Mariah Carey Aims To Please On Summer Tour // 11:28 PM EST Updated by Casey

Mariah Carey's a little annoyed that she's going to travel by bus instead of plane on her upcoming tour — but not for the reasons you might expect.

The singer actually prefers ground transit: Air travel is too dehydrating, and sleep is easier on a bus than on a jet. So what's her problem? She's unhappy that she doesn't have time to decorate the vehicle "Chez Mimi."

"I wanted my bus to be pink, yet lavender," Carey said. "The rolling crib. But I'm going to design a bus eventually. I think all the girls are going to want it because it'll be like a girl's dream bus — the beauty area will be amazing. I can do one for the guys, too. I'm just good with the designing thing."

For now, Carey is happy just to design the content of the tour itself — titled The Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, the Hits, the Tour — since she and the musical director, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson, are currently planning precisely how the show will go on. While Jackson said on Friday's "Larry King Live" that Madonna's show had inspired him, Carey insists the pair are batting around ideas that aren't as focused on making her stage show "over-the-top theatrical" as they are about "the music, the songs and connecting with the fans."

"Here's the thing," Carey explained. "A lot of people just do their new stuff, and I can do that, but I'm the kind of person who hates to disappoint people, and there are just some people who won't be happy unless they hear a specific song: 'If I don't hear "Fantasy," I'm going to be mad.' So I'm trying to take certain songs that are, dare I say, classics, to new places."

That means Carey's hits, such as "Dreamlover," for instance, will be given a sort of remix treatment, "with me singing on top of any beat the DJ wants," she said. Carey noted that the mixes will vary regionally, changing as the tour travels across the country (it begins on August 5 in Miami; see "Mariah Carey Plots Mimi's Touring Adventure"). It also means that a mixture of hits and deep album cuts could be featured in a "hot medley"; Mariah has mentioned "One Sweet Day," "My All," and "Close My Eyes" as possibilities.

"The concept is to make them newer," she said. "Some songs you don't need to touch, like 'Vision of Love,' we kind of keep that one basic. But we're going way back, and it's not necessarily all #1 hits."

Since Carey's focus is on giving the fans what they want, the singer went so far as to name her tour after a fan's suggestion, which was based on a diary-like book the fan had kept of Mimi's, well, adventures. "There was a letter I wrote to Oprah in it, thanking her for the Legends weekend, and there was a paper about me in it that this girl got an 'A' on," Carey recalled. "And all these little indicators said to me, 'This is the right name for the tour.' Things like that affect me.

"The title does kind of say it all," she continued. "It's like, OK, 'the Emancipation' meant one thing, that was kind of one experience, and now it's going to be a fun adventure for me — to go around the country on this tour bus, meet the fans, and kind of experience the world in a different way. I don't want to get too dramatic, [like] 'It's a journey through my life,' but it is. It's like a party-meets-a-journey-meets-a-show. And I'll probably get a lot of inspiration as a writer from that."

    Mariah: I'll never tell.

She didn't exactly deny it either.
    Tanika: Are there rules?
Mariah: Are there rules to what?
Tanika: To like what you can't do with these gorgeous legs now.

Access Express unveils this 16-foot replica of Mariah Carey's legs! Gillette presented Mariah with their "Celebrity Legs of a Goddess 2006" award as an homage to her famously long limbs which is rumored she insured for a billion dollars! When questioned, the coy Mariah denied nothing.

Mariah: If you did insure your legs, for whatever amount of money, especially a billion dollars? I don't think it's the wisest thing in the world to go and talk about it. Yeah, you'd be like in the house rubbing cream on your legs constantly, never leave it.

Gracious Mariah Gets Mobbed at Fund-Raiser // 4:04 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Mariah Carey did what she does best last week at the Boys & Girls Club of Newark's "Evening of the Stars" event. Queen Latifah and MTV's big honcho John Sykes were honored at the fund-raiser.

Miss Carey appeared unexpectedly to present Sykes with his award. He founded the VH-1 "Save the Music" program, which raises money for musically inclined city kids, to supplement government cutbacks. In typical Mariah style - pink satin mini, sky-high ankle-strap heels, a riot of diamonds sparkling against bared skin - she stayed the night, enjoying violinist Miri Ben-Ari.

Afterward, she allowed herself to be mobbed by young fans and posed and posed and signed and signed. More than anything else, Mariah Carey loves being loved by her adoring public.

    Local "Mimi" Tour News
--From MLive (Michigan): Singing Mimi: We all know Mariah Carey can sing (well, over-sing), but can she perform? We'll find out when she brings her late summer jaunt, dubbed "Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, the Hits, the Tour," to The Palace of Auburn Hills on Sept. 9. It's her first in more than three years. Named for her alter-ego and comeback album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," it will include the live debut of old and new songs. Tickets go on sale June 2.

