-high heels, singing a duet with McKnight, who was ably tinkering with the keyboards. They sang Whenever You Call, which Brian originally sang with a pre-breakdown Mariah Carey. Regine, with her complement of high notes in tow, did an improvement with her brilliant voice (compared to the then breathy squeak of Mariah). Score a point for Filipino ability – which McKnight was only too willing to acknowledge.
Beauty and the Beat
Rory informed me that Mariah was the fourth best butt on MTV's Beauty and the Beat tonight.
Ant & Dec
Mariah Carey proved a far more accommodating diva when she appeared on Ant & Dec's last ever show last month. The singer chatted to fans in the cd:uk café and happily posed for autographs. She even agreed to appear on Ant & Dec's last ever Chums episode when she played Cat Deeley's Maid Of Honour. 'It was great fun. I really enjoyed it,' said Mariah.

Another Awesome Wise Girls Review
Movie Profile
The Setup
After her fiancé is killed in a car crash, former medical student Meg (Mira Sorvino), moves in with her grandmother and gets a job at a mob-run pasta joint, where she witnesses some ghastly incidents in the back rooms. Should she tell her pals, waitresses Raychel (Carey) and Kate (Melora Walters)? Or should she just leave town?
The Breakdown
Capitalizing on the success of all-chick flicks like "Coyote Ugly" and mob hits like HBO's "The Sopranos," "Wise Girls" combines girl power with some gory "Goodfellas"-style antics. The result is an enjoyable guilty pleasure destined to win over female audiences--or at least become a late-night cable hit. Despite reported catfights between Sorvino and pop diva Carey on the set, the two couldn't be chummier on screen. Sorvino is subdued as the mourning Meg, while Carey has a ball with Raychel's flashy jewelry and Brooklyn attitude. The story could use some wising up, but the gotcha! finale is a pleasant surprise.
Thanx to Josephos (CanadianLambs) for this info
Chat With Isabel Gomes
Today on a Brazilian site called Globo.com they held a chat with Isabel Gomes who played young Billie in Glitter. She's been in Brazil all week promoting Glitter, and joined my friends Tahiana (Mariah Connection) and Raphael (Mariah Vision) tonight for the premier of the movie at the Cinemark Theatre.
There was only a small group of fans during the chat today, so I was able to ask a couple questions, which she answered. There was also a movie player so I was able to see her the whole time. Unfortunately the whole chat was in Portugese but she answered a few things in English, including my questions. She sang for us as well and her voice was incredible! She sang the chorus to "Hero", "My All" and "Lillie's Blue", which is the song young Billie and her mom sing at the beginning of the movie. It was most definitely her voice and she sounded just amazing.
Tahiana had the pleasure of sitting next to Isabel during the whole movie at the premier and helped her sign autographs as well. She said they sold promotional stuff like Greatest Hits post cards as well as promo purses and shirts for Glitter.
I will have the transcript up as soon as I can have it translated, along with more info about the Brazilian premier as I receive the news. Until then, you can check out 4 adorable new pictures of Isabel which were taken today during the chat, in Gallery 3, as well as the picture of Miss Mariah from this week's US Weekly

One picture is of her at the Sundance Film Festival in tha plaid dress and it's a nice size picture and another is a recent picture of M, with a butterfly tattoo on her back. Check it out cause the new US Weekly hits stands this weekend.
Plus, Jeff informed me that there is a bit in the latest issue of Maxim Blender magazine. It comes with a bonus booklet called, "In Bed With The Stars!" It has a full page picture of Mariah, from the Rolling Stone shoot (one where she is on bed with book, in fishnet stockings). Also, there is a picture of Mariah in Union Jack Boxing shorts and a picture/review of Glitter.
Updates
I apologize there wern't many updates this week but truthfully, there isn't much happening in Mariah land and we were working on MariahDaily.net all week. However, I did update the Calendar page because some of you informed me that January wallpapers were loading. The Important Dates/Magazine information in the left bar has been updated. Also, I added two new links to the links page (also included them below) and thanks to Liron, all the links on the page should work now, since all the dead links were removed.

