--From Culpeper Star: When did Mariah Carey get so hot? It seems like she has been around forever and she just keeps getting hotter! The songbird, who burst onto the pop scene in the early ’90s, is back - but this time she is full of attitude and oozing with confidence. --From Baller Status: Speaking of "It's Like That," in a previous Fire, I got on Mariah Carey saying that I thought the single could have been better. Well, it looks like 400,000 plus people strongly disagree as the single helped MC knock 50 off his throne en route to capturing the number one spot. One thing about Mariah is she an outright true artist. Anyone that writes her own songs, and can maintain a voice like that will always be alright, even during hard times. Mariah is doing great. --From Trident Online: Mariah Carey, "We Belong Together"- After I was getting on Will for being soft, I will top him in the "lamest thing ever done category" by saying this, Mariah is on fire. This song is killing it. I'm fine with the criticism, say what you must, but I love the new Mariah. --From Rochester Democrat & Chronicle: Say what you will about her alleged emotional breakdown and box-office bomb (Glitter), Mariah Carey's pipes are still a powerful force. The themes running through this CD are common: Girl meets boy, girl wants to meet boy, boy couldn't care less about girl. But the beats are memorable. --From Laramie: Laramie High School’s prom will be “a black tie affair” this year. That’s the prom’s theme, and volunteers are converting the gymnasium into the big city, replete with bright lights and skyscrapers for the Saturday event...A DJ from Denver will provide music and play student requests. The night’s theme song will be Mariah Carey’s “When I Saw You.” --Below are scans of the Mariah pages in this week's issues (ending May 9, 2005) of InTouch Weekly, Us Weekly, Star and Life & Style Weekly magazines.

"We Belong Together" Shows No Signs of Slowing Down
//
6:04 PM EST Updated by Lynn
A week after debuting #1 with her new CD The Emancipation Of Mimi, Mariah Carey’s second single, "We Belong Together" lands in the top 10 at Rhythm and is showing no signs of slowing down with over 3,330 spins (+748). Another strong week at retail (over 200,000 scanned) combined with the fact that the record is performing well in research is an indication that MC could be headed to the top of the charts, but she still must pass by Ciara and The Game which both post spin increases. MC’s media blitz has paid off as the press has hailed this CD as one of MC’s best to date. There’s no doubt that MC and Island Def Jam head LA Reid are pleased with not only the sales, but the overwhelmingly positive response MC’s latest effort has received, and there’s more Mariah hits yet to come. Related News: FMQB CHR: The exclusive MSN online premiere of MC's "We Belong Together" video was the biggest video premiere MSN has had to date. Over 1.1 Million video streams in 10 days! Houston Press Reviews "Mimi"

Mariah Carey The Emancipation of Mimi By Dan Leroy
Full (and damning) disclosure: This correspondent and Mariah's publicist were the only two people to publicly claim the universally reviled Glitter soundtrack was the best thing Ms. Carey had ever done. I was the only one who meant it and still insist that collection of '80s-inspired froth and naked confessionals marked Mimi's real emancipation. But as a follow-up (discounting 2002's play-it-safe Charmbracelet, which tried to control Glitter's damage and only made things worse), her eighth release is fine indeed, offering the ideal balance of cutting-edge hip-pop and organic R&B that has so often eluded Carey.
Of course, part of Emancipation's appeal is contextual; true Mariah peers such as Whitney Houston have disappeared, replaced by a manufactured rivalry with J.Lo and lip-synching teens. Yet these songs seldom try too hard to make her case (the grating bling of "Get Your Number" is an exception) and are sometimes lovely, new Philly soul gems -- "I Wish You Knew" and "Stay the Night" being the best of a solid lot. Forget the alleged revelations: What will you learn about Mariah from brokenhearted tunes like "One and Only"? Less than what the music itself will tell you: Mimi is free of the unfortunate, partly unfair stigma of Glitter, at last.