--From Orlando Sentinel (Florida): Mimi does Tampa. The eyes and ears of New Tix tell us Mariah Carey's new tour will stop by the St. Pete Times Forum on Aug. 7. No word on when tickets go on sale, but signs (and her Web site) point to June.

--From Daily Record (New Jersey): Back then, there was no way pop megastars on the level of Mariah Carey, Paul Simon, Madonna, Hilary Duff and Shakira would have even acknowledged Atlantic City, much less play there under the aegis of gambling dens. But the town's head-spinning transformation from senior citizen haven to playground of the much-younger and more-affluent makes this summer's headliner schedule what those in the newspaper business used to call a "Dog Bites Man" story. At Trump Marina, Aug. 17: Mariah Carey/Sean Paul.

--From Star Tribune (Minnesota): Mariah Carey's 30-city concert tour will not come to the Twin Cities where she has never performed a full concert.

--From Seattle Times (Washington): Summer vacation, grown-up style, is just a concert ticket away. Among big names playing now through September are Pearl Jam; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers; the Dave Matthews Band; Elton John; and Mariah Carey.

Randy Jackson Talks About 'Adventures' Tour // 7:47 AM EST Updated by Lynn

Together for the first time since the star-studded finale, American Idol winner Taylor Hicks and runner-up Katharine McPhee; and judge Randy Jackson sat down for an interview with special guest host Ryan Seacrest on CNN's Larry King Live last night. During the chat, Randy Jackson talked about touring with Mariah Carey this summer.

[ Download video clip here ]

Ryan Seacrest: You've made it clear on the show that you worked with Mariah Carey for a long time now and I read this morning that you're embarking on a tour with her. First tour in the U.S. in three years. What will you be doing with Mariah this time around?
Randy Jackson: I'm actually her musical director, have been that for a long time, and we're putting the tour together.

RS: What does that mean in terms of the tour?
RJ: It means that arranging the songs, putting all the music together, rehearsing the band, putting the band together, the singers, the dancers, the whole kit and caboodle. In fact, I helped greatly with the first two or three Idol tours of the kids that they're going to go on this summer.

So, you know, it's kind of what I do. It's like second nature for me because I played with her for so long and produced and wrote songs with her, so we're like, you know, we're like best pals so it's like, you know, she thinks it and I'm going like "OK, I already got you."

You know we were on the phone yesterday on a conference call for like four hours talking about the show because I had just seen Madonna's show and I'm just, you know, got things rattling in my brain how we really want to make the show the hottest show on earth, you know.

RS: What was the key to her comeback?
RJ: I think, you know, she is probably for me in my estimation one of the greatest talents we've ever had because you have Celine, we're going to keep it real right here, I always keep it real. We have Celine, we have Whitney, great singers, sold 100 million albums, 120 million albums each.

Mariah has sold 165 million albums but most importantly she co-wrote every one of them, co-wrote 19 number one records, co-wrote, co-produced all of them. That's the difference. When you actually are in control of your own destiny, meaning that you can write and you're just not waiting for songwriters to bring you songs, dude that's bigger than anything because what it's basically saying it's you actually did it. You know you do it the other way too but you're more of an actor when you're singing other people's songs.

Carey Caps Off 'Emancipation' Run // 7:58 PM EST Updated by Lynn

It was starting to look grim for fans who were hoping Mariah Carey would tour to support "The Emancipation of Mimi."

She certainly didn't need to. Since its release last year, the album sold more than five million copies, spawned smash hits like "We Belong Together" and won three Grammys, all without her hitting the road.

Plus, Carey didn't even know if she wanted to tour. She dreaded staging a long jaunt, and was taking time to savor the sweet success of her comeback. But after some cajoling from fans, the multi-octave diva realized that she needed to be on stage — that she wanted to celebrate the album that marked one of the sweetest times in her long career.

AP: What took you so long to get on the road?
Carey: (Laughs.) Honestly, it was kind of like the album, it has its own life. And I wanted to allow myself to make videos, to really work the record more than I have ... allow people to experience the album, to live with the songs, to feel the videos and the energy and basically get where I was coming from with this project on that level first.

AP: What are the special things you're planning this time around?
Carey: It's going to be kind of off the cuff ... When I said there may be special guests, that's kind of the way the record was made. It's like, I'm in a studio, someone is in the next room, all of a sudden, me and Snoop made a record together. It wasn't planned. If I happen to be in a city where I know somebody who I collaborated with on the record, you never know, they might want to show up if we have that kind of relationship.