MariahDaily.com VS. MariahDaily.net
Well all files are loaded to MariahDaily.net now. Instead of moving to MariahDaily.net though, we are going to keep all the main stuff here on MariahDaily.com and use the .net address for the multimedia stuff, like videos, etc. However, if the .com address ever goes down again, like it did for 2 weeks just recently, we will add all the news to the .net address for the time being.
Liron is working on the .net address right now and Mariah's performance of Heartbreaker at Music Fair in Japan will be up in a few hours. I noticed the .net address is not working 100% though and I am working on correcting the problem. Be patient with us though because we are working hard to try and get everything to work right. Thanks!

Reel Deals
Just because ''Glitter'' was an abject failure doesn't mean Mariah Carey's movie career is down for the count. After earning positive buzz at Sundance for her role as a streetwise waitress opposite Mira Sorvino in ''Wisegirls,'' Carey is reteaming with that film's producer, Anthony Esposito, to star in ''Sweet Science.'' In the indie drama, shooting this summer, she'll play the manager of a woman boxer. ''I had such a great experience with Mariah Carey on 'Wisegirls' that I wanted to make another film with her,'' Esposito told Variety. ''Her performance in 'Wisegirls' is outstanding, with reviews from Sundance praising her work. I feel [that] given the right role, the depth of Mariah's performance will make everyone take notice of her great acting ability.''

Take Two
After receiving a string of favorable reviews for her starring turn in the Sundance Film Festival selection "Wisegirls," Mariah Carey is set to reteam with the film's producer, Anthony Esposito, for her next acting job, the independent drama "Sweet Science." Carey will star in the project as a determined boxing manager who drafts an unknown female boxer to make a name for them both.
"I had such a great experience with Mariah Carey on 'Wisegirls' that I wanted to make another film with her," Esposito said. "Her performance in 'Wisegirls' is outstanding, with reviews from Sundance praising her work. I feel [that] given the right role, the depth of Mariah's performance will make everyone take notice of her great acting ability."
Gary Goldman ("Total Recall"), Stan Seidel ("One Night at McCool's") and Rick Angres wrote the "Sweet Science" screenplay. Esposito will produce the film through his company, Leading Pictures, along with Meg Liberman and Cami Patton. Producers are eyeing a summer start for "Science."
Plucked as a special screening for Sundance last month, "Wisegirls" is scheduled for release this year from Lions Gate Films. In the David Anspaugh-directed film, Carey stars alongside Mira Sorvino and Melora Walters as Rachel, a sassy-yet-sensitive waitress who works in a restaurant run by the mob.
Carey made her feature-starring debut last year in the 20th Century Fox rags-to-riches tale "Glitter." She also made a cameo appearance on an episode of Fox's "Ally McBeal" last month and, even more recently, made headlines for parting ways with her record label, Virgin Records. Sources said Carey is in conversations with several labels about a new recording contract but that she has yet to make a decision about where her next music home will be.

What More Can I Give: A Hoax?
The following article is about the whole story of the (non)release of "What More Can I Give" - the Michael Jackson charity project that Mariah was supposed to collaborate on:
Maybe I haven't been listening that closely to the radio lately. Maybe you've heard Michael Jackson's charity single, "What More Can I Give?"
No? I didn't think so.
We are now five months past the disasters on September 11 and there's been no sign of the famous single that was supposed to raise — in Michael's words, not mine — $50 million for the victims' families.
You may recall that Jackson made the Washington, D.C. organizers of the "United We Stand" live benefit on October 21, 2001 re-name their event "What More Can I Give? — United We Stand." Jackson went around the country collecting vocals from various stars to add to the single, including Celine Dion, members of 'Nsync and the Backstreet Boys.

Great Review for Wisegiirls
Lucky people who have seen "Wise Girls" already - wrote fantastic comments that were published on the Internet Movies Data Base Site.
One of the reviewers is Mariah's fan Amy who told us her story when she got back from the premiere last month!
Here is a short review from someone else:
In a word - "Brilliant"!
Mariah Carey as Rachel was the biggest surprise for me... she was absolutely *fantastic* as a foul-mouthed mob chick with a big heart.
Mira and Melora were also excellent. You have to see this movie. The script and the actresses are EXCELLENT!
Read the rest of the great reviews HERE.
Thanks MariahBuzz for finding it.