Mimi Can't Hold Off Matchbox Man Rob Thomas
//
4:34 PM EST Updated by Lynn
According to the latest SoundScan figures, Something To Be, Thomas' first batch of fresh-baked tracks as a solo artist, netted opening-week sales of nearly 252,000, and will bring Mariah Carey's tenure as Billboard's pack leader to an early end. But Thomas' first-week conquest was not a blowout. Carey's new one, The Emancipation of Mimi, closed out its second week in the retail realm with sales of little more than 226,000, bringing the album's two-week total to 631,000 plus. So while Thomas manages to bump Mariah from the chart's top spot, it wasn't exactly an overwhelming defeat. A 44 percent slip in Mimi scans undoubtedly helped his cause. Mariah's Star Turn Bedevils Miss Jones
//
10:38 AM EST Updated by Lynn
Mariah Carey ignited a minidrama at hip-hop radio yesterday morning when she apparently stood up Hot-97 for a long chat with Star over at rival Power-105.
Miss Jones and the WQHT (97.1 FM) team, unsurprisingly, were furious, calling Carey and her people unprofessional along with a number of less complimentary names.
The drama started a little after 6 a.m., when Miss Jones and her team said Carey would be coming on the show live.
Over on WWPR (105.1 FM), meanwhile, Star was saying that he and his team don't need guests, that they have enough to say without them.
Around 8 a.m., though, Carey came on with Star, kicking off an extended, cordial chat during which Carey seemed to enjoy sparring as Star periodically tried to coax her into saying indiscreet things.
She declined, for instance, to flat-out say whether she would sing a duet with Jennifer Lopez.
She said she had been "counted out" enough times that she feels she needs to be "more generous" toward others.
There was no official explanation why Carey went to Power. The team at Hot first said she had been delayed, then finally acknowledged she wasn't showing.

--From New York Post: Next, it was over to Cipriani's 23rd Street for a party celebrating Mariah Carey and her new record. Mimi digs both Capri and Aspen. "I worked on my record [in Capri] last summer," she said. "It's festive, fabulous and the water is gorgeous." -- NBC 4 on "The Emancipation of Mimi": The Diva is back, and from the opening seconds, it's clear that Carey's been listening to the radio. But more important, what she's done is applied modern R&B touches to what she does best, rather than the other way around. The first song is killer and then the ballads begin. Fans will not be disappointed. --New British talent Lucie Silvas cites Mariah as an influence in an interview with Guardian Unlimited: "I was obsessed. I remember the moment I first heard Vision of Love," says Silvas. "Then I saw this white girl with a black voice on television, and everything about her bowled me over. You could relate to her and yet she was a magical icon, and throughout my school days all I dreamed of was being like Mariah Carey. She sang with a gospel choir around her, which was always my dream. I just wanted to be her." --Check out Robert's redesigned and improved website, Eternally Mariah. --Last Saturday April 23rd, Mimi On The Move, MariahCareyUK's first fan event of 2005, took place in central London. A group of 30 UK fans travelled outside record stores to distribute promotional postcards. Below are photos from the event. --The Banding Together Project 2005 is still offering bracelets for sale. This Week's Sales Chart Preview: "Mimi" at #2
//
6:16 PM EST Updated by Lynn
With the sales week tally in full swing, early indications for this week’s album chart are that Matchbox 20 leader-gone-solo Rob Thomas will come out on top with a first-week total of around 230k-240k for Something to Be (Atlantic).
At this point, that looks like it’ll be plenty to outpace Mariah Carey’s The Emancipation of Mimi (Island), which appears to be seeing the typical 50% second-week drop-off following her spectacular 400k-plus debut. Those doing the number crunching say Mimi should come in at around 205k or so this time around.
Following Mariah should be the second Warner Music Group act to debut in the Top Five this week: Houston rapper Mike Jones, whose Who Is Mike Jones is on track to come in at #3 on sales of around 180k or better. Along with Thomas, Jones will give WMG one of its best weeks in recent memory.