AP: How do you determine which songs you're going to play and which ones you're not going to sing without alienating your fans?
Carey: I feel like I'm a tough critic. When I go to other people's shows that I'm fans of, and if I don't hear my favorite song, I'm like, 'Man, why?' (laughs). I'm going to do my best to please the crowd, but I also want to be able to express myself creatively, and I think that there's a happy medium now. The set list that I'm working with now — I won't reveal it yet, darling (laughs) — but it's a work in progress, it is going to achieve that, because some of the fans really do want to hear an old album cut. And then it's like some of the fans have heard you do 'Hero' 9,000 times and are like whatever.

AP: How much stuff do you haul around on tour?
Carey: I'm in the process of trying to get my bus together because I'm going to go by bus for the first time, because I really do sleep well by driving — not at the wheel (laughs) but I've always been able to sleep in a car, and my main thing is I always need a lot of rest when I tour ... I think it's going to be pretty cool, especially in America, to see the surroundings and really feel where I'm at, as opposed to being whisked into a hotel room at whatever-o-clock in the morning.

AP: Is your dog, Jack, coming?
Carey: Oh yes, Jack has his own section. He's going to have his own little nook. It's already planned out. ... I may have to bring him out every now and then. It depends on the crowd.

AP: Besides Jack, what is a must-have on the bus?
Carey: Really just to make it as private as possible in my little living space where I'll be hanging out and sleeping. As long as I have a TV and a bed and some humidifiers, I'll be all right.

AP: What do you do during your down time?
Carey: I don't know if people realize that for me to tour, I actually have to have a full day and a half off in between shows, whereas most touring artists do every night, and I just can't do that, because I'm very strong, but I'm very delicate in many ways too. So in my down time, the thing that requires the most discipline is not talking. Like, I wouldn't be doing an interview. I wouldn't be talking to anyone, I'd be writing notes, and sitting in a humidified room, sleeping.

AP: Has your voice ever given out on you on tour?
Carey: No, it's never that, I just know my voice. And honestly, the late great, Luther Vandross — who I had the utmost respect for — taught me an invaluable lesson, which is about the humidification, because the tone of his voice, the airy quality, when he would sing in that breathy voice, there's a similarity that we have. He would say, 'The best place for us is a really warm climate, and you really need to make sure you have humidifiers around yourself all the time.'

AP: With all the success you've had with this album, has it become one of your most special?
Carey: This and 'Butterfly' are my two favorites because they mark two very special significant times in my life, so this will always be a favorite of mine. And I just love that songs like 'Shake It Off' were allowed to be singles. In the past, I would immediately get, 'It's too urban, you can't put it out.' The experience of this record has just been so much fun for me, and just the freedom, and the title was very apropos, because this has been a lot of freedom for me as an artist.

AP: So now that you're free and there's been an emancipation ...
Carey: Now we're having an adventure.

Mariah Asks 'Idol' Judge To Spice Up Tour // 3:57 PM EST Updated by Casey

Mariah Carey is tapping a longtime friend -- "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson -- to help her mix things up a bit on her "Adventures of Mimi" tour, which kicks off in August.

"With this tour, I'm going to be working on some different arrangements for some of the older songs, to kind of like, give it a little more life to them," Carey recently told The Associated Press. "That's not to say they're going to sound totally different and to freak anybody out ... (but) I love re-singing songs to different music."

Carey and Jackson have been meeting to discuss how she'll spice up some of her old hits, and Jackson might even join her on a few dates.

"Randy Jackson is my musical director, and he has been for many years, even before 'American Idol,"' she noted.

Carey, who hasn't toured since 2003, is still riding high off the success of last year's "The Emancipation of Mimi" album, which gave her a huge comeback, with hits like "We Belong Together" and three Grammy awards.

She said cajoling from fans helped convince her to get back on the road.

"I genuinely want to tour with these new songs, as well as older hits," she told The AP. "These new songs mean so much to me, this time of my life has been so wonderful for me, and I want to experience that with my fans."

"The Adventures of Mimi" tour, which begins Aug. 5 in Miami and ends Oct. 10 in Phoenix, will make stops in 30 cities across the U.S.

Mariah Carey coming to the Pepsi Arena // 9:03 AM EST Updated by Casey

She's won five Grammys and gone platinum several times over. But there's one thing Mariah Carey hasn't done -- played a concert in Albany.

That's going to change on Sept. 1 when Carey brings her "Adventures of Mimi" tour to the Pepsi Arena. She'll be joined by opening act Sean Paul. Arena officials made the announcement Tuesday morning.

Over the past year, Carey has staged an amazing comeback, selling more than six million copies of her latest album.

This won't be the first time Carey has been to the Capital Region. Proctor's Theatre in Schenectady was chosen as the site for her first concert special in 1993, and the theatre is featured in the video for her hit "Hero."