Why Was Mariah Daily Down?
Tuesday (February 5th), Mariah Daily was down and then later that night it came back up shortly. Hours later, once again, the site was not working and remained that way until Saturday, February 9th. The reason the site shut down was because the server that Mariah Daily was on completely crashed. Peel, who hosts mariahdaily.com, had to back everything up that was on Daily and move it to the new server, which took a while to do. When the site came back up on Saturday (Feb. 9th), we were unable to update because the ftp server also crashed. So, today was the first time we could get access to Mariah Daily so we could update.
Like you, I was completely frustrated with how long it took to get this site back up and running. Due to that, I purchased my own domain name and host and I will be moving this site. Mariah Daily is changing location from mariahdaily.com to mariahdaily.net in about one week! I am a little upset to lose the .com but I am tired of this website going down several times a month and I want it on a much more secure server. Plus, no more pop-up banners and no more ad banners on Mariah Daily, which should make all of you happy too! Webmasters, please change the site address in your link pages too and pass the word around of the site change location! This site will probably be shutting down shortly, so make sure you bookmark mariahdaily.net
Below is some news from the past week that we received...
Get Well Book..Mariah Responds
Last year, during Mariah's exhaustion period, we put together a book here at MD to wish her well. There were thousands of messages sent to Mariah within three different books. One was featured on MTV Cribs recently even. Well on Tuesday, one of Mariah's assistants called Lillian. Lillian was at school at the moment and they left a message with her family saying how Mariah wanted to send Lillian an autgraphed Loverboy cd single for her letter in the Get Well Books she received. Lillian had provided her phone # in the letter but not her address and that's why they contacted her. So as you can see, it pays to participate in these letter gatherings for Mariah. Make sure you check out the Birthday Project link on the right to participate in the latest one and make it unique. Ya never know, Mariah might be writing or calling you. It happened to Lillian and it happened to me, you might be next!!
Wise Girls in Belgium
Gilles, from Heroe's Of Mariah, informed me that Wise Girls will hit Belgian theaters in Fall/Winter 2002.
New Mariah Message
Mariah left another new voice message at her Official Site and thanks to Honey & Kate, from Butterflies Are Free, we have the transcript for you...
Mariah: (laughing) Hello! I'm calling you from the kitchen tonight. With Jack and Ginger and Mary Ann...
Mary Ann: Hello!
Mariah: Mary Ann's chimin' the bell this evening. Actually I was trying to get the dog saying hello to you, let me see if I can do it. Hold on. Mary Ann, can you hold the phone for a second please? Thank you lamb!
Mary Ann: Of course (Mariah's clapping and calling for Jack in the background) Now what will be taking place is this present...moment...
Mariah: Come here Jack!
Mary Ann: She's ready to kill!
Mariah: Say hello! Come here Jack!
Jack barking
Mariah (laughing) I love you, enjoy you and I appreciate you! Bye!
Mary Ann: Bye Bye!
Check out the audio in the voice message page.

Virgin Split Was Good Move For Mariah
Mariah Carey's recent split with Virgin Records after
just one album was a good move for the artist,
according to a recently completed Billboard.com poll.
A total of 60% of 4,099 voters agreed that the artist
is better off after accepting the label's payout of
$28 million (on top of a $21 million advance) to
settle her multi-album contract after the
disappointing sales of "Glitter," her only Virgin
release.
Of that total, 36% believe that Carey can now find a
new label willing to help her return to the level of
her past multi-platinum releases. Another 24% said the
money and newfound freedom to do what she pleases in
the future made her the winner in the deal.
On the other hand, 31% said that Carey's star power
has waned, and that the split was better for Virgin,
which decided to cut its losses in paying out her
contract, rather than risk an uncertain future with
the artist. Another 9% said that the negative press
she received for "Glitter," coupled with last year's
emotional and physical breakdown, now makes her an
undesirable artist for any label.

