//
6:57 PM EST Updated by Liron
The Billboard Hot 100 results are in: as previously estimated, Mariah claims the #1 and #2 spots on the Hot 100 and the Hot 100 Airplay with "We Belong Together" and "Shake It Off" respectively.
This week marks "We Belong Together's" 14th non-consecutive week at #1 on the Hot 100! Here are the longest running #1 singles on the Hot 100:
16 Weeks Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men - "One Sweet Day" (1996)
14 Weeks Whitney Houston - "I Will Always Love You" (1992) Boyz II Men - "I'll Make Love To You" (1994) Los Del Rio - "Macarena" (1996) Elton John - "Candle In The Wind" (1997) Mariah Carey - "We Belong Together" (2005)
This week also marks "We Belong Together's" 16th consecutive week atop the Hot 100 Airplay chart. Here are the longest running #1 singles on that chart:
18 Weeks Goo Goo Dolls - "Iris" (1998)
16 Weeks No Doubt - "Don't Speak" (1996) Mariah Carey - "We Belong Together" (2005)
"Shake It Off" is the Greatest Gainer / Airplay on the Hot 100 Airplay chart with an increase of 24.94 million audience impressions from last week. Its final BDS Airplay figure for this week is: 134,723,400 audience impressions.
From E! Online: TOP OF THE CHARTS: Mariah Carey snagging the top two spots on Billboard's Hot 100 charts for "We Belong Together" and "Shake It Off" respectively--the first time a female artist has achieved the feat.
From E! Online: Mariah Makes Noise on Charts: Hilary Duff is big. Mariah Carey is bigger.
As Duff's Most Wanted logged its second straight week atop the album chart, Carey made history again over on the singles chart. Already tops among female artists with 16 Billboard number ones, Carey became the first female artist to lock down the number one and two positions, with her mega-hit "We Belong Together" marking its 14th week atop the Billboard Hot 100 and her new single, "Shake It Off," right behind.
The tracks come from The Emancipation of Mimi, which remains a Top 10 fixture on the pop album charts, finishing last week at number three with 89,000 in sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures, behind only Duff's best-of set (101,000) and Now That's What I Call Music! 19 (96,000).

-- Download a video clip (3.3MB, in MOV format) of Mariah leaving the National Hotel at around 2am to attend a post-VMA party, Sunday, August 28th. --"If you're over 30, you know that the Video Music Awards look calamitous when they're broadcast. They also look over- packaged, with no spontaneity and little talent from the show's performers. The other night's show was so creepy that even Mariah Carey had the good sense to put on her garish, overwrought water nymph-a-thon from another location. She conveyed exactly what the VMAs felt like: You wouldn't be there if you had to," Fox News's Roger Friedman comments. --Post-VMA chatter from Slant Magazine's Sal Cinquemani and Eric Henderson: GrandmaHenderson: I'm really at a loss for the Gwen/Snoop thing. I've got nothing there. HotSexyMusicEditor2005: i've got nothing period. i'm out of witty things to say. Green Day won a lot. Missy Elliott won too. GH: She even beat Kanye West. That was a mild surprise HSME2005: no mariah though. boo hoo. will the woman ever get any respek? GH: She just drowned. HSME2005: she likes to splash water apparently. she thinks it's sexy and cool GH: A beach ball would've sealed the performance. GH: Or a set of water wings. Click here to read the rest of the conversation. --From MTV VMA News: It's hard to keep track of everyone's names. Just ask Brooke Hogan, who made the rounds with her family. "We went to a big party last night and we got to meet ... oh, I can't remember her name," she said. "Mom?" "You can't remember Mariah Carey? Hello!" Linda Hogan responded. "That was the highlight of the whole weekend. She's like a princess." --Excerpt from a review of "The Emancipation of Mimi" by the Philippine Star: "Now, Mariah has also had a good rep for having an excellent head for business, particularly in marketing herself. She is more than an artist. She knows what will sell. She has packaged a sound and a look that remains widely imitated. She knows that her fans like to listen to her sing a single syllable across several notes. She knows which artists to collaborate with. She is, however, not infallible and has made some wrong choices. But she can certainly put all that she has learned to work again and win. And won she has with her new album The Emancipation of Mimi." Read the full review here. ______________________________________________________________