Concert Promoter Stu Green said, "She did promise that she would come back and play Albany because that really helped get her career really jump-started and move onto that direction."

Tickets for the Pepsi Arena concert go on sale June 2. Prices range from $20 to $155.

Note: A video clip of this announcement can be viewed on the Capital News 9 website.

Mariah Carey Plots Mimi Touring Adventure // 10:34 PM EST Updated by Maggie

Now that Mimi's been emancipated for a while, she's ready to have a little adventure — so Mariah Carey's taking her on one, launching her first full-scale North American arena tour, which she's calling The Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, the Hits, The Tour.

"My summer tour is what I'm gearing up for next," Carey said. "I'm really excited about it."

Carey has played U.S. arenas before, but she usually peppers her tours with smaller theater dates as well. Not this time. Carey has also allotted a break between each date to recover on her first tour since 2003. "As a singer, I need a certain amount of vocal rest, where I just don't talk before I do a show," Carey explained. "On tour it's like really hardcore singing moments and then resting."

Some of those hardcore singing moments on this tour will be within songs from her six-times-platinum The Emancipation of Mimi album, but Carey is also planning to revisit hits and deep album cuts from her 15-year catalog, including "Vision of Love," "My All" and "Close My Eyes." She's also considering including one of the 25 ring tones she recently wrote and produced for Pepsi, so that she can show off her "creative tangents."

"A friend of mine was over and we were going through different concepts for the tour, and he said, 'You should do one of the ring tones!' " she laughed. "So I'm actually thinking about doing the one we're doing the commercial for," called "Time of Your Life."

Opening the two-month trek for the first half will be Sean Paul, while other "surprise" guests remain to be announced. The tour launches August 5 in Miami and wraps October 10 in Phoenix. Tickets go on sale June 2, and despite Carey's reputation as a diva, the prices are comparatively affordable, in the $20-$155 range.

"People ask me, 'Why don't you just go on tour and charge huge amounts of money? Do these small venues, but charge thousands and thousands of dollars to go in,' " Carey previously explained. "Because I have fans of all different ages and different money ranges, and they can't afford to go out and spend that kind of money. Not everybody has a budget to go out and go really high-end" (see "Mariah Wants All Fans To See Her — And Even Smell Like Her").

Before Carey kicks off her tour, she will end her concert hiatus with a Pepsi Smash Concert featuring Chris Brown scheduled for July 29 at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.

Hot again, Carey launches a summer tour // 1:33 AM EST Updated by Casey

Now that Mimi has gotten her act together, she's taking it on the road. Having re-established herself at the top of the pop heap last year with her six-times-platinum The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey is launching her first U.S. tour since 2003.

Called The Adventures of Mimi, it will kick off Aug. 5 in Miami and take the star to more than 30 cities. (Sean Paul will open a number of shows.)

"I've always associated going to a show with summer, and the sense of freedom that evokes," Carey says. "Summertime is the best time for tours, I think. Not that I'm the queen of touring."

The singer has indeed hardly been a constant fixture on the concert circuit. She says, "I need a day and a half of complete vocal rest between shows," which makes tour logistics tricky.

Before recording Emancipation, Carey "was on tour for a while, taking two days off between shows, which left me in a great place vocally. And now, because I'm at a really good place in my life and career, I want to document it."

Carey will, in fact, be filming the journey, for which she'll even use a tour bus. "I had a small one in Europe, but I didn't sleep on it or anything. Someone, I won't say who, told me, 'The bathroom may be a little small for you.' "

Though she jokes about "my reputation as a diva," Carey is keen that her Adventures bring her closer to the audience.

"I know that my fans already understand who I am. Sometimes I think they get me more than I get myself. But I want everyone who sees these shows to get a better understanding of me, my personal side, by the time they leave."

To that end, the star will mix hits from Emancipation and previous albums with deeper cuts.

"There's a song Close My Eyes from Butterfly, and girls have told me that it helped save their lives after abusive childhoods and relationships. I want there to be intimate moments — not a woe-is-me thing, but a chance for people to recognize that we've all been through things, and we can connect through music."

She won't disappoint the faithful. "I know people want to hear certain songs, and would be disappointed if I sang, say, Vision of Love and didn't give it my all — no pun intended, because My All will also be on the set list."

And don't be surprised if some of Carey's hip-hop collaborators show up as special guests.

"It depends on who's in town and available, but there are artists I have enough of a relationship with — Jermaine Dupri, Busta Rhymes. When I'm in L.A., maybe Snoop will be around."

Note: According to USATODAY.com, Sean Paul is the opening act for several of the shows including Tampa, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Toronto, Montreal, Boston, New York, East Rutherford, Albany, Hershey, Washington, and Auburn Hills.