Mariah And The Anthem
It was just one note: a startling, near-ultrasonic squeal on the word ''free.'' But that impossibly high flourish was enough to make Mariah Carey's Sunday night Super Bowl performance her first unambiguous triumph in months. And judging from the look of relief on Carey's face as she finished the national anthem, the beleaguered superstar had needed nothing less.
Other than that one glorious octave leap, Carey's ''Star-Spangled Banner'' was remarkably restrained, with the diva resting comfortably in the low end of her prodigious, oft-over-used vocal range (despite rumors to the contrary, she did not appear to be lip-synching). The usually barely-dressed singer even dug deep enough into her closet to find a tasteful blue dress to wear, though she couldn't resist accessorizing with some seriously bling-blinging jewelry.
In all, the brief appearance felt like a first step on a long road toward career recovery for Carey, who slipped into ''Behind the Music''-land last year with a ''physical and emotional breakdown'' and the failed movie debut ''Glitter,'' along with its flop soundtrack album. Last month, Carey's record label paid tens of millions to break its contract with her; the Super Bowl appearance was her first public effort since that news broke.
Carey's uncharacteristically modest performance Sunday night seemed particularly glittering in contrast with the pre-game show's alternately histrionic and saccharine patriotic tunes. There, any heartfelt touches by Marc Anthony, Mary J. Blige, Patti Labelle, and Wynonna were drowned out by goopy string arrangements and the stomping feet of teen dancers in red, white, and blue Statue of Liberty outfits. Paul McCartney's version of his would-be anthem ''Freedom'' was less bombastic, but we've already heard more than enough of that post-Sept. 11 quickie.
Halftime show performers U2 had much less at stake than Carey: Their two-decade career is on an upswing that includes numerous Grammy nods for 2000's ''All That You Can't Leave Behind.'' They brought along the heart-shaped stage from their ''Elevation'' tour, and repeated the tour's tribute to the victims of Sept. 11's terrorist attacks, projecting the names of the fallen on a screen behind the band.
Lead singer Bono spent Saturday speaking at the World Economic Forum in New York, and all that chatter about Third World debt must have worn on his vocal cords; he had to shout his way through the high notes on ''Beautiful Day'' and ''Where the Streets Have No Name'' (which the band introduced with a snippet of the obscure ''Unforgettable Fire'' track ''MLK''). Still, the band's road-forged confidence and Bono's camera-grabbing swagger were the latest reminders of U2's continuing vitality

Mariah Sings Live
Stephen wrote us to tell us that Mariah did sing live at the Superbowl. He works for the NFL's Marketing Department and was assigned Assistant Director of Talent, basically meaning he was in charge of the artists including Mary J Blige, Marc Anthony and Mariah Carey. They all sang live and at the end of Mariah's performance, she came to him and told him she hopes that her fans and everyone else liked it cause she had trouble hearing herself in the ear monitors. They kept feeding back and she also said that she usually never sings with the ear monitors. She said she had a hard time hearing herself when she hit the "Free" note. In the end, it all worked out.