Alex Reports: Mariah's VMA Rehearsal
//
11:21 AM EST Updated by Liron
Alex, also known as Aladerri writes: "I went to Miami expecting to see Mariah and thanks to Mariah Daily was able to find out details about her performance. Fortunately for me, she was 2 doors down from my hotel. I went there on Saturday and got invited to attend the rehearsal. She rehearsed 4 times on Saturday, starting at 10:00 PM. She was interrupted twice by the rain but she finally finished at about 1:00 AM. She then went inside her penthouse to change and go out. On Sunday, she rehearsed again before the actual show at around 8:00 PM to 9:20 PM with another short blue dress. This time, the producers asked her to get inside the pool and splash some water. She was very nice to everyone there and talked to some fans from the stage. Her performance was great! I loved the way she got it all together and the set was gorgeous! Miami was a little too hot... and with those torches, it was even hotter! Shortly after her performance, she went back inside her hotel. At around 1:30 AM she left to a party with all her crew and her dog Jack. Unfortunately they did not allow cameras and I was not able to take any picture of MC but I had a great time! -- Aladerri. " Alex was able to take a picture with Jack and reminded us to vote for him at the Relly awards! ______________________________________________________________

A Possible Duet Between Mariah and Jessica Simpson?
//
4:23 AM EST Updated by Lynn
At Friday's In Touch party for Mariah at the Raleigh Hotel, the big scene was Miss Carey and Jessica Simpson hugging, chatting and generally becoming the focus of every eye and ear. Producer Jermaine Dupri - he created Carey's Sunday night National Hotel rooftop musical number - was so caught up in the Carey-Simpson gabfest he pulled out his BlackBerry to voice message himself about arranging a possible duet between the two singers, whose clothing-optional fashion sense is as impressive as their octaves. (Dupri also produced Carey's comeback CD.) ______________________________________________________________

So is it true that Mariah Carey got cozy with the newly-single Eddie Murphy? Yes, according to several sources and photographic evidence, the VMA vixen was whispering sweet nothings into the divorcing comic's ears. --After winning her two Teen Choice awards for "R&B Artist" and "Love Song", Mariah admitted, "I got my two surf boards that really don't go with my award cases so I'm going to have to find a new place for them. Make sure to visit Seventeen and give Mariah 5 stars! -- Rolling Stone's review of Rihanna's "Music of the Sun" album mentions Mariah: "Photogenic Rihanna suggests a young Mariah Carey minus the birdcalls, and the generic vocal hiccups and frills clearly learned from American R&B often overwhelm her Caribbean charm." --The Philippine Mariah Carey Fanclub's (PMCF's) 3rd Year Anniversary Party was a huge success. More than 35 fans and guests attended the party last August 27th at Hobby's Bar and Resto, Makati City. Entertainment Weekly Lauds Mariah's VMA Performance
//
2:32 PM EST Updated by Lynn
Best Use of a Terrible Setting. I'm getting the impression that the Killers and Mariah Carey each did something to upset the suits at MTV. How else to explain why their respective performances were banished to Miami's finest hotel courtyards? Still, the Killers' ''Mr. Brightside'' rocked hard enough to drown out the voice in my head that fretted about those unfortunate hotel guests with Monday-morning wake-up calls. And Carey's glass-shattering range and attention-getting gams (that's how you work a look, Eva) almost made me forget about the weird scene with Jermaine Dupri happening in that nearby cabana. From New York Times: There were elaborate water-sculptures all over the stages, too, although some artists wanted more. Mariah Carey ended her solid two-song medley by wading into a swimming pool. From Miami Herald: With Green Day and Kelly Clarkson sucking up awards, and they, Coldplay and Mariah Carey giving some of the best performances, the evening belonged as much to rock and pop as hip-hop. ______________________________________________________________