Mariah in MagazinesBelow are scans of Mariah gracing the pages of the April/May issue of the Latin magazine, Para Todos; and the May 2nd issues of Star and InTouch Weekly magazines. Mariah's Debt to SocietyMariah Carey totally hearts you - yes, you - for taking her back to No. 1. She told me so herself. "I'm just excited, and you know what? I owe it all to the fans," she said at a party for her blockbuster comeback, "The Emancipation of Mimi," on Thursday night. "Because they stuck with me and they are feeling this album, so it's an exciting thing. "I just want to say thank you and they always know how much I appreciate them, but it's so nice to have such incredible fans that never let me down, and they encourage me and inspire me." Awww. Mariah was accompanied on the beige rug (that was weird: the Tribeca Film Festival must have booked all the red carpet) by venti-sized Vogue editor at large, Andre Leon Talley. I asked him if they were dating, but his response was drowned out by the photographers. (God bless Andre. He's always head-to-toe in a designer suit, but you know in his heart he's wearing a pink Speedo and a tiara.) Trendslife & S.C.L.A.S.S hosted the Official Mariah Carey Album Release Party last Saturday, April 16th at The City, New York. Mariah Carey was in the place and was joined by Jay-Z & Jamal Crawford from the NY Knicks, among other guests. Below are photos from the party.

 Did #1 Take Mariah by Surprise? Head over to MTV to see a short clip of an interview with Mariah where she talks about her album sales.
Transcript "Even if this album, you know, were to have however many number one hits, right? It could never be as big as "Music Box" which is my biggest worldwide album ("Daydream" is my biggest album in America) because records don't sell like that anymore, you know what I mean? So I'm kind of lucky that I started so young and I did make all those records and I did get to have like those 30 million albums sold, but people just... you really can't do that anymore."

