Jennifer Lopez wants manager Benny Medina back, but does Mariah stand in her way? According to Roger Friedman of Fox News, she does. Read on.

"Jennifer Lopez sure likes the spotlight. She's busy making a few people in her world unhappy even as we speak.

Recent disappointments and missteps have caused her to once again re-evaluate her management situation.

Those setbacks include her disastrous duet with husband Marc Anthony on the Grammy Awards show, her failure to snatch a potential hit single away from an up-and-coming singer (more below) and the botching of a documentary that was supposed to accompany her new CD. (I told you that story in a recent column.)

Lopez apparently decided that that was it for manager Simon Fields, who produced her movie "Shall We Dance?"

According to the New York Post, Lopez approached former manager Benny Medina - whom she sued last year and eventually settled with - about taking her back.

Only one problem: Medina - who did not return my calls - now manages Lopez's mortal enemy, Mariah Carey.

Four years ago, Lopez and Tommy Mottola stole music from Carey and put it on Lopez's album before Carey could release it.

Carey - who does not consider Lopez a singer, and rightly so - has been furious with Lopez ever since.

Sources say she only signed with Medina after it was explicitly understood that he could not bring Lopez back as long as Carey was a client.

All of this is said to be proving a dilemma for Medina, who is about to launch Carey's comeback album, "The Emancipation of Mimi." All the early buzz is good, and signs point to a hit.

Not so for Lopez, whose "Rebirth" album - due around the same time - may reveal more of the actress/dance/singer's vocal deficiencies than anyone cares to learn about.

Who will now manage Lopez is up in the air, but one thing seems certain: It will not be Medina, at least not while he's working with Carey."

The remix version of "It's Like That" premiered on Chicago's B96.3 during Stylz & Roman's Top 9@9 countdown where it placed at #7 last night. We remember B96 as the very first radio station to have played "It's Like That" in early January. The remix is reportedly produced by Scott Storch, who is behind such hits like Terror Squad's "Lean Back", Mario's "Let Me Love You Remix", 50 Cent's "Candy Shop" and Mariah's very own "U Make Me Wanna". Reports also reveal that the remix features some new raps from Fat Joe but apparently offers no new vocals from Mariah. People who were tuned in to B96.3 last night claimed that Mariah called in to the studio to introduce the song.

Jam'n 94.5 (Boston, MA) and Hot 97 Funkmaster Flex's Show (New York City, NY) have reportedly played the remix as well. One listener described the sound to closely resemble the beat of "U Make Me Wanna".

On its sixth week on the Billboard Hot 100, "It's Like That" drops one place from No. 19 to No. 20.

The song stays at No. 17 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks for the second week in a row.

While the song's airplay rose to a new peak at 66.523 million audience impressions (#17 on the Mediabase airplay chart), the digital downloads have decreased by 2% from last week for a total of 7085 downloads.

As you know, a combination of the airplay and digital downloads forms the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Songs with less airplay than "It's Like That" are able to surpass it on the Hot 100 due to better digital downloads.

Prince can rest assured that the label that buys his next LP will market it like a summer blockbuster rather than a February turkey. Island/Def Jam seems to be taking that approach with Mariah Carey's upcoming The Emancipation Of Mimi, the second of a relatively conservative three-album deal for the singer. Encouraged by the early performance of its lead single, "It's Like That" (hey, remember when an artist could get a singles deal to test the waters first?), the label is billing Mariah's new album as "The Return of the Voice." While that bold proclamation remains to be seen (rather, heard), it's the kind of committed marketing campaign that, even if it doesn't have a windfall financial pay-off, could keep Mariah loyal to label head L.A. Reid.

On the other hand, why would a record label want to take a chance on spending the kind of money necessary to market and develop a risky new artist when that artist could simply jump ship once he or she finds success? Well, for starters, nobody wants to walk the plank into the shark-infested waters of the music biz, and it's simply more incentive for the label to do its job and keep the artist coming back. Contractual "options" should give both the artist and the label the choice to walk, regardless of whether it's a superstar artist like Prince or a newcomer like Jesse McCartney. As Mariah knows, a marriage should only last as long as both parties are being satisfied. And get this: Artists could come back to a label even after dalliances with competitors! What an idea! It's an open relationship even a Jehovah's Witness could endorse.

The seven-octave singer recruits Snoop Dogg, Kanye West and the Neptunes for a powerhouse party disc.

Enlisting a superstar roster of collaborators - including Snoop Dogg, Kanye West and Nelly - Mariah Carey makes a powerhouse return with the dance-heavy R&B album The Emancipation Of Mimi.