Murphy makes merry with Mariah
//
6:32 AM EST Updated by Lynn
The songbird - in town for an appearance at last night's MTV awards - heard her cell phone ring while she was holding a dinner party for friends at the Raleigh Hotel's penthouse. It was newly single Murphy, demanding she come over to Prive, where the $20-million movie man was hanging out with pals Quincy Jones and Ice T and the latter's cantilevering cutie, Coco. Carey did decide to leave her party but may have taken too long at the makeup mirror. By the time she arrived, at 2:30, Murphy had been standing at the top of the stairs for 20 minutes, with his arms folded, saying: "Where the hell is she?" Carey, who's ditched the tube tops and two-sizes-too-small cutoffs for more sophisticaed styles, finally showed up, looking sexy and relaxed, report our spies. Both stars immediately started whispering into one another's ears and nuzzling. Back at a banquette with pals, Murphy, also looking relaxed, "held hands with her under the table," one nearby spywitness adds. By 3:30, the pair had slipped out the back door unnoticed (perhaps driven by a pesky drag queen named Wanda who suddenly snapped at Ice T, "Stay away from my man!"). The were holding hands as they slid into the backseat of a Mercedes, and zipped over to the five-star Hotel Setai. Our helpful spy, who followed them, says: "They were sitting in the car 15, 20 minutes until nobody was on the street and then they went in together." Also in today's New York Daily NewsSome were also taking Mariah Carey's name in vain, as the diva ordered the storm-tossed grounds of the National Hotel turned into a stage for her VMA performance. Yes, the American Airlines Arena was apparently sufficient for all the other artists. "She insisted upon a full-dress rehearsal, without her, on Saturday night," grumbled one guest who had his nap schedule interrupted by the sound check. "And she may be on vocal rest, but that didn't stop her drinking and partying until 3 a.m. on Friday night." Note: The previously posted rehearsal pictures clearly contradict the New York Daily News report that Mariah was not there. Other artists like The Killers and Rihanna also performed outside the American Airlines Arena. ______________________________________________________________

The private event (read: no red carpet) was first scheduled to be sheltered at the Setai, and then finally found a home at the Raleigh Hotel, where revelers could enjoy the view from the penthouse balcony. It was so windy, however, that most chose to stay inside, nibbling on sashimi from Nobu and dancing to the DJ's retro playlist, which included a strange juxtaposition of New Edition's sweet "Candy Girl" with Prince's adults-only "Erotic City." Dressed in a coral Cleopatra-inspired gown, Mariah was instantly swarmed upon arriving, so she went behind the veil — a curtained-off corridor that secluded her from invited guests. Even if they didn't get to party with her, attendees got a parting gift: a bag stuffed to the brim with girlie goodies from Christian Dior, Urban Decay, and Levi's. Related NewsFrom New York Daily News: A party for Mariah Carey (who chatted at the event with Eddie Murphy), which had to be hastily relocated from a vulnerable yacht to the Raleigh Hotel. "Mariah was wearing an orange one-piece, which was basically a skirt and a bra top," laughed one guest. "She's clearly not using [Vogue editor-at-large] Andre Leon Talley as her stylist anymore."
From New York Post: The elaborate Mariah Carey/In Touch bash will benefit Operation Smile, the international organization that provides children with free life-altering facial surgery. ______________________________________________________________