Mariah Carey - On Her Past, Present & Future In Music
Jet Magazine, April 25, 2005 By: Melody K. Hoffman
 Mariah Carey’s past has taught her how to live in the present and what to hope for in the future. With the release of her 10th studio album in her 15-year career, The Emancipation of Mimi, the R&B songstress now shares this liberation and her inner self with fans.
"Mimi is just one of those nicknames that I have that mainly my friends and family use for me, people really close to me," Carey explains to Jet. "When I was naming the album, I was going back and forth with concepts with (Island Def Jam chairman) L.A. Reid and he had heard somebody call me Mimi and he felt that was really a cute name and that kind of represented the spirit that he was hearing on this record. I felt ‘emancipation of Mimi’ was cool because it is like a free-spirit type thing."
The multimillion-selling, two-time Grammy winner is confident and upbeat about this latest project. Carey worked with superstar producer Jermaine Dupri for many of the album's tracks, including It's Like That and We belong Together. She also worked with the Neptunes, Kanye West and hip-hop stars Snoop, Nelly, and Twista. "There are a lot of ballads, but the main vibe is very up-tempo, fun songs."
It’s been 15 years since the start of Carey’s rise to the top-selling female artist of all time. Her debut album in 1990 tore up the charts with the string of hit singles Vision of Love, Love Takes Time, I Don’t Wanna Cry, and Someday. Her 15 no. 1 singles rank more than any female artist, a feat that has rendered a No.1 hit in every year for 11 consecutive years (1990-2000).
However, everything that glitters isn't gold. As her star was rising, Carey says she was struggling with issues in her life that caused her to make some self-destructive decisions, namely her 1993 marriage to then Sony Music president Tommy Mottola, who was 20 years her senior. The power couple divorced four years later. Carey says if it was not for her faith in God, there would not have been a present or future in music for her. "My faith has really carried me through the entirety of my career. God puts you through really intense struggles to test your faith, to make you a stronger person and bring you closer to God," the 35-year-old singer says. "From early childhood I have had to deal with the fact that my parents got divorced when I was 3 and that I grew up in a biracial household-the whole situation was just very difficult for me. I had an inside ear to two different worlds and now realize how much racism is still a big part of the world today.
"It’s a constant learning experience, and the more I grow the more I understand how it’s shaped me. It made me insecure in a lot of ways-which made me make certain decisions to get into certain relationships because they felt safe. It felt safe to be with an older man because I really didn’t have that type of situation when I was growing up. I made a lot of decisions to try to feel secure. I think that was part one of my lesson. Then I had the struggle of trying to get out of a really difficult relationship I got into when I was very, very young. That taught me a big lesson in control-when you’re in a relationship that’s not healthy, it’s difficult to maintain who you are."
Carey says, "Once I got out of that, I had a whole bunch of other struggles to go through, business-wise-pitfalls and things that I encountered-I feel like I encountered them because I lost touch with those private moments of prayer. I was dealing more with the issues of this world as opposed to really doing the best thing for me-just turn to God to say 'I need you to handle this for me.' That's the point I’m at now. There’s always drama-I’ve just learned to be centered enough to deal with it."
From pressure of filming her first movie, Glitter, and recording the soundtrack album by the same name, Carey checked herself into a treatment facility for exhaustion in 2001. Though the incident was chronicled as an emotional breakdown, Carey feels it was blown out of proportion and it was just a case of her needing some rest. She was known for working days at a time without taking a break. " I think I’ve learned how to treat myself with more respect as opposed to letting people run my life. I don’t think those people really understood I needed my space, my time, my rest, my moments of going to church and just having moment to have down time. Before I was treated like someone who isn’t human, who doesn’t require sleep. They forget those things because they see you smile for the camera and they think you’re OK."
Carey, a talented songwriter who has written or co-written virtually every one of her songs, takes pride in the control she has over her music and her career now. Her stardom began with a wholesome image and soaring ballads that highlighted her multioctave voice. Now she has a sexier image in her videos and concerts and switched musically by collaborating with more hip-hop artists.
Asked if she felt that she’s ever slipped away from the Black Community Carey says, "I feel like early on, the record company marketed me. I signed record deals at 18 years old; I didn’t know about marketing strategy," Carey explains. " I feel like they intentionally didn’t want people to understand the full picture of who I am. I didn’t even know the White side of my family. My mother’s side disowned her when she married my father because he was Black. They didn’t acknowledge the kids or the marriage."
The famed New Yorker is currently working on various projects, including a Broadway play. She says it’s still in the making, but producers are going to be writing around her Christmas album, Merry Christmas.
Deep down inside, Carey genuinely values her fans. A stronger person who feels she has come full circle, she says fans can look forward to a future filled with music from Mariah Carey. " I know I’ll always be an optimistic, eternal 12-year-old at heart, very much all about having fun. Nothing has ever broken that side of my spirit. Things may have gotten me down for a minute, but I’ve never really fully lost that side of myself. After everything I’ve been through, I’m in a really great place with my career right now, and really happy as a person."

Billboard's "Chart Beat" Facts For "Mimi"
//
1:34 PM EST Updated by Liron
Emancipated For the first time in seven-and-a-half years, Mariah Carey is sitting in pole position on The Billboard 200. "The Emancipation of Mimi" is her first album to reach No. 1 since "Butterfly" debuted at the summit the week of Oct. 4, 1997.
"Mimi" marks the first time a solo female has had a No. 1 album on the Island imprint. Actually, this is the first No. 1 album on Island for any solo act, or any woman. The only other act on the Island roster to top the Billboard album chart until now is U2. The Irish rockers had five consecutive No. 1 albums on Island, beginning with "The Joshua Tree," which went to the top eight years ago this week.
"Mimi" is Carey's fifth No. 1 album on The Billboard 200. Her self-titled debut spent 11 weeks on top in 1991. Two years later, her "Music Box" CD had an eight-week reign. In 1995, "Daydream" ruled for six weeks. Adding in the one week "Butterfly" spent at No. 1, and this is Carey's 27th week on top of the album chart.
"Mimi" also debuts at No. 1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, where it is Carey's first chart-topper in almost 10 years. "Daydream" spent one lone week on top in October 1995. Carey's only other No. 1 R&B album was "Music Box," with two weeks at the head of the list in 1993.
It's also a good chart week for Carey on the Billboard Hot 100, where the first hit from "Mimi," "It's Like That," rebounds 36-27 and the follow-up, "We Belong Together," rockets 61-30.