Great Superbowl Reviews
As it should be, Mariah's performance of the national American anthem at last night's Superbowl has receieved fantastic reviews.
MariahBuzz collected some of those reviews from various sources and from people on FOMM. Check them out:
From EW:
It was just one note: a startling, near-ultrasonic squeal on the word ''free.'' But that
impossibly high flourish was enough to make Mariah Carey's Sunday night Super Bowl
performance her first unambiguous triumph in months. And judging from the look of relief on
Carey's face as she finished the national anthem, the beleaguered superstar had needed
nothing less.
From ET Online:
After the coin toss, R&B sensation Mary J. Blige and Latin pop sensation Marc Anthony
performed "America the Beautiful" and "The Star Spangled Banner," backed by the Boston Pops
orchestra. Pop diva Mariah Carey then stepped in to sing the National Anthem.
From Boston Globe:
Best rendition of the national anthem since Whitney Houston in '91: Mariah Carey, the biggest-selling female artist in history.
From People.com:
Marc Anthony and Mary J. Blige, accompanied by the Boston Pops, sang "America the
Beautiful," and, on an even higher note, Mariah Carey -- wearing a full-length, royal blue
dress and looking and sounding strong -- delivered "The Star-Spangled Banner."
From Contra Costa Times:
First came a booming rendition of the national anthem by Mariah Carey, and some four hours
later, a shower of red, white and blue confetti fell to the Superdome turf.
From NY Times:
Mariah Carey sang the national anthem in a wardrobe and performance that were simple but
elegant. (Two words you'd never expect to see in the same sentence as Mariah Carey.) Her
straight hair, unadorned blue dress and diamond necklace suited her low-key, inflected
delivery of the song.
From NY Daily News:
Mariah Carey sang the national anthem just before the game, doing more to rehabilitate her
career, and before a larger audience, than any other move she could have made.
From Chicago Tribune:
Yes, a dose of patriotism is fair enough at the American professional football championship.
That's what singing the National Anthem is for, an opportunity which, incidentally, the
much-maligned Mariah Carey handled with aplomb. With her understated rendition, she
demonstrated that at least one North American pop diva understands that singing the most
notes does not equal being the best singer.....Mariah Carey scored a victory before the game
with a beautiful rendition of the national anthem."
From Washington Post:
Mariah Carey sang a stirring rendition of the national anthem.
From Canoe:
Thankfully, mercifully came the national anthem sung by pop music's Frances Farmer, Mariah
Carey.
From USA Today:
Former president Bill Clinton's appearance on the pre-game program elicited boos, while
Mariah Carey drew hoots of "I love you!"
The catcalls quieted, however, when Carey sang the national anthem.
The fans held up red, white and blue glow-sticks in the darkened dome as Mariah Carey sang
the national anthem.
From Sun
Times:
While the Fox Network missed no opportunity to trumpet this Super Bowl as a celebration of
"the spirit of America," the producers somehow missed the fact that two of their three
musical draws were Irish and English. Mariah Carey was the only American citizen, but she
got extra points for being a New Yorker.
Carey acquitted herself well during a low-key but still diva-esque reading of "The
Star-Spangled Banner".
Possitive Comments & Articles About M
From USA Today (Thanks Deland)
Music insiders don't sell Mariah short
When Glitter's fairy dust settles, pop's golden girl will shine again. So say music industry
observers who expect Mariah Carey to land a fat record deal, despite a bomb album that ended
her estimated $100 million multi-album contract with EMI. The label's $49 million buyout
won't sideline Carey, who sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl on Sunday, for long.
"She's going to get signed in a heartbeat," predicts Martin Kirkup of Direct Management,
which handles k.d. lang and Patti LaBelle and recently ushered Eden's Crush onto the charts.
"She's got an amazing five-octave range. Most labels would be eager to sign her to a
high-royalty, low-advance deal. The biggest danger is that this is a business where
perception can become reality."
Read the rest of the article here.
From LA Times (Thanks Amy)
They Call the Win Mariah's
To celebrate Mariah Carey's latest comeback, the National Football League will stage a Super
Bowl today right after she sings the national anthem. And why not celebrate? A few months
ago Carey was hired by EMI, the recording company, and paid $21 million merely for signing a
contract. A few days ago she was fired by the same company and was paid even more--$28
million--merely to walk away. Please, can we be fired just like her?
The reason for paying the high-strung 31-year-old singer to not sing is that her beautifully
crystalline voice, which has sold more albums than anyone but Elvis and the Beatles, is no
longer selling well. Last fall her movie "Glitter" fared worse than poorly at the box
office, while its soundtrack attracted only 501,000 buyers, 1/286th as many listeners as
last year's Super Bowl had viewers. But before we start feeling too smug as silent
spectators at America's Fame Game--building up bright young stars to tear them down and
create another lovable underdog--let's remember that lavishly rewarding lack of success is a
hallowed American tradition. We pay farmers millions not to farm. We aid the enemies we
wallop in war more than the friends who stand beside us. When executives lead their huge
corporations into poor sales, hopeless disarray and even bankruptcy, they're paid large sums
to walk away. Why shouldn't an album failure pay as handsomely as bankruptcy in, say, the
energy trading business? Sure, these transients in the spotlight are as disposable as a
November People magazine. They rise. They fall. Some come back, like Cher, a Super
Bowl-performing alum; others don't, like what-was-his-name Michael Belton?
So maybe there is something to this new Doing Less for More Mariah Maxim, a lucrative lesson
for those of us misguided souls raised to think that only a full day's work was worth a full
day's pay.
If down is now up and vice versa in this topsy-turvy world, maybe the underdog New England
Patriots do have a chance today against the St. Louis Rams. Our advice: Take the points and
Mariah's voice.
MC played on Rick Dees (Thanks poggi2)
Rick Dees on KISSFM Los Angeles just played Mariah's National Anthem..
and he said something like "here is something that will wake you up. When she hit the high
note he said, "wow...that's a high note!" and after it was done he said that it "gives you
goosebumps"!
From cnnsi.com (Thanks vnce73)
On another Sports Site...cnnsi.com...Peter King Writes a column every Monday after the