--Check out Mariah on the cover and read the feature article in the Sunday, August 28 edition of the TV Guide insert in major newspapers across the U.S. --Last night on Extra, Joe Zee, editor of Vitals magazine, promised that this year's fashions are sure to sizzle. "I think the VMAs are the most unpredictable red carpet," Zee insisted. "The VMAs will definitely be the year of the young, sexy blonde." And when it comes to sexy elegance, Zee said all eyes are on Mariah Carey. "I would really like to see her clean and simple," he said. "I think she is best that way." --If you want to see Mariah perform live at the World Music Awards 2005 on August 31st at the Kodak Theater, Hollywood, California, free tickets are available at Iota.com. -- MTV.com gives us a look at some of this year's Video Music Award nominees and their first times on MTV. Here's what it says about Mariah: "It's hard to imagine Mariah Carey covering up most of her voluptuous bod, but that's exactly what she did for her first appearance on MTV, in the 1990 video for "Vision of Love." Dressed in a leathery leotard, Carey wore her hair in curls and looked more like a young Christina Aguilera than the Mariah we know today." --"We Belong Together" and "Shake It Off" are #6 and #10, respectively on this week's VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown. --From New York Daily News: The rain may be coming down in Florida, but the party is going ahead tonight for Quincy Jones, who is dining with his fanciest friends (think Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, LA Reid, Lil Jon, Snoop Dogg, Paris Hilton, Ciara, Luke Wilson) to celebrate the W South Beach Hotel & Residences. --In his interview with HipHop RNB Soul, Charlie Wilson, founding member/lead singer of the iconic group The Gap Band mentions Mariah. He says, "I love Mariah Carey, I would love to do a duet with her. The first time I met her was at the studio and she was doing the Emancipation... record. She was playing some things for me like "Ain't this a great song?" and I was like "Wow, maybe we should do something together" and she was like "Yeah, I would love that." --From USA Today: On Sunday night, MTV will bestow its prized metallic moon-man statue for Video of the Year to Coldplay, Green Day, Gwen Stefani, Kanye West or Snoop Dogg. Chances are, viewers who tune in to the Video Music Awards (8 p.m. ET/PT) may be more intrigued by Puffy-cum-Diddy's moniker makeover or Mariah Carey's overt exposure than any specific music video, the once-mighty art form that dominated the channel in the '80s and slipped to the fringes when reality dawned with Real World. --From The Transcript MA: You can bet James and Dianna Amos will be watching MTV's Video Music Awards on Sunday. That's because their son, Charles Amos, will be the man behind Mariah Carey's hair. It won't be the first time he has done Carey's hair. In fact, his résumé reads like a who's who of the music industry. Amos also has styled the hair of Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Jewel, Brandy, Ashanti, Lil Kim and Diana Ross to name a few. ______________________________________________________________

New Voice Message From Mariah!
//
4:10 PM EST Updated by Liron
Head over to Mariah's Official Site to hear a brand new voice message from her! Transcript:Hello Lambs! Yeah! Hi Lambs! Yeah, I haven't called with a festive crowd in awhile. I feel like I've been being very bleak, very boring and I just wanted to call and ... [laughs]. I have Rachel and Tots here and also Tiffany which is Tots's dog. Can she say hi? ... She's not being very verbal today, but downstairs we have the ever popular Jack. He's in his own room, relaxing. He's recently been nominated for that Relly award, we all need to vote for him to win this. Do you know what this means to my dog? No, but aside from all this silliness, I'm just... I haven't called on my own in a minute, just to thank you all so much for every thing and just be like.. have a celebratory moment with you guys, and really, we haven't had a "WOOOOOOOOO" [screams]. No, we really haven't even had a celebratory moment because everytime I call, it's been like in a middle of a vocal rest or whatever, quiet time, and now - not that I'm not supposed to be doing it, but I finally have these guys here with me. Only one that's not here right now is Trey and I'm gonna try to call back with him so we can get some 'Big Nasty' festivities. But anyhoo, I just wanted to say - I love you, appreciate you and always always always enjoy you and never ever ever forget that you guys are out there making it happen and just sending you my love. Alright? And, you know, we're the cheerleaders, we are the cheerleaders, but before this message cuts off again, like it did for the last three times I tried to leave a message, I'm gonna say bye and again thank you and for real, I am so grateful to you always. Thank you everybody for all the fanbooks, all the things you have been doing. I'm going to call you back when I can leave a calm message, without these guys here, and just let you know that I love you, love you, love you, love you, love you! Talk to you later... bye! ______________________________________________________________