"This is the fun side, the real me," Carey says. "It's a reflection of this being a celebratory moment in my life." The first single, the Jermaine Dupri-produced It's Like That, is a percussion-driven club-banger, and the standout track, the Neptunes' Say Somethin', showcases Snoop. "It was a party atmosphere," Carey says. "Pharrell was working with Snoop on his record in one room and with Nelly in another, and then we all ended up collaborating."

Emancipation also brings the ballads Carey is known for, such as Fly Like A Bird, which includes a message from the pastor of her church. "It's a special song for me," she says, "the most powerful vocally and lyrically."

--Shiro Suzuki, one of the developers of Sony's ATRAC3plus has used Mariah as an example to describe how this cutting edge technology in music encoding/compressing works, "When tuning, we use a database of sound sources created especially for evaluation. For example, Mariah Carey is extremely tricky because the instruments and the vocals range over a very wide spectrum. And we can't make an encoder by just targeting a particular band. I've been listening to Mariah for 8 years – tens of thousands of times. Now I don't need to listen to the original sound source: just listening to the decoded sound I can tell whether it's good or not. I think her songs are indelibly impressed on my memory."

--"It's Like That" features a sample from the song "The Way of Rhyme" by Kriss Kross, a rapping duo in the early 1990s. The two were discovered at an Atlanta mall in 1991 by then-19-year-old producer Jermaine Dupri, who took them under his wing and came up with the gimmick of having the duo wear all of their clothing backwards, lending more significance to their name. Mariah, Da Brat, Sharon Osbourne, JD, and Pauly Shore commented throughout the entire episode of Mariah's "Crib". Previously unseen scenes were shown as well, including parts of Mariah's house that were still being built while the show taped including a private recording studio. Mariah confirmed her love for Hello Kitty and said she had a room full of hello kitty stuff that would be a 5 year old's fantasy world. They showed that Mariah really wasn't naked under her towel in the bathroom. She had a strapless bra and panties on.

American Idol top 24 contestants Anthony Federov and Melinda Lira both list Mariah as their favorite female pop artist.

Mariah called in to Weekend Top 30 and spoke with DJ Hollywood Hamilton early this morning. Here's the transcript of the interview.

Hollywood Hamilton: We have Mariah Carey on the phone.
Mariah Carey: Hey Hollywood!

HH: Now, how do I really know this is Mariah Carey on the phone.
MC: Oh, I don't know. What would convince you?

HH: Just sing me one of any bar, any bar...
MC: Oh my goodness! It's so early and I didn't get my sleep. (Sings) There's a hero... does that work?

HH: Yeah ok..(laughs and so does MC) How you doin' girl?
MC: I'm great, how are you?

HH: I'm just... ya know I gotta be honest with you. I'm lovin' the single.
MC: Thank you!

HH: Is this a whole new Mariah Carey here? Because this is something that i really haven't heard in the past.
MC: You know what I think it's kind of like... obviously there's the essence of who I am and there's an element of what I've done before. But I feel like this record is different in a lot of ways than a lot of the other club... umm... records that I've done before. And it's really like a feel good record. You listen to the lyrics it's like ya know it's like leavin' you stress behind and whatever else is goin' on. It's just about having fun, it's your night. And that's what we were feeling when we did the record. I did it with Jermaine Dupri.

HH: Yeah of course.
MC: Ummm..and we've been workin' together since "Always Be My Baby." That was the first song we wrote together. So I feel like, we did four songs on this new album.

HH: There's a definite magic between you and JD. You can definitely feel it up you can definitely feel it.
MC: Yeah... exactly and we're so happy for him and what he's doin' right now so it's great.

HH: Ya know Snoop was on the show with me from House of Blues about a week ago and he called you scrumptious (MC laughs), what the hell does that mean?
MC: We love Snoop!

HH: Is there something we should know. What does that mean scrumptious?
MC: He's just being polite, that's Snoop. (laughs)

HH: Oh man, alright real quickly before we get into the single. You came on, this is your second or third time on our show. You know how the show works, people call in all over the world and you don't get on the show unless people are actually really feelin' ya. We don't go to the magazine's R&R, Billboard, or anything like that. So you know you came in last week at 29, and you're already mid-charting on the way up to like top 10.
MC: Oh yeah, well everybody who called in I love ya! And I can' thank you enough.

HH: Before we get into the single Emancipation of Mimi. I mean I know it's the most asked question, you've been doin' a lot of radio calls the last few days. Walk that up for me, what does that mean?
MC: Alright, let me try and say it quickly. Mimi is basically just a nickname that people who are really close to me use and ya know when I was making this record, it was like kinda about the fun side of me and just like ya know even on the ballads just letting my vocals kind of shine thru and letting my spirit shine thru. And it was just like rather than all the baggage of the whole Mariah Carey the celebrity or whatever anybody's opinions were was like yeah, The Emancipation of Mimi. The real me, not Mimi m-e-m-e, but Mimi the nickname people have been using for me for years.
